Don Alvaro, father of Chiara and Serafina, was a bold sea captain who, during the Spanish-Algerian war, sailing from Cadiz to Majorca with his eldest daughter Chiara, was attacked by the Algerians and held prisoner for ten years His followers at court, instigated by Don Fernando, a powerful noble and secret enemy of Don Alvaro, made the latter’s disgrace appear a crime, so that Don Alvaro was condemned for treason, and Don Fernando himself was appointed guardian of little Serafina. She having grown in age and beauty, her guardian confined her to Majorca and plotted how to make her his, not only for love that she aroused in him but for the desire to possess her rich inheritance. Meanwhile, Serafina fell in love with Don Ramiro, a young knight of the island, who asked Don Fernando for her hand, who not knowing how to oppose the marriage openly, had recourse to deception. He claimed falsely that Don Alvaro had returned secretly from Algeria, had presented himself at his castle to see Serafina, and had taken her with him to Madrid to plead for pardon at the feet of the king. Picaro, his former servant, a resourceful and roguish man who chanced to be in Majorca with his sailors, with whom he had long consorted, abetted the subterfuge, pretending to be the father, and delivered Serafina into the power of Don Fernando. But Don Alvaro, who had been freed from servitude through the offices of the Spanish consul, who was convinced of his innocence, was in fact returning from Algeria; and driven by a storm, arrived at the island on the same day that Serafina was the prey of the two villains. How the deception proceeded and who it ended form the plot and the denouement of a French production entitled The Cistern. The poet to whom this subject was proposed agreed to fashion it for music, seeing that it appeared to contain some scenes by no means ordinary. The difficulty consisted in preserving them, which he has tried to do insofar as the nature of the composition and the observance of some indispensible conventions would permit..

ATTO PRIMO

SCENA PRIMA
La riva è coperta di pescatori. Chi reca nasse, chi reti, chi è intento a varare barchette. Tutto è movimento. Pescatori, pescatrici, indi Agnese.

Donne
L’alba in cielo appar già chiara,
Flutti e venti in mar son cheti;
Preparate son le reti,
E le nasse da gettar.

Uomini
Salpa, salpa, vara, vara…
Che gran pesca abbiam da far!

Donne
Per le nozze della cara,
Dell’amabil Serafina,
Questa placida marina
D’ogni pesce abbonderà.

Uomini
Salpa, salpa, vara, vara…
La gran pesca che sarà!

Agnese
Ah! se fosse nel paese
Quel buon uom di mio marito,
Resterebbe sbalordito
A sì gran solennità.

Coro
Perché mai, comare Agnese?

Agnese
Vel dirò, ma…
(facendo segno di non parlare)

Coro
Già si sa.

Agnese
Il mio Sancio mi dicea,
Che il tutor di Serafina
Cagionato ei solo avea
Di suo padre la rovina,
E volea sposar lei stessa
Per mangiar l’eredità…

Coro
Ciarle, ciarle: ei l’ha promessa
Al figliuol del podestà.

Mentre Agnese vuol continuare, gridano di dentro Lisetta e don Meschino.

Meschino
Crudelaccia! Cor di rocca!

Lisetta
Asinaccio! Babbuino!

Agnese
È Lisetta che tarocca…

Coro
Con quel bue di don Meschino:

Tutti
Aspettiamo un momentino
Che da ridere sarà.

Scena Seconda

Meschino
Con la nassa e col cestello
Per lei cambio, e penna e spada;
E l’ingrata non mi bada!
E dell’asino mi dà!
Mamma Agnese, a voi m’appello
Di cotanta indegnità.

Lisetta
Oh! guardate il bel gioiello
Da seguirmi ovunque io vada?
Ride tutta la contrada,
E la baia ognun mi dà.
Cara mamma, a te mi appello
Se dell’asino non ha.

Agnese
Via, Lisetta; più riguardi…

Meschino
(interrompendo)
Al tuo coniuge futuro.

Lisetta
Oh! ci è tempo.

Meschino
O tosto o tardi.

Lisetta
Tardi molto; io ve lo giuro.

Meschino
Deh! fa’ presto, o mia Lisetta.

Lisetta
Non ho fretta, non ho fretta.

Meschino
Su bel fior di mia vecchiezza
Non lasciarmi consumar.

Lisetta
No, non vi voglio,
Vel dico schietto:
Un vecchio tanghero
Mi fa dispetto:
Tornate giovane,
E allor… vedrò.

Meschino
Ah! no, mia Venere,
Osserva un poco;
Son fresco e vegeto
Son tutto foco…
In tutta l’isola
Egual non ho.

Coro
Ah! ah! che ridere!

Agnese
Ma via, prudenza…

Meschino
Silenzio, o pecore;
Ve’! che insolenza!
Lisetta, sposami,

ecc.

Tutti insieme
A riva compagni, a terra vogate,
Le reti cogliete, le barche legate;
Tremendo uragano comincia a scoppiar.
(Gran burrasca. )
Sentite che tuoni! Sentite che venti!
Già piomba la grandine, già piove a torrenti;
Corriamo al coperto, scappiamo dal mar.
(partono)

SCENA TERZA

Chiara
Grazie pietoso ciel! Salvi siam noi,
Salvi per tua mercé.
(Sorgono)

Alvaro
Reggimi, o figlia…
Traggo a fatica il fianco,
E assiderato a poco a poco io manco.
Scendono lentamente.

Chiara
Soffri per poco ancor. Se spenta in terra
Non è pieta, due naufraghi infelici
Troveranno soccorso.

Giungono in iscena. Don Alvaro siede sostenuto da Chiara.

Alvaro
Oh! Dio! Perdute
Dell’innocenza mia tutte le prove,
Non mi resta che morte.

Chiara
Non disperar; si cambierà la sorte.
(Sorgono di nuovo)
Queste romite sponde
(con somma tenerezza)
Stanza ti fian secura,
Dove a miglior ventura,
Ti serberai per me.
Della sorella intanto
Che rio destin ne invola
Andrò cercando io sola,
Saprò guidarla a te.

Alvaro
Chiara! è ben difficile.

Chiara
Difficile! perché?
Periglio non curo,
Non temo fatica;
Ignota, mendica,
Illesa ne andrò.
Riposa sicuro;
In Chiara ti affida.
Se il cielo mi guida
Ritorno farò.

Alvaro
Dove siam noi? Deserto lido è questo.
Un sol tetto non v’ha.

Escono dall’alto alcuni pescatori.

Chiara
Coraggio, o padre…
Veggio alcuno appressar: prender potremo
Contezza del paese.

SCENA QUARTA
Don Meschino, indi Agnese, Lisetta e pescatori da varie parti e detti.

Meschino
(di dentro)
Spicciatevi buffoni… Ehi, mamma Agnese!
(entra in scena: Chiara e don Alvaro li vanno incontro: egli grida spaventato)
Misericordia! Aiuto!

Agnese
Che avvenne?
(correndo)

Lisetta
Cosa è stato?

Meschino
Indietro, indietro:
Noi siam fra gli assassini.

Chiara
Ah, non temete:
Due miseri siam noi dal mar gittati
Naufraghi a queste arene.

Meschino
(Ahi!… son pirati.)

Lisetta
Meschini! fan pietà.

Chiara
Noi vi chiediamo
Ricovero un sol giorno.

Lisetta
Volentieri…
Non è ver, mamma mia?

Meschino

Lisetta
Che importa a voi?

Chiara
Di Cadice noi siamo:
Marinai di mestier; padre e figliuolo…

Alvaro
Tutto ci tolse il mar.

Meschino
Me ne consolo.

Lisetta
Buffone!

Meschino
Sta a vedere
Che del bel marinaio è innamorata.

Lisetta
Qui non si è mai negata
Ai viandanti l’ospitalità.

Agnese
E concessa vi sia.

Meschino
Ma…

Agnese
Zitto là.
A Belmonte venite.

Alvaro
(A Belmonte!)

Chiara
(Prudenza!)

Lisetta
In lieto giorno

Alvaro
(Che ascolto?)

Chiara
(Non scoprirti.)

Alvaro
(Io fremo, o figlia.)

Chiara
Io, se lo permettete,
Vi terrò compagnia. Tu, padre, intanto
Riposarti potrai.

Agnese
Meco a Belmonte,
O buon vecchio, verrete.

Lisetta
Andiamo, andiamo.

Meschino
(Il bel compagno che quest’oggi abbiamo!)
(Partono)

SCENA QUINTA

Viva! viva… È tale e quale
Lo lasciammo un anno fa;
Nemmeno il diavolo sognar potea
Che un sotterraneo qui nascondea
Sì venerabile antichità…
Allegri, andiamo, lieti scendiamo…
Nemmeno il diavolo ci troverà.
(entrano tutti nel sotterraneo recando i bagagli)

Picaro
Il mestier del corseggiare,
Per mia fé, mi piace poco:
Esser sempre in mezzo al mare,
Esser sempre esposti al foco:
Or burrasche, or fucilate,
E alla fine… già si sa…
Miei pensieri, immaginate
Un mestier… d’impunità.
Per esempio l’usuraio:
Uno impresta, e prende cento,
Cangia l’oncia con lo staio,
Muta il rame con l’argento…
Verbi grazia i giocatori
Con due dita fan tesori;
Lo spezial nell’acqua fresca
Trova doppie e perle pesca…
I sartori, i calzolari
Van del paro coi corsari.
E nessuno di costoro
Mai si vede… Già si sa.
Ammucchiar vo’ anch’io dell’oro
Con mestier… d’impunità.
(allegro)
Sì, per Bacco, in questo mondo,
Quanto è largo, quanto è tondo,
La grand’arte dei più dotti
È il saper pelar merlotti,
Scorticare le persone
Senza farle schiamazzar.
Galantuomo in conclusione…
Galantuomo… è chi lo par.
Da parte la morale,
Ed in salvo mettiam questa cassetta
Che sul lido trovai.
Che diamin fia? Parmi leggera assai.
Povero me! Vien gente…
Entrar più non poss’io.
(si ritira in disparte)

SCENA SESTA
Don Fernando e Picaro.

Fernando
(Chi è costui?
All’abito è stranier.)

Picaro
(Ahi!… Ahi… S’accosta.)

Fernando
(Altrove io l’ho veduto…)
Non m’inganno: è il briccon…

Picaro
(Son conosciuto.)

Fernando
Picaro!

Picaro
Ah! chi mai vedo?
Don Fernando!

Fernando
Tu qua!

Picaro
Spinto dal mare,
Naufrago, disperato, ai patri lidi
Dopo tre lustri di perigli e affanni
Torno, qual ne partii, senza danaro.

Fernando
Che facesti finor?

Picaro
Il marinaro.
Ah! non mi fossi mai, mio buon padrone,
Mai partito da voi!

Fernando
(Costui potrebbe
Servire al mio disegno.) Ove tu il voglia
Farti ricco potresti un’altra volta.

Picaro
Ricco! piacesse al ciel!

Fernando
Taci ed ascolta.
Sai che da Barbareschi
Don Alvaro sorpreso insiem con Chiara
Primogenita sua, dal re sdegnato
Fu a morir condannato ed in esiglio
I suoi giorni finì.

Picaro
So pur, che voi,
Col suscitarli mille cani addosso,
Foste cagione della sua rovina.

Fernando
Io rimasi tutor di Serafina.

Picaro
Della figlia minor!

Fernando
Sì, costei crebbe
Bella, gentile…

Picaro
E ricca.
Buon boccone per voi!

Fernando
Né oppormi a queste nozze è in poter mio.

Picaro
Il caso è serio assai… Che far poss’io?

Fernando
Voce fra noi si sparse
Che don Alvaro è in vita…

Picaro
Intendo: il padre
Risuscitar vorreste.

Fernando
E tu sei quello.

Picaro
Bravo! il ripiego è bello.
Ma io…

Fernando
Tu mille piastre in dono avrai.

Picaro
Mille piastre!… Oh, scongiuro!

Fernando
Risolvi…

Picaro
Pronto io son.

Fernando
Giuralo.

Picaro
Il giuro.

Fernando
Seguimi. Appieno istrutto
Sarai da me di quanto oprar conviene.

Picaro
Mille piastre! L’affar comincia bene.
(partono)

SCENA SETTIMA
Don Ramiro e Serafina.

Serafina
Come più dolce il zeffiro
Spira tra fiore e fior!
Cara! d’amor
Sembra un sospiro.

Ramiro
Come sereno, e limpido
Del cielo è lo splendor!
Cara! d’amor,
Sembra un sorriso.

Ramiro e Serafina
Così, mia dolce speme,
Presago è amor così
De’ lieti dì,
Che noi vivremo insieme.

Serafina
Sempre teco!… Oh, bel pensiero!

Ramiro
Sempre meco!… Oh, sommo bene!

Serafina e Ramiro
Idol mio, tormenti e pene
L’avvenir per noi non ha.
Come un sogno lusinghiero
La mia vita passerà.

SCENA OTTAVA
Don Fernando entra agitato.

Fernando
Oh, evento inaspettato!…

Serafina
Che vi avvenne, signor?

Fernando
Ah, Serafina!
La sorpresa… il piacere… appien felice
Oggi vi vuole il ciel.

Serafina
Che fia? Parlate.

Fernando
Orfana più non siete.

Ramiro
Che dite?

Serafina
Il padre mio!…

Fernando
Voi lo vedrete.

Serafina
Oh, gioia! e fia pur vero?

Fernando
Dai barbari d’Algeri alfine ottenne
La libertà.

Serafina
Cielo ti ringrazio.

Fernando
È giunto
In Majorca stamane.

Serafina
A lui corriamo.

Ramiro
Voliamo. D’abbracciarlo io pur desio.

Fernando
Esci, amico.
(correndo a Picaro che sopraggiunge)

Picaro
(colle braccia aperte)
O mia figlia!

Serafina
O padre mio!

Picaro
O indicibil contento!

Serafina
O ineffabil piacer!

Fernando
(Bravo il briccone!)

Picaro
(Che pezzo di ragazza!)

Ramiro
Concedete,
Ch’io pur al sen vi stringa.

Fernando
È questi, o amico,
Il giovane signor ch’io destinava
Per marito a tua figlia.

Picaro
Mio genero, mi abbraccia.

Fernando
(A maraviglia.)

SCENA NONA

Picaro
Brava figliuola!
Ammiro il tuo buon cor.

Chiara
(Chi è costui
Che suo padre si dice?)

Serafina
(a Chiara)
Piangi? Partir ti duole?
Non hai tu asilo alcuno?
(Chiara accenna di no)
Ah! Padre mio!
S’ei restasse con noi…

Fernando
(È muto, resti pur: ci può giovare.)
(piano a Picaro)

Picaro
Fa’ pure, o figlia mia, quel che ti pare.

Chiara
(esprime con cenni il suo piacere)
(Seconda, o ciel, l’intento.)

Fernando
(a Chiara)
Meco al castel verrà.

Picaro
Genero mio,
Un po’ stanco son’io;
Ci rivedrem più tardi.

Ramiro
Addio, signore.

Picaro
(a Serafina)
Favellarti vogl’io da solo a sola.

Chiara

SCENA DECIMA
Picaro e Serafina.

Picaro
Siam soli.

Serafina
Che sarà?

Picaro
Mi abbraccia, o figlia,
E ricevi da me l’ultimo addio.

Serafina
Cielo! Che dite mai?

Picaro
Partir degg’io:
Per vederti, o mia figliuola,
Obbliai che io son proscritto:
Ma sussiste ancor l’editto
Che a morir mi condannò.
Se più resto un’ora sola,
Mia figliuola, io morirò.

Serafina
Calma, o padre, il tuo timore:
Il mio sposo almen ti giovi:
Il periglio in cui ti trovi
Si palesi al podestà…
Generoso e umano ha il core,
E i tuoi giorni salverà.

Picaro
Vana speme! Il suo dovere
Non potrà giammai tradire.

Serafina
Ah! qual dunque è il tuo pensiere!

Picaro
Di lasciarti… di fuggire…

Serafina
Di fuggire!…

Picaro
Ah! sì, conviene.

Serafina
Me meschina!

Picaro
(Al laccio viene.)

Serafina
Ch’io ti perda un’altra volta!

Picaro
Ah! pur troppo. (Allegri: è colta.)

Serafina
(abbracciandolo)
Nol pensar: dovunque andrai
(con trasporto)
L’amore mio ti seguirà.

Picaro
Benedetta!…
(sta per abbracciarla)
(Ah! mi scordai della mia paternità.)

Serafina
Deh! perdona, o caro amante,
Se per poco io ti abbandono…
Sento, oh Dio! che figlia io sono,
E natura il vuol da me.
Ma fedele, ma costante
Io saprò serbarmi a te.

Picaro
Che un boccon sì stuzzicante
Lasci ad altri in abbandono!
Io corsaro! Ah! no, non sono
Così gonzo per mia fé.
Se dev’esser d’un furfante,
Don Fernando, tocca a me.
Abbracciami, stringimi
Mia bella… figliola…
Amore sì tenero
Appien mi consola…
Partiamo, gittiamoci
Ai piedi del re.

Serafina
Unir le mie lagrime
Io voglio a’ tuoi preghi:
S’è ver che dei miseri
Al pianto si pieghi,
Ti deve benefico
Assolvere il re.

Picaro e Serafina
Felici, contenti
Tornare potremo;
Più lieti e ridenti
Le nozze faremo…

Serafina
(O amore, che m’armi
Di tanto valore,
Seconda del core
La speme e la fé.)

Picaro
(Se posso beccarmi
Gioiello sì caro,
Più lieto corsaro,
Per Bacco, non c’è.)
(Partono)

SCENA UNDICESIMA
Chiara sola, indi don Fernando e Picaro da parti
opposte.

Chiara
Né sola un breve istante
Potrò vederla io mai?… Deh! tu, fortuna
Che a tempo mi guidasti in queste mura,
Deh! sul più bel dell’opra
Non mi lasciar… Fa’ che l’inganno io scopra.
Giunge alcuno. Osserviam…
(si ritira in disparte)

Fernando
(incontrando Picaro)
Ebben?…

Picaro
(ridendo)
Si arrese
Figliuola obbediente,
E a partir si dispone.

Fernando
Ottimamente.
Ivi potrai
Riposar questa notte, e al nuovo giorno
Attendere il naviglio
Che per te noleggiai…
A Cadice il mio arrivo attenderai.

Chiara
(Perfido!)

Fernando
In questa carta
Descritto troverai come adoprarti
In caso di periglio,
E dove procurarti un nascondiglio.

Picaro
Va ben… ma vi scordaste
La cosa più importante.

Fernando
Ecco la borsa.

Picaro
Benedetta! partiam senza indugiare,
Prima che don Ramiro ci sorprenda.
(Partono)

Chiara
A lui si voli… Oh! qual congiura orrenda!
(parte pel cancello)

SCENA DODICESIMA

Spalatro
Zitti, zitti… entriam bel bello…
(entra con precauzione)
Qua porgete la lanterna.
Ben sapea che nel castello
Si salìa per la cisterna…
Se il castello è abbandonato,
Buon per noi; ci servirà.

Tutti
Visitiam per ogni lato,
Esploriam di qua e di là.
(vanno osservando d’intorno)

SCENA TREDICESIMA
Don Meschino e detti.

Meschino
(di dentro)
Ehi! Lisetta!

Spalatro
Vien gente.

Spalatro
(Maledetto!)

Meschino

Tutti
Cos’è stato?… Don Meschino!
Si soccorra il babbuino.

Meschino
Per pietà… signori turchi…

Tutti
Turchi! Noi!… Ah! ah! ah!
(gran risata)

Meschino
Sì signori, sì signori,
Gli ho veduti, gli ho toccati:
Eran venti, tutti mori,
Lunghi lunghi, sperticati…
Ma cospetto, ho fatto a pugni…
Mi han dovuto rispettar.
(Gran risata)
Voi ridete!… brutti grugni.
Non mi state ad annoiar.
Mia Lisetta, in questa sala
Da te sola non venire.
Sono turchi, son corsari
Che ti vogliono rapire,
E qui sempre in tua difesa,
Poverina, io non sarò.
Se ti portano in Turchia
Più sposarti non potrò.

Tutti
Sciocco! stolido! va’ via…
La paura ti accecò.
(Don Meschino parte)

SCENA QUINDICESIMA
Agnese, Lisetta, don Alvaro, paesani e paesane.

Agnese
Basta: più non si badi
Alle sue stramberie…

Lisetta
Turchi, pirati
Egli è avvezzo a sognar dacché l’istoria
Raccontar di don Alvaro ne intese.

Alvaro
Di don Alvaro!

Lisetta
Sì: nota è al paese.
Egli da’ Barbareschi
Belmonte liberò: quel simulacro
In onor suo si eresse.
(accennando la statua)

Alvaro
(Oh! rimembranza!
Oh! mia passata gloria!)

Lisetta
Se ne festeggia ogni anno la memoria.
Ma voi siete commosso… Avete forse
Quel bravo uom conosciuto?

Alvaro
Io vissi ognora
Al fianco suo.

Agnese
Dunque la storia udirne
Grato vi fia. La canterà Lisetta.

Lisetta
Volontier, se vi piace d’ascoltarmi.

Alvaro
O commosso cor mio! Non palesarmi.

Tutti si pongono a vari gruppi intorno a Lisetta.

Lisetta
Il castello di Belmonte
Da nessun venìa difeso.
De’ corsari esposto all’onte
Un bel giorno fu sorpreso…
Ma gran tempo il crudo oltraggio
Impunito non restò…
Di don Alvaro il coraggio
Gli abitanti liberò.

Coro
Di don Alvaro il coraggio
Gli abitanti liberò.

Lisetta
Al favor di notte oscura,
Con drappel di pochi amici
Del castel salì le mura,
E fe’ strage de’ nemici…
Tutta l’isola l’onora
Come prode difensor;
Ma Belmonte ancor l’adora
Come suo benefattor.

Coro

Tutti sorgono. Esce poi don Meschino.

Agnese
Han battuto.

Alvaro
È forse Carlo
Che da Palma alfin qui riede.

Lisetta
Sì: fia desso: io vo’ sgridarlo,
Da pensar assai ci diede.

Meschino
(ritornando)
Mamma Agnese… in questo punto
In calesse un foglio è giunto.

Agnese e Lisetta
Sciocco!

Meschino
Andatelo a vedere.

Coro
(ritornando)
(Scimunito!) È un forestiere
Che una lettera importante
Reca a voi dalla città.

SCENA SEDICESIMO

Picaro
(entrando)
(Quanta gente!)

Serafina
(Io son tremante.)

Coro
Avanzate: Agnese è qua.

Picaro
Don Fernando a voi m’invia.

Alvaro
(Don Fernando!)

Tutti
(Che sarà?)

Agnese prende la lettera. Don Meschino e Chiara la pongono in mezzo e leggono insieme, tratto tratto guardando Picaro e Serafina. Don Alvaro è in disparte osservando.

Picaro e Serafina
(Quale inciampo! È qui raccolto
Il villaggio tutto intero.)

Alvaro
(Perché mai coperto il volto
Tien colei con tal mistero?)

Meschino, Lisetta e Chiara
(leggendo e interrompendosi)
(Segretezza!… preme molto…
Bagatella… è un cavaliero…)

Picaro e Serafina
(Di timore, e di sospetto
Io comincio a palpitar.)

Alvaro
(Mille motti io sento in petto
Che non posso a me spiegar.)

Meschino, Agnese e Lisetta
(Uh! bisogna usar rispetto,
E badare a non parlar.)

Agnese si avanza inchinandosi.

Agnese
Don Fernando il mio padrone…

Meschino
Dirò io… che ho più di senno…
(ritirandola)
Questa lettera c’impone
Di star pronti… al vostro cenno…
Vale a dire di alloggiarvi…
Di servirvi… di aiutarvi…
Di sfamarvi a nostre spese
Senza averci a ringraziar.
Tosto andate, o mamma Agnese,
Cena e letti a preparar.

Coro
(ridendo)
Bravo! Bravo!

Meschino
(applaudendosi)
Ah! che ne dite?

Picaro
Grato io sono al vostro zelo.

Lisetta
Signorina, consentite
Che l’impiccio di quel velo…

Serafina
Non importa…

Meschino
(interrompendola)
(per levare il velo)
Eppur, signora…

Picaro
No… non serve. (Va’ in malora.)
(lo rispinge con indifferenza)

Meschino
(a Lisetta)
(Oh, dev’essere ben brutta
Se ha ribrezzo a comparir.)

Alvaro
(in disparte)
(Qual riguardo!)

Serafina
(piano a Picaro)
(Tremo tutta!)

Picaro
(idem)
(Per pietà non ti scoprir.)
Buona Agnese, la mia figlia
Stanca è assai.

Meschino
Si regge appena.

Picaro
Congedate la famiglia,
E apportateci da cena.

Meschino
Intendeste?

Coro
Inteso abbiamo.

Meschino
Salutiamoli e partiamo.

Tutti
Buona notte, buon riposo.

Meschino
Mamma Agnese stiamo all’erta.

Meschino, Alvaro, Lisetta e Agnese
Quel voler restar coperta
Mi dà molto da pensar.

Picaro
Lode al ciel non fu scoperta,
Incomincio a respirar.

Serafina
Lode al ciel non fui scoperta,
Incomincio a respirar.

Tutti
Domattina torneremo,
Vi verremo ad inchinar.

Picaro e Serafina
Grazie, grazie: ci vedremo.
(Né la voglion terminar!)

Tutti
Buona notte, buon riposo.

Chiara
Vieni: e vegliam sul perfido
Finché ne giunga aita.

Alvaro
Io tremo, o Chiara.

Chiara
Acquietati.
Nessun ti crede in vita.

Chiara e Alvaro
Ah!

Picaro
Tacete… Io tutto intesi.

Chiara
Scellerato!

Picaro
(con sommissione)
non temete…
Fui sedotto, è ver, vi offesi;
Ma pentito mi vedete.

Chiara
Tu pentito!

Alvaro
Tu, impostore!

Picaro
Ascoltatemi, signore;
Se accordate a me clemenza,
Grave arcano io svelerò.
Rivocata è la sentenza,
Che a morir vi condannò.

Chiara e Alvaro
Che mai dici? Come! quando?

Picaro
Io so ben dov’è il decreto.

Chiara
Chi lo tiene?

Picaro
Don Fernando…
Ma il briccon lo tien segreto.

Chiara e Alvaro
Per cavarglielo di mano
Quale mezzo adoperar?

Picaro
Minacciar, gridare è vano,
L’arte sola può giovar.
(con mistero)

Don Ramiro
(ad Alvaro)
Voi cercate,
Ma lui solo a me guidate…
Per riuscire nell’intento
Ci vuol molto accorgimento…
(a Chiara)
Voi, signora, a Serafina
In segreto io condurrò.

Chiara e Alvaro
Se ci manchi, se c’inganni,
Guai per te, tremar tu dêi:
Sei perduto, morto sei
Se infedel ti troverò.
(A fidarsi non ci è male:
Tanto fa: fuggir non può.)

Picaro
Non temete ch’io v’inganni:
Io detesto i falli miei:
Don Fernando ammazzerei
Che all’error mi strascinò…

Quest’uscio ancor chiudiamo.

Chiara
(di dentro)
Soccorso, aita! Oh! rabbia!

Picaro
Scoperto io son: fuggiamo.

Coro
(di dentro)
Don Alvaro.

Serafina
(in iscena)
Che sento?

Picaro
Mi cercano.
(in iscena)

Serafina
Oh, spavento!

Picaro
Coraggio: vieni meco.

Voci di dentro
Guardie… soccorso… olà.

Serafina
Il tuo crudel periglio
Raccapricciar mi fa.

Picaro
Segreto nascondiglio

A terra l’uscio, a terra…

Serafina
Il padre, o ciel difendi,
Salvalo per pietà.

Picaro
Vieni… fa’ cor… discendi…

Serafina!… Serafina!
Ah! perduta è la meschina.

Chiara
È fuggito… Ci ha traditi.

Alvaro
Oh! Sventura!

Ramiro
Oh! Avversità!

Meschino
Se per aria non è ito
Nel castel si troverà.

Chiara, Alvaro e Ramiro
Ah! si cerchi, si confonda,
Si punisca il malfattore…
Non fia luogo che lo asconda,
Che l’involi al mio furore.
Col suo sangue, con la vita
Tal perfidia pagherà.

Chiara
(Se la suora mi è rapita
Il dolor mi ucciderà.)

Alvaro
(Se la figlia mi è rapita
Il dolor mi ucciderà.)

Ramiro
(Se la sposa mi è rapita
Il dolor mi ucciderà.)

Meschino
Presto… un arme da far fuoco…
Precedetemi alla zuffa…
Il briccon vedrà bel giuoco,
Gli vogl’io cavar la muffa.
Per la strada più spedita
L’ira mia lo giungerà.
(Gamba mia mi porgi aita,
Procuriam di uscir di qua.)

Agnese, Lisetta e Coro
Sì: cerchiam per ogni loco,
D’alto in basso, sotto sopra;
Il castello vada a foco,
Ma il fellone si discopra,
Ogni strada ed ogni uscita
Impedita troverà.
Col suo sangue, con la vita
Tal perfidia pagherà.

ATTO SECONDO

SCENA PRIMA
I pirati sono distesi a vari gruppi qua e là dormendo. Esce Spalatro frettoloso dalle rovine.

Spalatro
(sommessamente)
Capitano!…

Tutti
(svegliandosi)
Che avvenne?

Spalatro
Ascoltate…
Siam vicini a vederci assaliti…
Le rovine son tutte occupate,
Chiusi i passi che guidano al mar.

Tutti
Ah!

Gennaro
Silenzio!… qualcun ci ha traditi…
Forse Picaro… è desso senz’altro…
Sì, stamane è sparito lo scaltro…
Quest’asilo fia corso a svelar.

Tutti
Si deluda quel vil traditore,
Al riparo conviene pensar.

Gennaro
Il riparo è nel nostro valore,
Ogni rischio bisogna sfidar.

Tutti
Sì, coraggio, corriamo all’ingresso,
Agli arcier s’impedisca l’accesso;
Se sforzato è l’angusto passaggio
Sul castello dobbiamo piombar.
Il riparo è nel nostro coraggio,
Ogni rischio dobbiamo sfidar.
(i pirati corrono a destra fra le rovine)

SCENA SECONDA
Spalatro, Gennaro, indi don Meschino fra i pirati, per ultimo Chiara.

Gennaro
Spalatro, dal mio fianco
Non ti partir: se mai soccomber dessi,
Noi fuggirem per le segrete scale
Onde al castel si sale. In quella parte
Non troverem nemici: essi fian tutti
Uniti e intenti a ricercarci abbasso.

Odesi di dentro un colpo di pistola.

Spalatro
Qual colpo!

Esce don Meschino.

Meschino
Aiuto!

Pirati
Arresta.

Meschino
Io son di sasso.

Gennaro
Chi sei? Chi ti condusse,
Temerario, qui dentro?

Meschino
Io son… Ma piano,
Voi mi strozzate in gola
La voce e la parola. Io son… signori…
Nipote di mio zio correggidore,
Per amore cangiato in pescatore.

Gennaro
Ah! ah! tu sei nipote
Del zio correggidor… Venivi dunque,
O briccon, a spiar i fatti nostri!

Spalatro
Tu sei degli Alguazili il condottiere.

Meschino

Amici andiamo.
(partono tutti i pirati)

SCENA TERZA
Don Meschino indi Chiara.

Meschino
Buona notte!… Son cotto,
Di qui non esco più.

Chiara
(dal fondo)
Sono partiti…
Qualche uscita cerchiam.

Meschino
L’avea pur detto
Che ci eran dei corsari.

Chiara
Alcun qui parla.

Meschino
Intesi un calpestio.

Chiara
Don Meschino!

Meschino
Che! Voi!

Chiara
Zitto: son io.

Meschino
Ah! signora, l’abbiam fatta!
Questa è tana di pirati:
Siam già belli e sotterrati
Anche prima di morir.

Chiara
Se Lisetta si è sottratta
Alla vista de’ corsari,
Noi possiam trovar del pari
Un ripiego per uscir.

Meschino
Così fosse! Ma i furfanti
Fan la ronda d’alto in basso.

Chiara
Non importa: andiamo avanti,
Ci apriremo a forza il passo.

Meschino
Noi!

Chiara
Sì, noi.

Meschino
Eh via, scherzate!
Ci saranno schioppettate.

Chiara
Se vacilli, se hai spavento,
Qui rimani: io sola andrò.

Meschino
Ah! fermatevi un momento.

Chiara
Vieni dunque.

Meschino
Adagio un po’.

Chiara

Meschino
Se qui resto, son servito…
S’esco fuori… oh il brutto gioco!
Là in padella… qua nel foco.
Non ne sorto con onor.

Chiara
Su, risolvi, all’abbandono.

Meschino
No, perbacco! Ho risoluto.

Chiara
Bada bene!

Meschino
Fermo io sono.

Chiara
Stammi al fianco.

Meschino
(Gamba aiuto.)

Chiara
Sorte amica all’ardimento
Il sentiero ne aprirà.

Meschino
Ah! se giungo a salvamento
Un miracolo sarà.
Tutti i giorni mei
S’internano nei sotterranei.

SCENA QUARTA
Picaro e Serafina. Scendono dalla scala in fondo alla cisterna. Dall’alto.

Serafina
Dove mai mi conduci? In mezzo a tanti
Di sotterranee vie ravvolgimenti
Non c’innoltriam di più.

Picaro
Scendi: siam giunti
In più capace loco.
Non paventar… (Parmi imbrogliato il gioco.)
Che vedo?…
(a basso)
Non m’inganno…

Serafina
Che fu? smarrito sei!…

Picaro
Nulla… Mi lascia
Riflettere… esplorar… (Ah! de’ compagni
È questo il nascondiglio…
Se partiti non sono, affé, sto fresco…
È un prodigio se n’esco…)

Serafina
Ebbene… o padre?

Picaro
Ebbene, o figlia mia…

Serafina
Miseri noi!…

Picaro
Quel lungo corridore
Mette forse all’aperto… esaminarlo
Prontamente conviene… in questo luogo
Aspettami tranquilla…

Serafina
Oh! cielo! E vuoi
Che qui sola io rimanga?

Picaro
(Fosser partiti!…) Non aver paura.
(si disperde a sinistra)

SCENA QUINTA
Serafina sola.

Serafina
Quale orrendo soggiorno!
Qual funesto destin!… Che mai sarebbe,
Sventurati, di noi, se via di scampo
Non ritrovasse il padre? O tu, che forse
Della mia fede dubitando vai…
O sposo mio!… Ti rivedrò giammai?
Fra quest’ombre, in questo orrore,
Io t’invoco, amato bene.
Ma, infelice! a te non viene
Il sospiro dell’amor…
Va smarrito non sentito
Fra quest’ombre, in questo orror.
Odesi strepito dai sotterranei.
Ciel!… qual fragore ascolto?

Voci di dentro
Avanti.

Serafina
Ahi! lassa!
Il padre fu scoperto.

SCENA SESTA

Gennaro
(afferrandola per un braccio)
Qua signorina.

Picaro
(Son dessi.)

Chiara
(riconoscendo Serafina)
Ah! Serafina!

Lisetta
In man degli empi anch’essa!

Meschino
Oh! questa è bella.

Chiara
Lasciatemi, crudeli… O mia sorella!

Serafina
Io… Tu!… Che dici?… Ahi, lassa!
Chi son costoro?

Chiara
De’ pirati in mano

Serafina
Oh! tradimento!

Chiara
Picaro è il nome suo.

Pirati
Picaro!

Picaro
(Ardire!
Facciam pria di morire
Qualche cosa di buono.)

Gennaro
(minaccioso)
Ov’è colui?

Picaro
(svelandosi)
Eccolo, e mille piastre ei reca a voi.

Gennaro
Mille piastre!

Picaro
Prendete, ed ammirate…
Ma costei rispettate… Un gran Signore
(con importanza)
L’ha confidata a me…
Vi dirò poi perché… saper vi basti,
Che una miniera d’oro abbiam trovato.

Pirati
Bravo! Picaro, bravo!

Serafina
Ah! scellerato!
Io tua preda!… Oh! mio dolore!
Io tua schiava! Oh! nera insidia!
La mercé di tua perfidia
La mia man ti toglierà.

Spalatro e Gennaro
Non si badi al suo furore.

Picaro e Pirati
Passerà…
Si adatterà.

Serafina, Chiara, Lisetta e Meschino
Ciel, se soffri il traditore
Il tuo fulmine che fa?

Gennaro
Ehi! Nel nostro magazzeno
La furente chiusa venga.

I pirati la separano da Chiara.

Serafina e Chiara
Ah! spietati… unite almeno…

Picaro
(accennando Lisetta)
Compagnia costei le tenga.

Meschino
Buona notte, o mia Lisetta.

Pirati
Siano divisi.

Serafina, Chiara, Meschino e Lisetta

Picaro
Taci… Fingi… e in pace aspetta…
Tutti avrete libertà.

Serafina gitta un grido di sorpresa. Picaro le accenna di tacere.

Serafina
(Sarìa possibile! O ciel pietoso!…
Non so che credere, parlar non oso…
Poss’io fidarmi del traditor!
Ah! che spezzarmi io sento il cor.)

Pirati
Presto, sbrighiamoci, vi dividete.

Serafina, Meschino, Lisetta e Chiara
Addio.

Picaro
(sottovoce a Serafina)
Consòlati, salvi sarete.

Serafina
(confortata)
Con alma forte, sfidiam la sorte;
Un dì saremo felici ancor.

Serafina, Meschino, Lisetta e Chiara

SCENA SETTIMA
Picaro,Gennaro, Spalatro e pirati. Chiara e don Meschino in disparte afflittissimi.

Gennaro
Picaro, allegramente!
Bella preda che hai fatta!

Spalatro
I più furfanti
Sono i più fortunati.

Picaro
Da banda i complimenti.

Chiara
(Oh! scellerati!)

Meschino
(Per carità, tacete,
Altrimenti siam iti.)

Gennaro
Or che ci desti

Spalatro
(ridendo)
Il bel presente,
Capitan, che gli fai!

Gennaro
Prendi, Picaro.

Picaro
Ah! ah! nulla mi dai.
Questa magra cassetta
Era già mia, che la trovai stamane
Sulla spiaggia del mar.

Chiara
(Cielo! son quelle
Di mio padre le carte.)

Picaro
(legge le carte della cassetta)
Algeri… Eccettera…
Che diavolo!… Una lettera…
Prove dell’innocenza…
(forte verso Chiara: ella si accosta)
Di don Alvaro… Oh! vedi il buffoncello
Come si va accostando
A questi scartafacci, e li contempla
Con desiderio e amore,
Che sembra figlio di un procuratore!
Anch’io mostrar mi voglio
(in aria di scherzo)
Generoso e gentil… prendi, ragazzo,
Te ne faccio un presente.

Chiara
Oh! gioia!

Gennaro
Egli è davver riconoscente.
Ma lasciamo gli scherzi,
E pensiamo a partir… tranquillo è il mare,
Alta è la notte: esaminiam se sgombra
È d’arcieri la via.

Meschino
Non dubitate…
Nessun sa che qui siate…
Cercan solo di lui…
(accennando Picaro)
Partite pure,
E lasciateci andar a casa nostra
In grazia dell’avviso salutare.

Gennaro
Ve’ il bravo consiglier! Non lo sperare.
Picaro, mentre andiamo a far la ronda,
Veglia sui prigionieri.

Picaro
Andate, andate.
Che sono in buone mani.
(piano a Chiara)
(Coraggio!)

Chiara
(Qual parlar!)

Meschino
(Barbari! cani!)

Gennaro, Spalatro e i pirati si allontanano.

SCENA OTTAVA
Picaro, Chiara e don Meschino.

Meschino
Chiara!… Ebbene? Questa volta
Siamo in trappola davvero.

Chiara
Ho la mente sì sconvolta
Che non so se temo o spero.

Picaro
(Niun mi vede, niun mi ascolta,
Si eseguisca il mio pensiero.)

Meschino
Se non moio di spavento
Mai più certo io non morrò.

Chiara
Ma son pronta ad ogni evento,
Né di cor mi perderò.

Picaro

Lisetta)

Meschino
Fa davvero.

Chiara
Oh, ciel! Che fia?

SCENA NONA
Picaro conduce fuori Serafina e Lisetta.

Chiara
Mia sorella!

Serafina
Chiara mia.

Chiara, Serafina, Lisetta e Meschino
Siamo liberi! Oh, contento!
Ti vegg’io!… Son fuor di me.

Picaro
Moderatevi un momento,
Pensar pria… studiar si de’.
(Tutti porgono orecchio)
Per sentier, ch’io sol conosco,
Serafina io qui guidai;
Ma confuso, all’aer fosco
Io la porta ne serrai:
Di sforzarla, di atterrarla
Ogni mezzo tenterò.
(a don Meschino)
Tu frattanto colà fuore
Veglia attento in sentinella:
Al più piccolo rumore
(a Chiara)
Voi chiudete questa e quella;
Me chiamate, e prontamente
Al riparo accorrerò.
Intendeste?

Chiara, Serafina e Lisetta
Ottimamente.

Meschino
Quatto, quatto io là starò.

Chiara, Serafina, Lisetta, Meschino e Picaro
Presto all’opra… non si tardi…
Occhio a tutto ed avvertenza…
Un indugio, un’imprudenza,
Palesar, tradir ci può.
(Meschino s’interna nei sotterranei. Picaro ascende la scala)

SCENA DECIMA
Serafina, Chiara e Lisetta.

Serafina, Chiara e Lisetta
Tremante, smarrito

Serafina
Ascolta…

Lisetta
È salito.

Chiara
La porta già fiede.

Serafina
Resiste…

Lisetta
Non cede…

Chiara
Oh, pena!

Lisetta
Oh, terror!
Tremante, smarrito
Fra speme e sospetto,
Mi balza nel petto,
Mi palpita il cor.

SCENA UNICESIMA
Picaro scende rapidamente, seguito da don Ramiro e dagli Alguazili ecc. Indi esce don Meschino dai sotterranei.

Chiara
Silenzio! Alfine ei scende.

Lisetta
Solo non è.

Serafina
Che miro?

Picaro e Ramiro
Coraggio.
(dalla scala)

Chiara, Lisetta e Serafina
Don Ramiro!

Meschino
(dai sotterranei)
Quai gridi!… Ebben, che ci è?

Lisetta
(additando Picaro e Ramiro che scendono)
Osserva.

Meschino
Evviva, evviva.

Serafina
Sposo!

Ramiro
Sposa!

Meschino
Siam salvi affé.

Ramiro
Ah! non credea, mia vita,
Più rivederti mai.
Quanto per te penai,
Gioisco alfin per te.
No, non sarai rapita
Un’altra volta a me.

Chiara, Lisetta e Serafina
Oh! gioia! Oh! bel momento!

Meschino
Bravo corsar davvero!
(abbraccia Picaro)

Chiara, Lisetta, Serafina e Ramiro
(a Picaro)
Ah! sì, del mio contento
Tu sei l’autor primiero…

Picaro
L’affanno ch’io vi costo
Come compenserò?

Tutti circondano Picaro e lo accarezzano.

Ramiro, Chiara, Serafina e Lisetta
Ah! ti renda il ciel clemente
La mercé del tuo favore.
Ogni offesa ed ogni errore
Sì bell’opra cancellò.

Picaro
Poiché il fato mi consente
Ch’io vi renda al genitore,
Non odiate un malfattore,
E premiato appien sarò.

Meschino
Oh! ci è pur la brava gente
Che non ha così buon core.
A mio zio correggidore

Rimangono Picaro e don Ramiro cogli Alguazili.

SCENA DODICESIMA
Picaro, don Ramiro e guardie.

Ramiro
Picaro, or noi corriamo
Dei pirati sull’orme.

Picaro
In questo loco
Ritorneran fra poco
A prendere il bottino, e ad imbarcarsi
Andranno adirittura
Ove la via del mar veggan sicura.
Aspettarli qui giova, ed assalirli
All’impensata.

Ramiro
Custodir l’ingresso
Pria di tutto conviene.

Picaro
Udir mi sembra
Lontano calpestio: fra le rovine
A celarci corriamo.

Ramiro
Non si faccia rumor. Coraggio.

Picaro
Andiamo.

Meschino
Don Ramiro… accorrete…
Ci son degli altri guai…
Chiara in fumo ne andò.

Ramiro
Che dici mai?
Quando incontro ai pirati
Io corsi alla marina
Al fianco la lasciai di Serafina…

Meschino
C’era… ma in quell’imbroglio, in quel trambusto
Chi sa dove sparì?… forse è rimasta
Estinta anch’essa nel combattimento,
O in man d’altri corsari.

Ramiro
O tristo evento!
E fia ver, Serafina?

Serafina
Ah! sì… fu vana
Ogni inchiesta, finor… Non si è scoperta
Orma de’ passi suoi.

Alvaro
O Chiara, ove sei tu?

SCENA QUINDICESIMA E ULTIMA
Chiara e Picaro compariscono dalle rovine dietro il sarcofago.

Chiara
Chiara è con voi.

Alvaro
Figlia!

Serafina
Sorella!

Ramiro
Oh! gioia!

Meschino
Di nuovo in quelle tane?

Chiara
Ivi io scordai
Le preziose prove
Dell’innocenza tua; per ricovrarle
Con Picaro discesi un’altra volta
In quell’orrido speco.
Mi secondò fortuna, e a te le reco.
Prendi, o padre; il tuo gran nome
Far palese alfin ti lice;
Onorato e appien felice
Te la patria ancor vedrà.
Sul tuo vil calunniatore
La vendetta piomberà…

Alvaro e Serafina
Oh! contento!

Ramiro
O nobil core!

Meschino, Lisetta e Cori
È un folletto in verità.

Alvaro
Don Fernando…

Ramiro
Il traditore…
È già in ceppi…

Tutti
Morirà.

Chiara
(a Picaro)
Tu che al sentier d’onore
Facesti omai ritorno,
In sì ridente giorno,
Non paventar per te.

Tutti con Chiara
Avrai del tuo buon cuore
Piena da noi mercé.

Picaro
Grato a sì gran favore,
Vi giuro eterna fé.

Chiara
Non più perigli,
Non più timori;
Omai respirano
I nostri cori;
In gioia stabile
Il duol cangiò.

Chiara e seco Tutti
Le mie speranze
Son paghe appieno;
Alfin sereno
Il ciel brillò.

Cori
In gioia stabile
Il duol cangiò.

FINE

ACT I

A seacoast with scattered Moorish ruins. On the right a rustic structure whence descends a path leading to the shore. Here and there there are arcades, broken columns, and remains of various monuments with bushes, flowers and weeds have grown. On the left there is an ancient sarcophagus; at the back some rocks rise from the sea and on one side nearer the shore is a precipice. It is nearly dawn.

SCENE I
The shore is crowded with fishemen. Some carry traps, some nets, some launch boats. Everything is in motion. Fishermen and women, then Agnese.

Women
Dawn already appears bright in the sky,
Wind and waves in the sea are quiet;
The nets and traps
Are ready to cast.

Men
Weigh the anchors, launch the boats…
What great fishing we have to do!

Women
For the wedding of dear,
Kind Serafina,
This tranquil sea
Will teem with every kind of fish.

Men
Weigh the anchors, launch the boats…
What a great catch there will be!

Agnes
Ah! If that good man my husband
Were in the country
He would be stunned
At such great solemnity.

Chorus
Why is that, Mother Agnese?

Agnese
I’ll tell you, but…
(making a sign to be silent)

Chorus
Yes, we know.

Agnese
My Sancho told me,
That Serafina’s guardian
Had himself alone caused
Her father’s ruin
And wanted to marry her
To grab the inheritance.

Chorus
Tell us, tell us: he promised her
To the son of the magistrate.

While Agnes starts to go on, Lisetta and Don Meschino shout offstage.

Meschino
Mean woman! Heart of stone!

Lisetta
Stupid ass! Baboon!

Agenese
And Lisetta is carrying on…

Chorus
With that ox Don Meschino.

All
We are waiting for a moment
When we have to laugh.

SCENE II
Lisetta, followed by Don Meschino. He is dressed in ridiculous fisherman’s attire and carries a large trap in one hand and a large basket in the other.

Meschino
With the crab pot and basket
For her I’m trading sword and pen,
And the ingrate pays no heed!
And she calls me an ass!
Mother Agnese, tell me
I don’t deserve such indignity.

Lisetta
Oh! Do you see that fine jewel
Who follows me wherever I go?
All the countryside is laughing,
And everyone keeps their distance.
Dear Mother, tell me
He is not an ass.

Agnese
Come, Lisetta, look rather…

Meschino
(interrupting)
At your future husband.

Lisetta
Oh! Now it’s time.

Meschino
Sooner or later.

Lisetta
Too late, I swear.

Meschino
Oh, hurry up, my Lisetta.

Lisetta
I’m in no hurry, I’m in no hurry.

Meschino
Do not make me waste
The full flower of my old age.

Lisetta
No, I don’t want you,
I tell you plainly:
I can’t stand
An aging yokel:
Be young again,
And then…we’ll see.

Meschino
Qh!, no, my Venus,
Take a look;
I am fresh and healthy,
I am all afire…
On all the island
I have no equal.

Chorus
Ha, ha! What a laugh!

Agnese
But come, be prudent…

Meschino
Silence, you lot;
Look! What insolence!
Lisetta, marry me,
Or I will die.

During this scene the sky clouds over; the storm
begins gradually. A thunderclap interrupts the
dialogue.

Help! What was that?

Lisetta
A storm is brewing.

Agnese and Chorus
The sea is rough, a great wind rises.

Great commotion on the shore. Some run here, some there, etc.

All Together
To the shore, comrades, row to land,
Take in the nets, tie up the boats;
A terrible hurricane is beginning to break out.
(a great tempest)
Listen to that! What winds!
Now it’s hailing, now raining in torrents;
Let’s run to shelter, get away from the sea.
(exeunt)

SCENE III
The storm grows; in the distance are ships in distress, and one of them passes near the shore tossed back and forth by the waves and dashed against the rocks it sinks. Gradually the storm subsides. Don Alvaro appears from the cliff with Chiara; both are half-dressed and completely messed up from the shipwreck. When they arrive at the top of the cliff they both kneel and raise their arms to the sky.

Chiara
Thanks to merciful heaven! We are safe,
Saved by your grace.
(They rise)

Alvaro
Support me, Daughter…
I can hardly stand up,
And I am almost fainting from the chold.
Let us go down slowly.

Chiara
Suffer a little longer. If pity is not
Exhausted on earth, two unhappy
Shipwreck victims will find help.

They come onstage. Don Alvaro sits, supported by
Chiara.

Alvaro
Oh! God! All the proofs
Of my innocence are lost;
Nothing remains for me but death.

Chiara
Do not despair; our luck will change.
(They rise again)
These lonely shores
(with great tenderness)
Will be a safe refuge,
Where you will stay well
For a better fortune.
Meanwhile I shall go alon
To search for my sister,
Whom evil destiny has taken.
I will be able to lead her to you.

Alvaro
Chiara! That will be difficult.

Chiara
Difficult! Why?
I care nothing for danger;
I am not afraid of hardship.
As an unknown beggar
I shall go unharmed.
Rest securely;
Trust in Chiara.
If heaven guides me
I shall return.

Alvaro
Where are we? This is a deserted coast.
There is not a single dwelling.

Some fishermen enter from the heights.

Chiara
Courage, Father…
I see someone approaching: we can
Learn about the country.

SCENE IV
Don Meschino, then Agnese, Lisetta and fishermen from differentdirections, and the above.

Meschino
(offstage)
Hurry up, fools… Eh, Mama Agnese!
(enters; Chiara and Don Alvaro go to him; he cries out in terror)
Oh, mercy! Help!

Agnese
What has happened?
(running)

Lisetta
What’s going on?

Meschino
Back there, back therea;
We are surrounded by murderers.

Chiara
Oh, don’t be afraid:
We are two poor refugees, shipwrecked and tossed up on these sands.

Meschino
(Ai!…they are pirates.)

Lisetta
You poor things! Such a pity.

Chiara
We beg you for shelter
For just one day.

Lisetta
With pleasure…
Isn’t that so, Mama?

Meschino
First we need to know who these people are.

Lisetta
What’s that to you?

Chiara
We are from Cadiz,
Mariners by prefession, father and son…

Alvaro
The sea took everything from us.

Meschino
That makes me feel better.

Lisetta
Idiot!

Meschino
Look how she’s taken with
The handsome sailor.

Lisetta
Here we never refuse
Hospitality to travelers.

Agnese
And you shall have it.

Meschino
But…

Agnese
You be quiet.
Come to Belmonte.

Alvaro
(To Belmonte!)

Chiara
(Caution!)

Lisetta
You have arrived
On a happy day: today the richest
Knight of Majorca, Don Fernando,
Marries his ward, and we are bringing
The fish we have caught for him
To the castle two miles from here.

Alvaro
(What do I hear?)

Chiara
(Do not reveal yourself.)

Alvaro
(Daughter, I tremble.)

Chiara
If you allow me,
I will keep you company. Meanwhile, Father,
You can rest yourself.

Agnese
You shall come with me
To Belmonte, venerable sir.

Lisetta
Let’s go, let’s go.

Meschino
(What fine company we have today!)
(exeunt)

SCENE V
Some pirates look cautiously from among the rocks; seeing the shore deserted they signal their comrades, who enter carrying their baggage, and last comes Picaro with a small box under one arm.

Chorus
Curse the tempest
That landed us here!
If our hiding place
Has been discovered
We’ll be in great danger
For sure…
Hush…Let’s take a look around…
Check out the place…
(They approach the sarcophagus and remove the stone covering it.)
Hurrah!… It’s just as
We left it a year ago:
Not even the devil could have dreamed
That an underground chamber
Hid such an ancient relic…
Not even the devil will find it.
(They all enter the underground passage carrying their baggage.)

Picaro
The Pirate’s trade,
In faith, I do not much like:
Always being in the middle of the sea,
Always exposed to fire:
Now gales, now firefights,
And finally…you know…
Think about it, imagine
A trade…that’s legal.
For example, usury:
Lend one, collect a hundred.
Trade an ounce for a bushel,
Change copper for silver…
Or gamblers, for example,
Pile up treasure with two fingers.
The apothecary who finds doubloons
In fresh water and fishes up pearls…
Tailors and shoemakers
Are the same as pirates.
And you never see
One of them . . . well, you know.
A to want to make heaps of gold
By a trade…that’s legal.
(brightly)
Yes, by Bacchus, in this world,
As wide and round as it is,
If you’re smart, the trick is
To know how to fleece the rubes,
Skin them alive
So they don’t squawk.
In conclusion, a gentleman…
You are a gentelman…if you look like one.
Enough moralizing,
And let’s put this box that I found
On the beach in a safe place.
What the devil could it be? It seems quite light.
Woe is me! Someone’s coming…
I can’t stay out here.
(he withdraws)

SCENE VI
Don Fernando and Picaro

Fernando
(Who is this,
Dressed like a foreigner?)

Picaro
(Ai! Ai! He’s approaching.)

Fernando
(I’ve seen him somewhere before…)
I’m not imagining it. It’s that scoundrel…

Picaro
(He recognized me.)

Fernando
Picaro!

Picaro
Oh! Whom do I see?
Don Fernando!

Fernando
You, here!

Picaro
Washed ashore by the sea,
Shipwrecked, desperate, to my native shores
After fifteen years of perils and stress
I return, just as I left, penniless.

Fernando
What have you been up to?

Picaro
I’m sailor.
Oh! I would never, my good master,
Ever have left you!

Fernando
(He could
Fit in with my plan.) If you want
You could get rich once again.

Picaro
Rich! I wish to heaven!

Fernando
Be still and listen.
You know that Don Alvaro
Surprised together with Chiara,
His first daughter, by Barbareschi,
Was condemned to die by the hated king
And ended his days in exile.

Picaro
I only know that you,
By sending a thousand dogs after him,
Were the cause of his ruin.

Fernando
I became Serafina’s guardian.

Picaro
The younger daughter!

Fernando
Yes, she grew up to be
Beautiful, kind…

Picaro
And rich.
A nice bit of crumpet for you!

Fernando
She will be for certain if you’re willing to help me
If not, today she is to marry the son
Of the mayor: I have to hold my tongue with him,
Nor do I have the authority to stop this wedding.

Picaro
The case is as serious as that…What can I do?

Fernando
There is a rumor going about
That Don Alvaro is alive…

Picaro
I get it: you want
To resuscitate the father.

Fernando
And you are he.

Picaro
Bravo! A nice subterfuge.
But I…

Fernando
You will have a thousand piastres from me.

Picaro
A thousand piastres!…Oh, Satan, get thee behind me.

Fernando
Make up your mind…

Picaro
I’m ready.

Fernando
Swear to it.

Picaro
I swear.

Fernando
Follow me. I’ll tell you
All about what you have to do.

Picaro
A thousand piastres! This is a good beginning.
(exeunt)

SCENE VII
The scene is a rustic dwelling in the gardens
of Don Fernando’s castle, designed like a cottage:
at the rear and a gate opening to the countryside.
Don Ramiro and Serafina
.

Serafina
How sweetly wafts
The breeze from flower to flower!
Darling! It is like
A sigh of love.

Ramiro
How peacerul and clear
Is the splendor of the sky!
Darling! It is like
A smile of love.

Ramiro and Serafina
Thus, my sweet,
Love foretells by this
Joyful days
That we shall live together.

Serafina
With you always!…Oh, what a lovely thought!

Ramiro
With me always!…Oh, what perfect happiness!

Serafina and Ramiro
My angel, the future holds
No pain and suffering for us.
My life will go on
Like a lovely dream.

SCENE VIII
Don Fernando and the above, then Picaro dressed as a sea captain. Don Fernando enters looking agitated.

Fernando
Oh, what an unexpected event!…

Serafina
What has happened, Sir?

Fernando
Ah, Serafina!
The surprise…the pleasure…heaven willed
That this day be filled with joy.

Serafina
What can it be? Speak.

Fernando
You are no longer an orphan.

Ramiro
What are you saying?

Serafina
My father!…

Fernando
You shall see him.

Serafina
Oh, joy! And can it be true?

Fernando
He has finally obtained his freedom
From the Barbary pirates.

Serafina
Heaven be thanked.

Fernando
He arrived
On Majorca this morning.

Serafina
Let us run to him.

Ramiro
Let us hurry. I so want to embrace him.

Fernando
Come out, my friend.
(running to Picaro, who appears)

Picaro
(with open arms)
O my daughter!

Serafina
O my father!

Picaro
O inexpressible happiness!

Serafina
O ineffable pleasure!

Fernando
(Bravo, you scoundrel!)

Picaro
(What a bonny wench!)

Ramiro
Allow me
To clasp you to my breast.

Fernando
This, my friend,
Is the young gentleman I have chosen
As a husband for your daughter.

Picaro
My son-in-law, embrace me.

Fernando
(Marvelous!)

SCENE IX
A guitar prelude sounds. Chiara looks watches from behind the gate at the back of the garden.

Picaro
Music! All the better.
I like the sprightliness.

Fernando
(seeing Chiara, who offers her hand)
It is a sailor,
Looking through the gate.

Ramiro
He is begging for alms.

Serafina
Bid him enter.

Chiara is admitted and enters playing; nearing them, she stops, takes a note from her purse and holds it out.

Ramiro
(reads)
“Kind souls, have compassion for a poor orphan
escaped from prison in Algiers and deprived of
speech.”

Serafina
When I find a father, an orphan
Does not ask my help in vain.

Ramiro
Excellent Serafina!

Chiara
(Oh, joy! It is she.)

Serafina
I’ll collect it for you
Myself, you poor man.

Everyone takes his purse and gives money to Serafina.

Picaro
Good daughter!
I admire your kind heart.

Chiara
(Who is this man
Who calls himself her father?)

Serafina
(to Chiara)
Take this, take heart, and depart with gladness.
(Chiara kisses Serafina’s hand, starts to leave, but turns back, and kissing her hand again, she makes signs of sadness.)
You are weeping? Does it pain you to go?
Do you have no place to stay?
(Chiara gestures no)
Oh, Father!
Let him stay with us…

Fernando
(quietly to Picaro)
(He’s mute, let him stay: he can be of use to us.)

Picaro
Of course, my daughter, whatever pleases you.

Chiara
(expresses her pleasure with signs)
(Heaven, aid my efforts.)

Fernando
(to Chiara)
You will come to the castle with me.

Picaro
Son-in-law,
I am a bit tired;
We will meet again later.

Ramiro
Farewell, Sir.

Picaro
(to Serafina)
I wish to speak to you privately.

Chiara
(uses the time to approach Don Ramiro)
(You are being deceived:
Return in a while.)

Ramiro
(surprised)
(Oh, heavens!)

Chiara
(Hush.)

Don Ramiro leaves through the gate. Don Fernando with Chiara by another exit.

SCENE X
Picaro and Serafina.

Picaro
We are alone

Serafina
What is it?

Picaro
Embrace me, my daughter,
And hear my last farewell.

Serafina
Heavens! What are you saying?

Picaro
I must go:
To see you, O my daughter,
I disregarded the fact that I am proscribed:
But the edict that condemned me to death.
Is still in force.
If I stay an hour longer
My daughter, I shall die.

Serafina
Calm you fears, Fatherh,
Let my betrothed at least help you:
Explain to the mayor
The danger you are in…
He has a generous and humane hert,
And will save your live.

Picaro
A vain hope! He will never
Betray his duty.

Serafina
Oh! So what is your plan?

Picaro
To leave you…do flee…

Serafina
To flee!…

Picaro
Ah! Yes, I must.

Serafina
O woe!

Picaro
(She walks into my snare.)

Serafina
That I lose you again!

Picaro
Ah! Unfortunately. (Rejoice: she’s caught.)

Serafina
(embracing him)
Do not think of it: wherever you go
(fervently)
My love will follow you.

Picaro
Blessed girl!
(goes to embrace her)
(Ah! I forgot I’m her father.)

Serafina
Oh, forgive me, my love,
If I leave you for a moment…
I feel, Lord, that I am a daughter,
And nature wills it of me.
But I will surely remain
Faithful and contant to you.

Picaro
Oh, to have to leave to another
Such an appetizing morsel!
I, a pirate! Ah, no, I am not
Such a fool, in faith.
If you have needof a rogue,
Don Fernando, come to me.
Embrace me, clasp me
My beautiful…daughter…
Such tender love
Will be my consolation…
Let us depart and throw oursleves
At the king’s feet.

Serafina
I will join my tears
To your prayers:
If it is true that your troubles
Would yield to tears,
The kind-hearted king
Cannot but absolve you.

Picaro and Serafina
We shall return
Happy and jubilant;
We shall make the wedding
More splendid and joyous…

Serafina
(O Love, that arms me
With so much courage,
Smile on the hopes
And faith of my heart.)

Picaro
(If I can pinch
Such a sweet jewel,
By Neptune, there won’t be
A more ecstatic corsair.)
(exeunt)

SCENE XI
Chiara alone, then Don Fernando and Picaro from opposite sides.

Chiara
May I not see him even
For a brief moment? Oh, Fortune, you
Who led me to these walls just in time,
Oh, do not forsake me in this
Vital endeavor…Help me discover the plot.
Someone is coming. I’ll watch…
(She withdraws)

Fernando
(meeting Picaro)
Well?…

Picaro
(laughing)
She has turned into
An obedient daughter,
And is ready to go.

Fernando
Excellent.
The carriage is ready, and a loyal servant
To take you to Belmonte. There you may
Rest tonight, and at daybreak
Wait for the ship
That I have hired for you…
You shall wait at Cadiz for my arrival.

Chiara
(Villain!)

Fernando
Here is a paper
Describing what to do
In case of danger,
And where to find a hiding place.

Picaro
Good…but you have forgotten
The most important thing.

Fernando
Here is the purse.

Picaro
Blessed purse! Let us depart without delay,
Before Don Ramiro surprises us.
(exeunt)

Chiara
I must hurry to him…Oh! what a horrid scheme!
(exit through the gate)

SCENE XII
An ancient hall in the abandoned castle of Belmonte.
On one side is a square pedestal with a statu of a
warrior trampling on an African. Two lateral doors
closed; on the right the main entrance half-open.
The stage is dark. Subterranean noise is heard.
The pedestal opens and Spalatro emerges from
a trap door, then five or six pirates with a lighted
lantern.

Spalatro
Quiet, quiet…take it slow…
(entering cautiously)
Hold the lantern over here.
Know that you can get
To the castle through the cistern…
If the castle is deserted,
Good for us; it will work.

All
Let us check everywhere,
Inspect all sides.
(they look around)

SCENE XIII
Don Meschino and the above.

Meschino
(from within)
Ho! Lisetta!

Spalatro
Someone is coming.
(they withdraw to the back of the hall unseen by Don Meschino, who enters slowly with a candelabra etc.)

Meschino
Lisetta! I say…Ha ha! The little vixen
Has deliberately had me
Running up and down while she hides.
But this must be the room
Meant for the celebration! Ugh! Wht an ugly place!
Ugh! Old walls covered with soot!

Spalatro
(Damn him!)

Meschino
Hey! My ears are ringing.
I bet Lisetta,
To mock me, is spying through some chink
To see if I’m trembling…Ha!…trembling!
If that hussy is here she’ll hear me sing,
(He sets down the candelabra and sings, accompanying himself with castanets.)
My grandmother told me
That in the world there is a sprite
That at the foot of your bed at night
Plays a thousand different pranks.
Lara-lara-
She was telling the truth.
The sprite, my Lisa,
You have him in your eyes, I in my heart.
It is a flame, an itch
That I can’t understand…
Lara – lara –
The sprite is beauty.
(Spalatro and the pirates stir; Don Meschino stops, suspicious)
This time…I’m not imagining…

Pirates
(Come on.)
(They put out Don Meschino’s candles.)

Meschino
The lights have gone out.
Hey!
(He finds himself in their midst and falls to his knees facing the ground.)

Pirates
Silence, or I’ll cut your throat.
(Let’s take advantage of his fright,
And get out of here now.)

Meschino
Ai! Help!…Mercy!

SCENE XIV
As soon as the pirates have decamped through the trap door, Agnese, Lisetta, Don Alvaro, and peasants with torches enter, hearing Don Meschino’s cries.

All
What happened? Don Meschino!
Help this baboon.

Meschino
Mercy…Kind Turks…

All
Turks! We!…Ha ha ha!
(great laughter)

Meschino
Yes sirs, yes sirs,
I saw them, I touched them
There were twenty of them, all black,
Extremely tall…
But by gum, I raised my fists…
They learned to respect me.
(hearty laughter)
You laugh!…you ugly mugs!
Don’t irritate me.
My Lisetta, don’t come
In here alone
They are Turks, Pirates
Who want to kidnap you,
And I won’t always be here,
Poor girl, to defend you.
If they carry you of to Turkey
I won’t be able to marry you.

All
Fool! Buffoon! Go on…
Fear has blinded you.
(exit Don Meschino)

SCENE XV
Agnese, Lisetta, Don Alvaro, village men and women.

Agnese
Enough: don’t pay any mind
To his idiocy…

Lisetta
Turks, pirates…
He has been dreaming of them ever since
He heard the story of Don Alvaro.

Alvaro
Of Don Alvaro!

Lisetta
Yes. It’s well known in these parts.
He freed Belmonte
From the Barbary pirates: that statue
Was erected in his honor.
(pointing to the statue)

Alvaro
(Ah, the memory!
Ah, my former glory!)

Lisetta
His memory is celebrated every year.
But you seem moved…Did you
Perhaps know that good man?

Alvaro
I lived always
At his side.

Agnese
Then you will be glad
To hear the story. Lisetta will sing it.

Lisetta
With pleasure, if you would like to hear it.

Alvaro
(O my weeping heart! Do not give me away.)

All gather around Lisetta in different groups.

Lisetta
The castle of Belmonte
Was defended by no one.
Exposed to be disgraced by corairs,
It was surprised one day…
But that brutal outrage
Was not long unavenged…
The courage of Don Alvaro
Freed the inhabitants.

Chorus
The courage of Don Alvaro
Freed the inhabitants.

Lisetta
Under cover of night,
With a small band of friends
He climbed the castle wall
And laid waste the enemy…
All the island honors him
As the defending hero;
But Belmonte especially worships him
As its benefactor.

Chorus
But Belmonte especially worships him
As its benefactor.

During the singing, Don Alvaro appears touched. The ritornello of the third verse begins; a knock at the main door is heard. Everyone gets up. Don Meschino enters.

Agnese
They won.

Alvaro
And perhaps Carlos
Is finally returning from Palma.

Lisetta
Yes, let’s hope so: I’m going to give him a scolding,
He gave us plenty of worry.

Meschino
(returning)
Mama Agnese…just now
A letter arrived by coach.

Agnese and Lisetta
Dimwit!

Meschino
Come take a look.

Chorus
(returning)
(Blockhead!) It is a foreigner
Who brings important letter
For you from the city.

SCENE XII
Picaro and Serafina, wearing a large veil, and the above.

Picaro
(entering)
(So many people!)

Serafina
(I am shaking.)

Chorus
Come in: Agnese is here.

Picaro
Don Fernando sends me to you.

Alvaro
(Don Fernando!)

All
(What is it?)

Agnese takes theletter. Don Meschino and Chiara place it between them and read together, glacing at Picaro and Serafina now and then. Don Alvaro stands aside watching. All eyes are turned toward the foreigners. Picaro and Serafina notice and speak to each other.

Picaro and Serafina
(What a hindrance! The whole village
Is gathered here.)

Alvaro
(Why ever does she keep her face
Covered so mysteriously?)

Meschino, Lisetta, and Chiara
(reading and interrupting one another)
(Secrecy!…very pressing…
A minor matter…a knight…)

Picaro and Serafina
(I am beginning to quake
With fear and suspicion.)

Alvaro
(I feel a thousand movements in my breast
That I cannot explain.)

Meschino, Agnese, and Lisetta
(Ha! We must be respectful
And mind not to talk.)

Agnese comes forward bowing.

Agnese
My master Don Fernando…

Meschino
Let me talk…I have more sense…
(pulling her back)
This letter bids us
Be ready…at your command…
That is, to give you lodging…
To serve you…to help you…
To feed you at our expense
Without expecting thanks.
Go at once, Mama Agnese,
And prepare supper and beds.

Chorus
(laughing)
Bravo! Bravo!

Meschino
(applauding himself)
Ha! What do you say about that?

Picaro
I am pleased by your zeal.

Lisetta
Miss, allow me
To to relieve you of this veil…

Serafina
It’s no bother…

Meschino
(interrupting her)
(going to lift the veil)
But Madam…

Picaro
No…there’s no need. (Go to the devil.)
(pushing him away casually)

Meschino
(to Lisetta)
(Oh, she must be really ugly
If she can’t bear to be seen.)

Alvaro
(aside)
(What insolence!)

Serafina
(softly to Picaro)
(I’m all atremble!)

Picaro
(likewise)
(Please don’t give yourself away.)
Good Agnese, my daughter
Is very tired.

Meschino
She can hardly move.

Picaro
Dismiss the family
And get us some supper.

Meschino
Did you hear?

Chorus
We heard.

Meschino
Let us take our leave and go.

All
Good night, sleep well.

Meschino
We’ll alert Mama Agnese.

Meschino, Alvaro, Lisetta, and Agnese
That insistence on keeping covered
Really makes me wonder.

Picaro
Thank heaven she wasn’t discovered,
I can finally breathe again.

Serafina
Thank heaven I wasn’t discovered,
I can finally breathe again.

All
We’ll be back tomorrow morning,
We shall come to pay our respects.

Picaro and Serafina
Thank you, thank you: until then.
(They go on forever!)

All
Good night, sleep well.

All the villagers exit with Don Meschino and Lisetta by the main door; Agnese accompanies Serafino and Picaro into the apartment at right; she leaves the candelabra with Picaro and exits by the main door. Meanwhile Don Alvaro withdraws to the left rear of the stage.

SCENE XVII
It is night. Chiara appears hurriedly.

Chiara
Here I am finally…Oh, joy!
I return safe and unscathed.
Heaven speed my endeavor,
Foil the traitor.
Help me to save my sister,
And do not expose my father.
(exit by the same door as Don Alvaro)

SCENE XVIII
Picaro enters warily from his room holdinga candle. Then Chiara returning with Don Alvaro.

Picaro
Finally the room is free:
I’m not running any danger:
Let us examine the bedrooms,
Let’s look for the hiding place,
Don Fernando’s letter
Will tell me all.
(reads)
“In case of danger…in the great hall…a statue…behind the pedestl…a trap
door…leads to an old cistern known only to me.”
This must be the statue…
The pedestal is there…
(goes behind the statue and examines the trapdoor; meanwhile Chiara enters with Don Alvaro)

Chiara
Come and keep watch on the villain
Until help arrives.

Alvaro
I’m trembling, Chiara.

Chiara
Calm yourself.
No one believes you are alive.
(at this point Picaro enters and stops at a distance surprised)

Picaro
(What do I hear?)

Alvaro
And Don Ramiro?

Chiara
He knows my name only.

Picaro
(What should I do?)

Alvaro
I breathe.

Chiara
He will be here soon.

Alvaro
At last a ray of joy
Promises a clear sky:
In the bosom of my daughters
I shall be happy again.

Chiara
At last a ray of joy
Promises a clear sky:
In the bosom of your daughters
You shall be happy again.

Picaro
Courage do not desert me,
Or I am totally lost…
At least I have one more ploy
For getting them out of the way.
(He goes resolutely up to them; they are startled by the sound and cry out when they see him.)

Chiara and Alvaro
Oh!

Picaro
Hush…I heard everything.

Chiara
Scoundrel!

Picaro
(submissively)
Don’t be afraid…
I was seduced, it’s true; I wronged you:
But you see me repentant.

Chiara
You, penitent!

Alvaro
You, an impostor!

Picaro
Please listen to me;
If you show me mercy,
I shall reveal a weighty secret.
The sentence condeming you
To death has been revoked.

Chiara and Alvaro
What are you saying? How? When?

Picaro
I know where to find the decree.

Chiara
Who has it?

Picaro
Don Fernando…
But the villain keeps it secret.

Chiara and Alvaro
What means do we have
Of wresting it from his grasp.

Picaro
Threats and cries are useless;
Only cunning can succeed.
(mysteriously)

Don Ramiro
(to Alvaro)
Look for him,
But bring him to me alone…
For my plan to succeed
We must be very devious…
(to Chiara)
You, my lady, take me
Secretly to Serafina.

Chiara and Alvaro
If you are lying, if you deceive us,
Woe to you; be afraid:
You are lost, you are dead,
If I find you disloyal.
(There’s no harm in trusting him:
Whatever he does, he cannot get away.)

Picaro
Do not fear that I deceive you:
I despise my transgressions:
I would kill Don Fernando
For dragging me into error…
(The ruse is original,
I am being like a pirate.)
(Don Alvaro exits hurriedly by the main eood)

SCENE XIX
Picaro, Chiara, then Serafina and the chorus offstage.

Picaro
Come in…
(as soon as Chiara is at the door of the apartment on the left, Picaro gives her a push and closes it)
There’s one in the cage.
Let’s close this other door.
(closes the center door, then opens the apartment on the right)

Chiara
(from within)
Help! Oh! Fury!

Picaro
I am found out: let’s get away.

Chorus
(from within)
Don Alvaro.

Serafina
(onstage)
What do I hear?

Picaro
(onstage)
They are looking for me.

Serafina
Oh, you startled me!

Picaro
Courage: come with me

Voices from within
Guards…help…hallo!

Serafina
Your air of menace
Frightens me.

Picaro
We’ll find a secret
Hiding place down there.

A violent knocking at the outside door. Chiara makes herself heard from the left. Picaro opens the trap door, then quickly seizes Serafina’s hand.

Voices from within
The impostor is locked in here…
Knock down the door…

Serafina
Oh, heaven, protect my father,
Save him, for pity’s sake.

Picaro
Come…be brave…go down…
No one will find us.

As soon as Picaro has gone through the trap door with Serafina, the outside door falls, and Don Alvaro, Don Ramiro, Don Meschino, Agnes, Lisetta, villagers, and constables rush in. Alvaro hears Chiara and frees
her.

SCENE XX

Chiara
Father!

Alvaro
Daughter!

Ramiro
Where is the culprit?

Chiara
He betrayed us.

Alvaro and Ramiro
Oh, what bad luck!

Chiara
He has escaped, to our shame.

All
Break down those doors.
(the apartment on the right is opened and found empty)
Serafina!…Serafina!
Ah! The poor girl is lost.

Chiara
He has escaped…He betrayed us.

Alvaro
Oh! Misfortune!

Ramiro
Oh! Adversity!

Meschino
If he has not escaped into thin air
We will find him in the castle.

Chiara, Alvaro, and Ramiro
Ah! Seek out, capture,
And punish the felon…
There is no place he can hide
Where my fury cannot find him.
He will pay for such perfidy
With his blood, with his life.

Chiara
(If my sister is taken from me,
The grief will kill me.)

Alvaro
(If my daughter is taken from me,
The grief will kill me.)

Ramiro
(If my bride is taken from me,
The grief will kill me.)

Meschino
Quick…a firearm…
Onward to battle ahead of me…
The scoundrel will meet his match,
I want to smash in his skull.
My wrath will find him
By the fastest route.
(Help me, my legs,
Find a way out of here.)

Agnese, Lisetta, and Chorus
Yes, let’s look in every corner,
From top to bottom, up and down;
Let the castle go up in flames,
But the felon will be discovered;
He will find every road
And every exit blocked.
He will pay for such perfidy
With his blood, with his life.

ACT II

Inside and ancient cistern. At rear, on one side, a closed door; on the other, an opening to a spiral stairway appearing to lead to upper corridors of the castle and to the trap door of the statue where Picaro is hidden with Serafina. On either side are ruins, arcades, and hidden crannies. It is night.

SCENE I
The pirates are in groups here and there sleeping. Spalatro emerges hurriedly from the ruins.

Spalatro
(submissively)
Captain!…

All
(awakening)
What has happened?

Spalatro
Listen…
We are about to be attacked…
The ruins are all occupied,
The routes to leading to the sea closed off.

All
Oh!

Gennaro
Silence!…someone has betrayed us…
Maybe Picaro…it can’t be anyone else…
Yes, this morning the sly fox disappeared…
He’ll be revealing this hideaway.

All
That base traitor is fooling himself,
We had better look for a refuge.

Gennaro
Our refuge is our courage;
We must defy all danger.

All
Yes, courage, let’s run to the entrance
And block access to the archers;
If the narrow passage is cut off,
We must invade the castle.
Our refuge is in our courage,
We must defy all danger.
(the pirates run into the ruins on the right)

SCENE II
Spalatro, Gennaro, then Don Meschino among the pirates, finally Chiara.

Gennaro
Spalatro, stay at my side:
If the others are slain,
We will escape by the secret staircase
That leads to the castle. There
We will not find enemies: they will all be
Together trying to find us down here.

A pistol shot is heard.

Spalatro
A shot!

Don Meschino appears.

Meschino
Help!

Pirates
Stop.

Meschino
I am turned to stone.

Gennaro
Who are you? Who led you,
Bold as brass, down here?

Meschino
I am…But wait,
You’re making me choke
On my words. I am…sirs…
The nephew of my uncle the magistrate,
Turned to fishing for love.

Gennaro
Ha ha! You are the nephew
Of Uncle Magistrate…So you come here,
You rascal, to spy on us!

Spalatro
You are the captain of the watch.

Meschino
No, sirs, that’s not my job.
And villagers and constables
Are not looking for you: they are hunting
The daughter of a certain Don Fernando
Kidnaped by a scoundrel,
And I am joining them out of compassion.

While the pirates are all occupied with Meschino, Chiara enters unseen from the back and, seeing the danger, crosses the stage quickly and disappears into the twisting passages.

Gennaro
And are you so reckless
As to come into this place?

Meschino
I didn’t think
I would find such noble company…
Chiara…and my fiancé
Came in first: they saw an ancient
Open sarcophagus, and suspecting
That the abductor might be hidden here…
They dragged me along with them.

Spalatro
Where are these females?

Meschino
Truly, in the dark
In all these labyrinths I lost them.
And I was just looking for them
When I surprised me.

Gennaro
Spalatro, run after
These curious women and search
Every passage. This one stays here
Until we are sure of the truth.
If he makes a move, kill him…Let’s go, friends.

SCENE III
The stage remains completely dark; a single lantern hangs from a rock in the rear. Don Meschino, then Chiara.

Meschino
Good night!…I’m done for,
I’ll never get out of here.

Chiara
(from the back)
They are gone…
Let’s look for a way out.

Meschino
I had just said
There were some pirates here.

Chiara
Someone’s talking.

Meschino
I heard a footstep.

Chiara
Don Meschino!

Meschino
What! You!

Chiara
Shh! It is I.

Meschino
Ah! Miss, we’ve done it!
This is a pirate’s den:
We are good and buried
Before dying.

Chiara
If Lisetta has avoided
Being seen by the pirates,
We can likewise find
A way to get out.

Meschino
I hope so! But the villains
Are looking all up and down.

Chiara
No matter: let’s go ahead,
We’ll force our way through.

Meschino
We!

Chiara
Yes, we.

Meschino
Come on, you’re joking!
There will be shooting.

Chiara
If you’re hesitant, if you are afraid,
Stay here. I’ll go by myself.

Meschino
Oh! Wait a minute.

Chiara
Then come on.

Meschino
Slow down a bit.

Chiara
Oh, heaven guide my lost feet,
Open a way, I pray:
Let your favor be with me
In this horrid creepy place.

Meschino
If I stay here, I’m done for…
If I go ou…oh, what a risk!
Out of the frying pan into the fire.
There’s no coming out of this with honor.

Chiara
Come on, make up your mind, let’s go.

Meschino
No, by Jove, I’ve decided.

Chiara
Be careful!

Meschino
I’m firm.

Chiara
Stay by me.

Meschino
(Legs, help me.)

Chiara
With good luck and courage
A path will show up.

Meschino
Ah! If I reach safety
It will be a miracle.
All my remaining days
Are confined underground.

SCENE IV
Picaro and Serafina. They descend the stairs at the back of the cistern. From above.

Serafin
Where are you taking me? In all this
Underground maze of tunnels
We’ll lose our way.

Picaro
Go down: we’ve come
To a bigger space.
Don’t be afraid…(it looks as if the game is spoiled.)
What do I see?
(softly)
It’s true…

Serafina
What is it? You’re lost!…

Picaro
Nothing… let me
Think….explore…(Ah! This is a hideout
Of some of my comrades…
If they haven’t left, in truth, I’m done for…
It’ll be a wonder if I get out…)

Serafina
Well…father?

Picaro
Well, my daughter…
I don’t see here…the way out.

Serafina
Oh, woe!

Picaro
Maybe this long tunnel
Leads to an opening…I must
Have a look at once…be still and wait
Here for me.

Serafina
Heavens! You want
Me to stay here alone?

Picaro
Just for a moment
Until I see…a better way for you…
Where this dark tunnel leads…
(I hope they are gone!…Don’t be afraid.
(disappears off to the left)

SCENE V
Serafina alone.

Serafina
What a terrible situation!
What a dismal fate!…Whatever will become
Of us, miserable creatures, if Father
Doesn’t find an escape route? O you,
Who may be doubting my fidelity…
O my betrothed!…Will I ever see you again?
Among these shadows, in this horror,
I call to you, my dearest.
But sadly, my sigh of love
Does not reach you…
It is lost unheard
Among these shadows, in this horror.
There is a noise coming from the tunnels.
Heavens!…what is this commotion?

Voices from within
Forward.

Serafina
Oh, alas!
Father has been discovered.

SCENE SIX
The cistern is illumined, and Gennaro and Spalatro enter followed by pirates holding Chiara, Don Meschino, and Lisetta; then Picaro.

Gennaro
You won’t escape again, I warn you.
What’s this!…another woman?…

Serafina
Father…oh, Father!…where are you?…

Picaro enters and stops at the back of the stage.

Gennaro
(leading her by the arm)
This way miss.

Picaro
(It’s they.)

Chiara
(recognizing Serafina)
Ah! Serafina!

Lisetta
She’s in the hands of the villains, too!

Meschino
Oh! This one is lovely.

Chiara
Let me be, you brute…O my sister!

Serafina
I…you!…What are you saying?… Alas!
Who are these men?

Chiara
A traitor delivered you
Into the hands of pirates: the scoundrel you are following
Is not your father.

Serafina
Oh! Betrayal!

Chiara
His name is Picaro.

Pirates
Picaro!

Picaro
(Be bold!
Before you die
Do one good thing.)

Gennaro
(menacingly)
Where is he?

Picaro
(revealing himself)
Here he is, and he brings you a thousand piastres.
(throws down the purse Don Fernando gave him)

Gennaro
A thousand piastres!

Picaro
Take it, look it over…
But have respect for her…A great lord
(importantly)
Has put her in my care…
I shall tell you why…it is enough that you know
That we have found a gold mine.

Pirate
Bravo! Picaro, bravo!

Serafina
Oh! You villain!
I was your prey!… Oh, how painful!
I was your slave! Oh, blackest infamy!
My hand will take from you
The wages of your perfidy.

Spalatro and Gennaro
Pay no attention to her raving.

Picaro and Pirates
It will pass…
She’ll be compliant.

Serafina, Chiara, Lisetta, and Meschino
Heaven, if you suffer this traitor
What use are your thunderbolts?

Gennaro
Eh! Have the harpy
Locked up in our storeroom.

The pirates separate her from Chiara.

Serafina and Chiara
Oh! You ruffians…at least let us be together…

Picaro
(pointing to Lisetta)
Let this one keep her company.

Meschino
Good night, my Lisetta.

Pirati
Separate them.

Serafina, Chiara, Meschino, and Lisetta
Oh, the cruelty!

While the pirates push back Chiara and Meschino, Picaro seizes the moment to approach Serafina:

Picaro
Hush…Pretend…and wait calmly…
You will all have your freedom.

Serafina lets out a cry of surprise. Picaro signals them to remain quiet.

Serafina
(Is is possible! O merciful heaven!…
I do not know what to believe; I dare not speak…
Can I trust the traitor!
Ah! I feel my heart splitting.)

Pirates
Quick, let’s get going, split up.

Serafina, Meschino, Lisetta, and Chiara
Farewell.

Picaro
(whispering to Serafina)
Take comfort, you will be safe.

Serafina
(comforted)
With stalwart souls, we scorn fate;
One day we shall be happy again.

Serafina, Meschino, Lisetta, and Chiara
Ah! I feel my heart splitting.

Serafina and Lisetta are led to the back of the stage and locked up.

SCENE VII
Picaro, Gennaro, Spalatro, and Pirates. Chiara and Don Meschina at a distance much agitated.

Gennaro
Picaro, step lively!
It’s a nice bit of booty you’ve brought in!

Spalatro
The most reprobate
Are the most wealthy.

Picaro
Compliments from the crew.

Chiara
(Oh! the villains!)

Meschino
(Please, be quiet,
Or else were lost.)

Gennaro
Now that you have proven
Your loyalty and shared your earnings
With us, justice demands
That you have part
Of our spoils as well.
(takes the chest that he Picaro was carrying in Act One)

Spalatro
(laughing)
That’s a nice present
You’re giving him, Captain!

Gennaro
Take it, Picaro.

Picaro
Ha ha! You give me nothing.
That little box
Was alreay mine; I found it this morning
On the beach.

Chiara
(Heaven! Those are
My father’s letters.)

Picaro
(reads letter from the box)
Algiers…and on…
What the devil!…a letter…
Proof of innocence…
(loudly toward Chiara: she comes closer)
Of Don Alvaro…Oh! look at how the little clown
Wants a look
At these papers, and look at them
With love and desire,
Like the son of a prosecutor!
Well, I can be generous too,
(joking)
When I want to…Here, take it, boy,
I make a present of it.

Chiara
Oh, joy!

Gennaro
He’s really grateful.
But let’s stop fooling around
And think about leaving…the sea is calm,
High tide is at night: let’s see if the way
Is clear of archers.

Meschino
Don’t worry…
No one knows your are here…
They are only looking for him…
(pointing to Picaro)
Just go,
And let us go home
In return for the helpful information.

Gennaro
Look what a fine counselor! Don’t hope for that.
Picaro, while we take a look around,
Watch the prisoners.

Picaro
Go, go.
They are in good hands.
(softly to Chiara)
(Courage!)

Chiara
(What is he saying!)

Meschino
(Savages! Dogs!)

Gennaro, Spalatro, and the pirates depart.

SCENE VIII
Picaro, Chiara, and Don Meschino.
As soon as the pirates have left, Picaro goes to the back of the stage, listening attentively whether they have gone. Gradually the sound of their footsteps subsides.

Meschino
Chiara!…Well? This time
We are really in a fix.

Chiara
My mind is so confused
That I don’t know whether to hope or fear.

Picaro
(No one sees me, no one hears me,
Let my plan proceed.)

Meschino
If I do not die of fear
I surely will never die.

Chiara
But I am ready whatever happens,
And I shall not lose heart.

Picaro
(If I succeed in my design,
I shall be a gentleman again.)
(after making sure that the pirates are far away, he steals over to Chiara and Meschino)
Listen.

Meschino
Hey! We’re here.

Chiara
What are you doing?

Picaro
Don’t be afraid.
I want to free you, save you…

Chiara and Meschino
You!…is it possible!

Picaro
Wait!
(goes to open the door where Serafina and Lisetta are confined)

Meschino
He’s really doing it.

Chiara
Oh, heaven! What is to be?

SCENE IX
Picaro brings out Serafina and Lisetta

Chiara
My sister!

Serafina
My Chiara.

Chiara, Serafina, Lisetta, and Meschino
We are free! Oh, happiness!
I see you!… I am beside myself.

Picaro
Calm down a moment,
Think first…we have to figure this out.
(all pay attention)
I led Serafina here by a route
That only I know;
But in confusion in the dark
I locked the door to it:
I will any way I can
To force it, to break it down.
(to Don Meschino)
Meanwhile you stay
Out there to keep a lookout:
At the slightest sound
(to Chiara)
You close this one and that one:
Call me, and I’ll come back
Right away.
Understood?

Chiara, Serafina, and Lisettta
Perfectly.

Meschino
I’ll sneak over there.

Chiara, Serafina, Lisetta, Meschino, and Picaro
Let’s get to work…no delaying…
Every ear on alert…
One hesitation, one slip,
Can reveal and betray us.
(Meschino enters the tunnels. Picaro ascends the stairway.)

SCENE X
Serafina, Chiara, and Lisetta

Serafina, Chiara, and Lisetta
Dazed and trembling
Between hope and doubt,
My heart is leaping
And beating wildly.

Picaro is heard breaking the door above.

Serafina
Listen…

Lisetta
He’s climed up.

Chiara
Now he’s reached the door.

Serafina
It’s resisting…

Lisetta
It won’t yield…

Chiara
Oh, woe!

Lisetta
Oh, terror!
Dazed and trembling
Between hope and doubt
My heart is leaping
And beating wildly.

SCENE XI
Picaro descends rapidly, followed by Don Ramiro and constables, etc. Then Don Meschino enters from the tunnels.

Chiara
Quiet! He’s coming down at last.

Lisetta
He’s not alone.

Serafina
What do I see?

Picaro and Ramiro
Courage
(from the stairs)

Chiara, Lisetta, and Serafina
Don Ramiro!

Meschino
(from the tunnels)
What shouting!…Well, now, what’s going on?

Lisetta
(pointing to Picaro and Ramiro descending)
Look.

Meschino
Hurrah! Hurrah!

Serafina
My betrothed!

Ramiro
My bride!

Meschino
By Jove, we’re safe.

Ramiro
Ah, my treasure, I thought
I would never see you again.
As much as I suffered for your sake,
I rejoice equally for you.
No, you shall never again
Be taken from me.

Chiara, Lisetta, and Serafina
Oh, joy! Oh, happy time!

Meschino
Truly a fine pirate!
(embraces Picaro)

Chiara, Lisetta, Serafina, and Ramiro
(to Picaro)
Ah, yes, you are the cause
Of all my happiness.

Picaro
How can I make amends
For all the trouble I have caused you?

All surround Picaro and comfort him.

Ramiro, Chiara, Serafina, and Lisetta
Ah! May merciful heaven reward you
For all your endeavors.
Such a good deed has canceled
Any offense or transgression.

Picaro
Since luck has allowed
Me to restore you to your father,
Do not hate a malefactor,
And I will be amply repaid.

Meschino
Oh, there are noble gentlemen, sure,
Who don’t have such a stout heart.
I shall ask my uncle the magistrate
For clemency for you.

Don Meschino, Serafina, Chiara, and Lisetta exit rapidly by the stairway at the back of the cistern. Picaro and Don Ramiro remain with the constables.

SCENE X
Picaro, Don Ramiro, and Guards

Ramiro
Picaro, now let’s run
After the Pirates.

Picaro
Soon they will return
To this place
To gather their booty, and they’ll go
Straight to set sail
Where the way seems to them safest.
It’s best to wait here and take them
By surprise.

Ramiro
First of all we need
To guard the entrance.

Picaro
I think I hear
Distant footsteps: let’s hurry
And hide in the ruins.

Ramiro
Don’t make a sound. Courage.

Picaro
Let’s go.

As soon as they have gone, the sound of a scuffle and gunshots are heard from within. At this point the scene changes.

SCENE XIII
The seashore, as in Act One. Gunshots are heard from the ruins and the cliffs. The stage is crowded with villagers rushing to the sea with weapons. The noise gradually dies down, and fisherfolk, men and women, enter jubilant and happy.

Chorus
Victory! Victory!
They are beaten, they are arrested!
They defended themselves
Like real demons…
But they threw down their arms…
There they are tied up…
At last his island
Will be safe.

SCENE XIV
Don Ramiro with the constables from one side, Don Meschino from the other; then Serafina, Lisetta, Don Alvaro, etc.

Meschino
Don Ramiro…come here…
There is some more trouble…
Chiara has vanished.

Ramiro
What do you mean?
When I ran to the marina
After the pirates
I left her with Serafina…

Meschino
She was there…but in all the confusion and commotion
Who knows where she disappeared to?…Maybe she too
Was killed in the battle,
Or fell into the hands of other pirates.

Ramiro
O what a disaster!
Can it be true, Serafina?

Serafina
Ah, yes…all our searching
Has been futile so far…We haven’t found
Any trace of her.

Alvaro
Oh, Chiara, where are you?

SCENE XV, the Last
Chiara and Picaro appear from the ruins behind the sarcophagus.

Chiara
Chiara is here.

Alvaro
Daughter!

Serafina
Sister!

Ramiro
Oh, joy!

Meschino
Back in those dens?

Chiara
I forgot the precious proofs
Of your innocence there:
To retrieve them
I went down to that horrid place
Again with Picaro.
Luck was with me, and I hand them to you.
Take them, Father; at last you may
Reveal your great name.
Your native land will once more
See you honored and happy.
Vengeance will fall
Upon your base slanderer.

Alvaro and Serafina
Oh, happiness!

Ramiro
O noble heart!

Meschino, Lisetta, and Chorus
He’s actually an imp.

Alvaro
Don Fernando…

Ramiro
The traitor…
Is already in fetters…

All
He shall die!

Chiara
(to Picaro)
You who have now returned
To the path of honor,
Have no fear for yourself
On such a splendid day.

All with Chiara
You will have from us
Ample reward for your good heart.

Picaro
Thankful for such generosity,
I swear eternal loyalty.

Chiara
No more dangers,
No more fears;
From now on our hearts
Will breathe.
Our pain has changed
Into enduring joy.

Chiara, joined by All
All my hopes
Have been fulfilled
At last the sky
Shines clear and bright.

Chorus
Our pain has changed
Into enduring joy.

THE END
