La zingara (1822)

The More I learn, the Less I Know

La zingara (1822)

Melodrama Semiserio in 2 Acts
Libretto by Andrea Leone Tottola

An audio recording with compressed dialogue, unfortunately marred by loud stage noises. A production of the CMD Grand Opera Company of Barcelona, conducted by Joana Filipe Martinez.. Not to be confused with the song “La Zingara,” of which there are several versions on YouTube.

ATTO PRIMO

Trionfi fastosa
Nel centro la rosa;
Le cifre a due lati…
Che flemma! Oh, scempiati!
Ben presto il lavoro
Si de’ terminar.
E in giorno sì lieto
Ogni alma giuliva
Far deve gli evviva
All’Etra echeggiar!

Ranuccio
(ad Ines)
Al piacer, che spira intorno,
Deh, risponda il tuo contento:
Ah! per te più bel momento
Forse appresta il nume Amor.

Ines
Sarò lieta, se ti piace,
Ma di amor non favellarmi:
Io serbar vo’ quella pace,
Che gustai tranquilla ognor.

Ranuccio
Paga appien ti bramo, o figlia.

Ines
(Ma non già col mio tesoro!)

Ranuccio
Il tuo ben se ti consiglia,
Non opporti al genitor.

Ines
Ad amar chi mi consiglia
Guerra intima a questo cor.

Ranuccio
Ad ubbidirmi
La figlia apprenda;
A’ miei voleri
Pronta si arrenda,
O attenda il fulmine
Del mio furor.

Ines
Come all’istante
Ti sei cangiato!
Deh, calma l’ira
O padre amato,
Ines non merita
Tanto rigor.

Antonio
(dalla porta di prospetto con Amelia)
Il Duca di Alziras
Spedito ha un espresso.

Amelia
E come ha promesso,
Il nostro castello
Quest’oggi egli stesso
Con nobil corteggio
Verrà ad onorar.

Ranuccio
Che venga, l’attendo
Con sommo piacere.
(Mie furie! v’intendo,
Nel sen voi fremete?
Sì, paghe sarete,
Quell’empio cadrà.)

Ines
(Quest’alma dolente,
Confusa, smarrita,
Più gioia non sente,
Più pace non ha.)

Amelia, Antonio e Coro
Che feste! che spasso!
Che bell’allegria!
Fra i brindisi, e ’l chiasso
Brillar si dovrà.

Ranuccio
Oh, qual giorno felice è a noi serbato o miei cari!

caro e leale Antonio. Oh, quanto anelo i momenti per darti prova fino a qual segno ti ama Ranuccio! Vieni, mi fa d’uopo parlarti.

Antonio
Pendo da’ cenni tuoi.

Ranuccio
(Ines rientra in te stessa, e se ti cale l’amor del padre, disponiti a rispettarne i voleri.)
(esce con Antonio)

Ines
E si può comandar sugli affetti? Può darsi legge ad
amore?

Amelia
Ines? Che avete? Siete questa mattina accigliata oltre
il solito?

Ines

Ines
Come sconosciuto, se io lo conosco benissimo?

Amelia
E chi è egli?

Ines
È Fernando.

Amelia
E poi?

Ines
E null’altro. Non basta?

Amelia

Amelia
Oh! oh! come vi siete sviluppata in un momento!

Ines
Amelia! Non renderti tanto importuna.
(via)

Amelia
Oh, povera me! Costei farà trovarmi in qualche tristo cimento.

zingari.

Argilla
Donzelle! A penetrar
L’arcan del vostro cor;
Zerbini! A disvelar
Se fido è il vostro amor;
Quel fervido desir,
Che sospirar vi fa,
Oh, vedove! A scovrir
Con tutta libertà;
La zingara famosa,
Argilla la indovina:
La donna portentosa
Per voi venuta è qua.
Discende in tutt’i cori
Lo sguardo mio sicuro;
E il velo del futuro,
Ombre per me non ha,
Mariti!… avvicinatevi,
È il labbro mio discreto;
Sol vi dirò in segreto
La vostra infedeltà.
Mogli! Non dubitate,
Io ben conosco il mondo;

SCENA TERZA
Papaccione dagli appartamenti ed Argilla in ascolto.

Papaccione
«Quid est homo sine foemina?»
’No scolaro maliziuso
A lo masto addimmannò.
E raspannose il caruso
Così il masto si spiegò.
«Est carofanum sfronnato,
Maccabeum sine connimmo,
Vuzzariellum senza rimmo,
Quod non sapit cammenà.»
Lo sacc’io, che da quacc’anno
Faccio passo a la donnetta,
Non c’è cosa, che m’alletta,
Sempe friddo pe’ me fa.

Argilla
(Oh briccone! Un poco aspetta,
Che a scaldarti io sono qua.)
(presentandosi)
Mio grazioso grassottello!
Porgi un poco a me la mano,
Volgi l’occhio ladroncello,
Ch’io ti voglio indovinar.

Papaccione
(Oh, che carne for’assisa!
Che boccon del sommo Giove!
Nuce vecchie, e nuce nove
Me potria mo’ affè scontà.)

Argilla
E così del tuo pianeta
Il destin saper non vuoi?

Papaccione
Sto bedenno sta cometa,
Che m’ha fatto sorzetà.

Argilla
Tu sei stato da ragazzo
Sempre intento al ceto basso:
Di cervel leggiero, e pazzo,
Niente studio, ognora a spasso:
Una certa Tommasina
Ti fe’ un giorno sospirar.

Papaccione
(Chesta affè ca ’nce annevina!
Col tentillo stà a parlà.)

Argilla
Quella tua cambiamonete
Seppe ordirti un brutto trucco,
E tu gonzo, e mammalucco,
Ti facesti corbellar.

Papaccione
Lassa stà le cose antiche,
Sì, sì, zingara addavero,
Quel ch’io tengo nel penziero,
Mo’ m’avrisse da spiegà.

Argilla
Io l’ho bello e indovinato:
Sei di me già innamorato,
E vorresti sul momento
La mia mano palpizzar.

Papaccione
Figlia mia, si’ ’no portento!
Viene a tata, fatte ccà.

Argilla
(Nella rete è già il babbeo,
Tutto arride al mio disegno,
Superar saprò l’impegno,
Son gran donna in verità!)

Papaccione
(No sta zingara, pe’ bacco,
Non bà appriesso alle galline,
Ma dell’uomene a dozzine
E sterminio sape fa’.)

Argilla

Argilla
La sai tutta davvero la furberia!

Papaccione

Argilla
Vogliamo dunque fare insieme all’amore?

Papaccione
Volimmo fa’ l’ammore?

Argilla
Di don Ranuccio.

Papaccione
No, de don Ciuccio, anzi ciuccissimo: ca ’mmece de farme suo maggiordomo, me tene ccà alla custodia de ste fiaveche vecchie, addò sta stipato ’no povero vecchio, e consegnato a me vita pe’ bita.

Argilla
E chi è costui?

Papaccione

Papaccione

Argilla

Papaccione
’No tesoro! ’No tesoro! Tu dice addavero? E addò stà?

Argilla

Papaccione
Oh, ’mmalora! Me faje venì a mente ’no suonno, che aggio fatto stanotte!

Argilla

Papaccione

Argilla
Di un basso?

Papaccione
Sì… pecché io sò curto de gamme, e me rincresce de saglì gradiate. Ma comme io aveva da farle ’no discurso a luongo, me sò nfeccato… e, oh, metamorforsion! Afferro ’na scala, che steva llà e saglio comme a ’no gatto, pe’ me menà apprimmo ’ncopp’a li frutte de dispensa. Ah! nò l’avesse maje fatto! Da dè ’mmalora so’ asciute tanta voce annascoste!… Lassa! Mariuolo! Ferma! Assassino! Non te móvere! Paffete!

Papaccione
E le mazzate, che aggio avute?

Argilla
Sono geroglifici, ornamenti della visione.

Papaccione
Tu qua’ geroglifice? Io pare che ancora me le sento…

Argilla

SCENA QUARTA
Antonio e detti.

Antonio
Papaccione, chiede di te don Rannuccio.

Papaccione
(Fuss’acciso tu e isso!)

Antonio
E non vieni?

Papaccione
Abbiateve, ca mo’ me faccio acconcià ’na tiella spertusata a sta zingara, e bengo a servì soccellenza.

Antonio
Egli ti vuole nel momento, presto!

Papaccione
Mo’! (Non te partì, ca mo’ me spiccio, e bolimmo quaglià.)

Argilla
(Ti attenderò, va’ pure.)

Antonio
Animo! Sollecita i tuoi passi…

Papaccione
Ma don Antò! Eccome ccà… jammoncenne. (Ora vi’! Sta’ morta co’ le castagnelle comm’è benuto ’ntiempo pe’ guastarme li fatti miei?)
(esce con Antonio)

Argilla
(via)

SCENA QUINTA
Luogo sotterraneo, ove è in prigione Sebastiano AIvarez.

Sebastiano
Breve istante di pace! A che lusinghi
Lo straziato mio cor? V’ha sulla terra
Chi geme ancora al pianto mio? Chi sente
Ancor pietà di me? Donna celeste!
Sei tu che favellasti? Ah sì… prosiegui,
Se già la pena mia rendi men grave,
A scendermi nel cor voce soave!
Se un lampo passaggier
Diè calma al mio martir,
Da me più non fuggir
Dolce speranza!
Ma che spero! Qual vana
Illusion mi alletta i sensi? È morte,
Che sol mi attende… è morte,
Che squallida, implacabile, e feroce
Minaccia i giorni miei… Figlia… nipote…
Agi… grandezze… ah, tutto
Il destin mi rapì! Solo mi resta
Di un crudele avvenir la idea funesta!
Perché non basto a frangervi
O barbare catene?
Perché la mia canizie,
Sa tollerarvi ancor?
Tiranno inesorabile!
Tu godi alle mie pene?
Ma trema! A prò de’ miseri
V’è un Dio vendicator.
Ohimè! già oppressa è l’anima,
Già langue il mio vigor!…
Tu, cielo, a queste lagrime,
Figlie del mio dolore,
Disarma il tuo rigore,
Abbi pietà di me!

Papaccione
Aggio paura ca sta diligenzia non me fa fa’ ’na carrera sforzata pe’ l’auto munno.

Argilla
(Eccolo!) Ma chi è colui?

Papaccione
Lo prigioniero! Che t’aggio ditto.

Argilla
Dorme?

Papaccione
O dorme, o lo poverommo starà penzanno a li guaje suoje.

Argilla
Che miro! Oh, qual portento!

Papaccione
Qua striscia? Chelle so’ felinie, che scenneno dalla soffitta.

Papaccione
Addò vaje? Vi’ ca chillo non magna carne da ’no secolo, e cò ’no muorzo te potria scippà moza varva.

Argilla
Fermati qui, ti replico, e lascia fare a me.
(si avvicina a Sebastiano)

Papaccione

Papaccione
E bide de te spiccià, ca a me li vierme già me stanno concertanno ’ncuorpo ’no ballo serio, grottesco, anacreontico.

Argilla
(Coraggio, don Sebastiano!

Papaccione
Gnò! Vi’ comme fanno bello! Buono signò! La zingara s’è posta d’accordo cò Mercurio.

Argilla
(Addio, restate lieto, ch’io vado a tutto intraprendere per
voi.)

Sebastiano
(Basta questa sola promessa a far cessare i miei lunghi tormenti.)

Argilla
Andiamo Papaccione.

Papaccione
Te se’ spicciata? Aje appurato niente?

Argilla
Tutto… andiamo ti dico.

Papaccione
E lo tesoro sta ccà dinto?

Argilla
Ci sta, e non ci sta… vieni meco, e saprai tutto…

Papaccione
E pecché chella focosa astregnetora? Dimme la verità, te tirassero simpatia porzì l’ottagenarie?

Argilla
Oh, quante domande inutili!

Sebastiano
E fia vero? Saranno infranti i miei ceppi? Oh, mia liberatrice!

Argilla.

Fernando
A te nell’appressarmi,
Soggiorno del mio ben,
Già tutto divamparmi
Io sento il core in sen!
Se vagheggiar mi è dato
Le amate sue pupille,
Appieno avventurato,
Sarò felice appien.

Sguiglio
Signò, non v’azzardate,
Signò, non ve nfeccate;
Eppure trica, trica,
E ne’ abbuscammo affè!

Argilla
Coraggio don Fernando!
(presentandosi)
Amor vi guida in porto…
Vada la tema in bando,
È il ciel per voi seren.

Fernando
Che ascolto! E voi chi siete?

Sguiglio
(Simmo scopierte a ramma!)

Fernando
Il nome mio sapete?

Sguiglio
(Auzammo mo’ la gamma,
Si no so’ guaje, messè!)

Argilla
Son la consolatrice
De’ cori innamorati:
Son l’araba fenice
Ne’ casi disperati:
Risorge a nuova vita
Ogni amator per me.

Sguiglio
Ripara quanno è chesso
Pe’ mme ’no caso brutto:
Nel mio verzillo asciutto
La ’mbrumma fa cadè.

Fernando
Deh, taci!

Argilla
A un vile Sguiglio
Tempo pensar non è.

Sguiglio
Porzì sa il nome mio?

Fernando
Oh ciel! Che mai degg’io,
Donna, pensar di te?

Argilla
Un essere pietoso,
Un genio in me tu miri,
Che a crudi tuoi martiri
Qui venne a dar mercé.

Fernando
(Costei mi sorprende! confuso mi rende!…
Fidarmi non deggio, se dubito è peggio…
Nel fiero conflitto di speme e timore
Il povero core la calma perdè!)

Sguiglio
Chill’uocchio ’mmalora! li core affattora…
Ca Sguiglio è sguigliato, cchiù dubbio non nc’è!)

Argilla
(L’amico è smarrito, il servo è stordito.
Sta l’un sospettoso, è l’altro dubbioso…
Grazioso è l’istante, mi alletta, mi piace,

Fernando
Dilegua i miei dubbi, o donna, e dimmi…

Argilla

Sguiglio
Ah! vuje site la siè Petronilla?

Fernando
Oh, sorprendente indovina! Ed il vostro sapere è tale…

Argilla
Che niente a me resta celato.

Sguiglio

Fernando
E tu mi conosci?…

Argilla
Quanto me stessa.

Sguiglio
Saje porzì la bella Icchese? E a me pecché me canusce?

Argilla

Fernando
Oh, me felice!

Volete altro?

Fernando
Ah! tu mi rendi beato!

Sguiglio
E mentre lo padrone se spassa co’ Icchese, nuje facimmo ’nziemo ’na zeta, facennoce ’na sciasciata amorosa: ca a me sempe li zingare me so’ trasute.

Argilla

SCENA OTTAVA
Don Ranuccio ed Antonio dal castello. Argilla in ascolto.

Ranuccio
Qui, in questo luogo potremo favellare liberamente, e senza destar sospetto ne’ miei domestici.

Antonio
Parlate pure: la mia fedeltà vi dovrebbe esser nota.

Ranuccio
vive a tutti ignoto.

Antonio

regno.

Antonio
Intesi ciò a dire.

Ranuccio

Antonio
Alla mia mano? E come?

Ranuccio
Ecco un pugnal… su… celalo…
Giunge l’amico istante,
Vicina è già la vittima
Serbata al mio furor.
Allor che del silenzio
Spande la notte il velo,
Scagliati a lui, sorprendilo
Nel primo suo sopor.
Aprili il petto, ed avido
Cerca quell’empio cor…
A brano a bran poi strappalo,
O mio vendicator!
Ad animarti il braccio
Avrai l’averno istesso,
Che alimentò represso
L’antico mio livor.

Antonio resta dubbioso.

Ma tu vacilli! Ah, debole!
Palpiti dubbio ancor?
E ben quel ferro rendimi…
Rinunzia alla tua sorte…
D’Ines mai più consorte…
Di me… va’! Non sei degno…
Non manca al mio disegno
Più ardito esecutor.

Si sentono voci di pastori da lontano.

Voci
Il Duca! Evviva! Evviva!

Ranuccio
Quai voci?

Voci
(come sopra)
Oh, qual favore!
Di così grande onore
Esulti ogni pastor.

Ranuccio
Ah, vile! Ah, iniquo Antonio!

Antonio
(risoluto)
Vile non son… mi avrai
Fido a’ tuoi cenni.

Ranuccio
Abbracciami!
(con tutta l’espressione del piacere)
Sarai felice appieno:
Tutte le sue delizie
Già ti prepara amor.
Piacer della vendetta!
Tu scendi già in quest’alma!
Raggio d’amica calma

Argilla
Che intesi! Ah, mostro! E di tanti delitti puoi esser tu capace? Trema! Il cielo ha qui mandato Argilla a render vani i tuoi infami disegni.
(entra nel castello)

SCENA NONA
Interno del castello come prima. Ines ed Amelia: poi Fernando e Sguiglio in osservazione; indi Argilla, in fine Papaccione.

Amelia

Ines
Sei pur meco crudele!

Fernando
(ad Argilla che arriva)
(Argilla! Ah vieni… Ines è là colla sua rigida custode.)

Argilla
(Celatevi, e siate pronto a comparire al primo mio cenno.)
(Si ritirano.)
Salute, e prosperità a questa coppia gentile.
(presentandosi ad Ines ed Amelia)

Amelia
Oh, lasciaci pure in pace!

Ines
No Argilla, vieni anzi. Mi promettesti ieri d’indovinare i miei
casi.

Amelia
Oh via! Guastarvi il cervello,
Dando ascolto a chimere!

Argilla

Ines
Oh, cielo! Amelia! Essa sa tutto!

Amelia
Vedi dunque, Argilla, anche la mia mano. (Costei mi sorprende!)

Ines
Lascia finire a me…

Argilla
Aspettate, dopo ritornerò a voi.

Amelia
Amelia vuoi tu dire?

Sguiglio
Gnorzì, chesta è essa.

Argilla
(Allegro Papaccione! Gran cose, grandi scoverte!)

Papaccione
(Ne? E fammelle sentì, consolame sto core.)

Amelia
Chi sei tu?

Sguiglio
Il primo paggio de lo Duca Zisso…

Amelia
Del Duca di Alziras! E cosa vuoi da me?

Sguiglio

Amelia
Che so io di alloggi? Dirigiti a chi ne ha
l’incombenza.

Sguiglio
Mo’! E sta mala grazia comme c’entra? Me parite ’na luna ’nquintadecima, e non bolite fa’ ’no poco de luce a ’no poverommo che bedenno i vostri arraggiati riflessi s’ha ’ntiso tutte ’nzieme pe’ buie ah! ’Na magliata a lo core?

Amelia
Mancava quest’altro matto a darmi molestia!

Sguiglio
(E bi’ si se spicciano? E ’nfratanto tenimmo sta mula ’nquatto!)

Ines
(Ah! Come sul mattin
A primi rai del sol
Spiegando l’usignol
Con flebili concenti
Va l’innocente ardor,
Ora che a te vicin
Mi veggo, o caro ben,
Tutte narrarti appien
Vorrei con brevi accenti
Le pene del mio cor.
Ma così bei contenti
Non mi concede amor.)

Fernando
(Pace non so trovar,
Cara, lontan da te.
Tutto è languore in me,
Splendor non han le stelle.
Natura è a me d’orror.
Ma il crudo mio penar
Già cangiasi in piacer,
Ora che il nume arcier
Alle tue luci belle
Nuovo mi dà vigor.
Ahi! In quelle tue fiammelle
Struggermi io bramo ognor!)

Argilla
Quando il gufo a mezza notte
Canterà colla civetta,
Io sollecita, e soletta
La tua porta busserò.
Ticche, tocche, ticche, to…
Zitto, e pian mi seguirai,
E in quel pozzo scenderai,
Che indicarti io ben saprò.
I custodi del tesoro,
Belzebucco ed Astarotte,
Di lasciarti pria quell’oro
Ti daran delle gran botte,
Papaccion, niente paura!
Brutti mostri appariranno,
Sfingi, scimie, ombre, giganti,
De’ gran turchi con turbanti…
Papaccion, niente paura!
Col coraggio e la bravura,
Sol puoi ricco diventar.

Papaccione
Quanno sento il gran duetto
Tra lo gufo, e la cevetta,
Io me metto a la veletta,
E il rilorgio sentarò…
Nti, nti, nti, nti, nti, nti, ntò.
Sona appena mezza notte,
Tu me chiamme, e nquatto botte
Dinto al puzzo scennarrò.
Comm’a ladro de campagna,
Che dà ’ncuollo a li viannante,
Assaccheo chella cuccagne,
Piglio argiento, oro, e brillante,
Zingarè, m’aggio paura:
Pe’ Astarotte e Barnabucco
Stanno ccà le spalle meje.
Non sò tanto mammalucco,
Signornò, ’n’aggio paura,
Lo coraggio, e la bravura
Schitto ricco me pò fa’.

Sguiglio
E botame ’nfaccia
Chill’uocchie siè Amè!
Ca voglio sta caccia
Stirparme pe’ me.

Amelia
Più smorfie non farmi,
Sei matto? Va’ là!
Un nano di amarmi
Ardir non avrà.

Sguiglio
Diceva si Ciommo,
Lo dotto, e saputo,
A parme dell’ommo
Mesura non fa.
Si tratte ’no poco
Chi è sto nennillo,
Ca sò peccerillo
Te faccio scordà.

Amelia
Io mai con ragazzi
Il tempo ho perduto;

Ah! malandrina!
Ah, zingara briccona!
Così mi si canzona?
E tu giovane ardito
Se qui più inoltri il piede,
Vedrai cosa succede,
Qual danno ti avverrà.

Ines e Fernando
Di un’alma innamorata,
Amelia mia, pietà!

Sguiglio
Finiscela sta ja ja,
Non bì ca so’ picciune?
Me pare affè ’na groja,
’n’arma de baccalà!

Amelia
Mi soffoga la rabbia,
Mi assale il tristo umore,
Partite, allontanatevi,
O adesso io do in furore,
E allora la commedia
Tragica finirà.

Ines e Fernando
Se il fato inesorabile
Si oppone al nostro amore,
Mia bella fiamma, ah! serbami
Il tuo costante ardore;
La morte sol dividere
Il nostro cor potrà.

Argilla
(Fidate nella zingara,
Fidate nel mio core,
Non mancheranno astuzie
All’alto mio valore,
Sì, questo ingegno fervido
Vittoria canterà.)

Sguiglio
(a Fernando)
E priesto mo’ finiscela!
E scumpela, signore!

Coro
Feste, gioie, delizie, piaceri…
Cacce, pranzi, spumanti, bicchieri…
Serva tutto a mostrar qual contento
In noi desti sì lieto momento,
Come ogni alma festiva, baccante
Sia superba di tanto favor!

Duca
Basta, o amici; ah, troppo grati
Sono a me quei cari accenti!
Quai soavi, e bei momenti
Fa gustarmi il vostro amor!
Se mi accoglie in queste mura
Amistà leale, e pura,
Sarò lieto in fra i piaceri
Che mi appresta il suo candor.

Ranuccio
Sì, ti accoglie in queste mura
Di amistade il bel candor.

Coro
Amistà leale, e pura!
Sei la gioia di ogni cor.

Papaccione
(con caricatura)
Papaccione Cincorenza,
Che i doveri non attrassa,
Al magnifico eccellenza
Or s’inchina, e ’l capo abbassa,
E ad un uom sì diffamato
Viene il maggio a presentà.
A te in faccia il sole è un zero
È la luna una ciantella;
Sei dell’orbico emisfero
La lucerna, anzi la stella:
È il tuo core un mappamondo,
Quella bocca un campo Eliso,
Sei bislungo, anzi rotondo,
Sei più bel del grande acciso;
Che… cioè… ma mi confondo…
Di più dir non son capace…
Al silenzio mio loquace
Supplirà la tua bontà.

Coro
Ah! ah! ah!

Duca
Grazioso in vero.

Antonio
Compatite, è tutto solo.

Papaccione
(Del sublime mio pensiero
Stanno il merto ad ammirà!)

Argilla
Se un cor magnanimo tu chiudi in petto,
Dell’umil zingara soffri l’aspetto,
Che lieti annunzi t’offre, o signor.
La gioia, il giubilo ti sieda allato,
Gli astri benefici, oltre l’usato,
Per te scintillino di alto splendor.

Ghita e Manuelitta
Gli astri benefici…

Duca
Gli auguri accetto, donna gentile,
E ti prometto il mio favor.

Papaccione
(Ma vi’ sta zingara, comme se ’nficca!
Che mutria celebre! Che franco umor!)

Ranuccio
Là sulle stanze andiamo,
Siegui i miei passi, amico.

Duca
Guidami a tuo piacere:
Son tuo seguace ognor.
Accresca il mio contento
La rimembranza amica
Dell’amicizia antica,
Che strinse il nostro cor.

Ranuccio
(Oh trista rimembranza!
I torti miei rammento,
E frenar posso a stento
L’ascoso mio furor.)

Argilla
(L’alma perversa, e ria
Medita un tradimento;
La vigilanza mia
Farà svanirlo or or.)

Antonio
(La trista rimembranza
Più i torti suoi rammenta,
Mentre amistade ostenta
Più pasce il suo livor.)

Papaccione
(Me pareno mille anne,
Che notte va scuranno,
Che doppie, atta d’aguanno!
Saraggio un gran signor.)

Ghita, Manuelitta e Coro
Per voi risplenda il sole
Sgombro da nembo, o velo;
Benigni influssi il cielo
A voi conceda ancor.
Di lieti flauti al suono,
Nel brio di sì bel giorno
Gioia respiri intorno,
Lungi tristezza, orror.

Tutto il corteggio si avvia agli appartamenti.

Si cala il sipario.

ATTO SECONDO

Fernando
Che sarà mai? Né tu hai potuto investigarne l’oggetto?

Sguiglio
Qua’ veste de cammera, e loggetta me jate contanno? Pe’ dirle schitto, zingarè? Dillo a me ca io e lo patrone simmo una cosa, m’ha sonato ’no scozzetto accosì secante, che m’ha fatto vedè la luna dinto a lo puzzo.

Fernando

Sguiglio
Addò ’mmalora la trovo? Chella squaglia comme a Sautanasso; e po’ non me voglio fa’ vedè girà tanto dinto a sto castiello… io songo ’na figura… benedica!…

SCENA SECONDA
Fernando, indi Ines.

Fernando
Ines! Ines! Ah! tu sola fai obbliarmi il mio periglio.

Ines
Che sia egli partito senza più rivedermi?

Fernando
Oh! stelle! E non è quella Ines?

Ines
Eccolo! È qui il mio Fernando…

Fernando
Qual fato benefico guida i tuoi passi in questo solitario recinto?

Ines

Fernando…

Ines
Tu sei dunque degno di me?

Fernando
(Che dissi! Imprudente!)

Ines

Fernando
Lascia, che io taccia, e miglior tempo attendi.

Ines
Va’ ingrato! Va’! Temi di me? Non sai,
Che arcani amor non ha?

Fernando
Legge crudele
Il mio silenzio impone.

Ines
Ah! no, non mi ami,
E mi lusinga il tuo fallace inganno.

Fernando
(Hai più angosce per me, fato tiranno?)
Un mentitor mi credi?
Puoi dubitar di me?
Aprimi il core, e vedi
Se pura è la mia fé.

Ines
Pensa, che i giorni miei
Serbai finor per te:
Che di dolor morrei
Priva di tua mercé.

Fernando
Un dubbio tal mi offende…

Ines
Narra le tue vicende.

Fernando
Per or nol posso… in breve tutto saprai: tel giura il labbro
mio…

Ines
Sicura dunque sarò? Né temo
Esser da te tradita?

Fernando
Qual tema? Ah no… mia vita!
Mirar quei vaghi rai,
Ed esser mancatore
Possibil non è.

Ines
Perdona, io ti oltraggiai,
Ma colpa fu di Amore,
Che dubitar mi fe’.

Ines e Fernando
S’è ver, che in ciel si formano
I tuoi legami, o Imene,
Eterne, indissolubili
Tu rendi le catene,
Che i nostri cori avvinsero,
Che strinse il nume arcier!

Ines
Addio!

Fernando
Va’ pur, mia cara…
Ti affida e non temer.

Ines e Fernando
Affetti! ah, voi, che a gara
Quest’anima straziate,
L’istante non turbate
Di un rapido piacer!
(via Ines)

SCENA TERZA
Fernando, indi Argilla dal cancello.

Fernando
In quale imprudenza mi trasportava uno slancio inconsiderato!

Argilla
Don Fernando?

Fernando
Argilla, che hai tu da dirmi?

Argilla

Argilla
No.

Sguiglio
No? E aje fatto assaje!

Argilla

Papaccione
Siente, quacche bota aggio dubitato d’essere ommo a quatto piede, ma maje aggio pensato d’avè le scelle; e pecchesto me ne sò ghiuto sempe terra terra, ne me sò partute maje da corpiette e gonnelle.

Argilla
Sbrigati, che siamo già a tiro.

Papaccione
Mo’…

Argilla
(Oh! Quelle chiavi saranno fra poco in poter mio.)

Papaccione

Argilla
Hai fatto benissimo: vedi tu queste due doppie?

Argilla
A ciò penserai dopo: orsù discendi nella cisterna: l’ora è già tarda…

Papaccione

Argilla
E come potresti altrimenti impossessarti del tesoro?

Papaccione

Argilla
Tu sei un originale! Va’… scendi… e non perdere più
tempo.

Papaccione
Ma pecché non scennimmo ’nziemo?

Argilla
Ed a che fare?

Papaccione
Tu tenarrisse ’ncampana a li mammune, e io farria l’arravoglia cuosemo.

Argilla

Coro
Scendi, scendi Papaccion
Tanto caro al dio Pluton!
Di monete un milion
Generoso ei ti offre in don:
Scendi, scendi Papaccion,
Tanto caro al dio Pluton.

Papaccione
(Ajemmè! Che brutte vuce in bautta!)

Argilla
Sei contento? Avrai ora più ritegno di scendere?

Papaccione

Argilla
Quante scuse! Quanti pretesti! Or ora mi fai perdere la
pazienza!

Papaccione
Mo’! Aspetta, e bì che pressa!
Scenno, gnorsì, bel bello!
Ma all’infernal drapello,
Primma che me presento,
Vorria ’no complimento
Cottíco combinà.

Argilla
Poltrone! Ogni momento
Caro ti costerà.

Papaccione
Si vada quanno è chesto…
Gnernò! Non è paura…
Ma è un venticello infesto,
’Na meza tramontana,
Che lesta ’na terzana
M’ha fatto mo’ scetà.
Addio: di doppie o cara
Portà te voglio un carro…
Neh? Dimme, ’no catarro
Ce potarría piglià?…

Argilla
Orsù men vo… tu resta…

Papaccione
Ah no mio ben, ti arresta!
Mo’ scenno… eccome ccà!

Un’altra vampa dalla cisterna.

Misericordia! Ajemmè!
Sta vampa de che sa?

Argilla
Sdegnato si è Plutone,
Il devi or tu pregar.

Papaccione
Gnernò… lui m’è patrone…
Mo’ veo de lo placà…
Per quei magnifici
Raggi frontiferi,
Che di Proserpina
Fur doni egregi,
Plutone! ah, placati
Per carità!
Se di olocausti
Hai desiderio,
Offro sta zingara,
Sto bello intingolo
Alla tua cognita
Golosità.

Coro
(come sopra)
Là fra tartarei
Chiostri, terribili
Penetrò rapida
Tua voce supplice:
Pluto dimentica
Le andate ingiurie,
E la sua grazia
Ti sa tornar.
Ma ogni altro indugio
Lo fa sdegnar.

Argilla
Orsù risolviti.

Papaccione
’N’aggio timore…
’N’eroe divento… animo, e core!
(Ma vi’ ste gamme comme so’ toste,
Che sempre arreto vonno cessà!)

Sguiglio
(dalla cisterna)
Scendi.

Papaccione
Chi parla?

Argilla
È un diavoletto…

Sguiglio e Servi
Scendi…

Papaccione
Mo’ vengo…

Sguiglio
Presto.

Papaccione
Sò ccà…
Ma vi’ sto spireto comm’è afflittivo!
Ma vi’ che susta me stace a ddà!
Addio… mia bella! Si torno vivo
Maje cchiù co’ spirete voglio trattà!
Dà ccà lo parpeto m’arresta, e azzoppa,
Llà co’ le ddoppie vorria fa’ toppa,
E in così barbaro conflitto isterico
Chi me consiglia che aggio da fa’?
(scende nella cisterna)

Argilla
Pietoso cielo! Deh, tu guida i miei passi.
(apre la porta ferrata ed entra sollecitamente)

Papaccione

Sguiglio
(con voce finta)
Rompiti il collo! All’inferno!

Papaccione
Misericordia! Ca chiste me carreano a casa cauda!

Sguiglio

SCENA SESTA
Argilla conduce fuori don Sebastiano, indi Papaccione dalla cisterna, poi Ranuccio ed Antonio, Fernando in osservazione.

Sebastiano
Oh! Mia liberatrice! E qual ricompensa?

Argilla
Zitto! Compagni! L’affido a voi!

Sguiglio
Siè Argì? L’amico sta llà bascio facenno le ppese… Io torno da lo patrone.

Argilla
No…

Sguiglio
’Nzomma tu aje pigliato a forza de mira a sto a povero cuorio mio?

Papaccione
M’hai fatto chesto, zingara ’mmalorata.

Argilla
Papaccione, torna su…

Sguiglio
’Mmalora! E comme n’ha trovata la strata?

Argilla
Ci siamo intesi… io mi nascondo.
(va dov’è celato Fernando)

Sguiglio
A nomme de spate ’ncuorpo!
(esce)

Papaccione arrampicandosi e tremando giunge sopra della cisterna.

Papaccione
Mo’ moro! Chi m’ajuta a bottà le gamme? Io sò bivo, e no lo credo! Ma che diavolo manische! E comme so’ brutte le scoppole infernali! Quanta catene! Quanto rommore! Po’ tutto ’nziemo li spirite se ne so’ ghiute, e io pe’ ’no portiento aggio trovata la gradiata pe’ me mettere ’nsarvo!
Oh! maro me! La porta è aperta? Ah, quacch’auto guajo cchiù gruosso me sta stipato!

Antonio
Ah! non giova arrestarsi a mezzo il corso: attendimi;
fra pochi altri istanti tu sarai vendicato, ed Ines saprà rendermi felice.
(s’inoltra nella porta medesima, ove è entrato Fernando)

Argilla
(Nume di bontà! Deh, tu proteggi la mia intrapresa!)
(esce per lo cancello)

Ranuccio
Si è finalmente risoluto! Oh! quanto io temea, ch’egli fosse tuttora restio a’ miei voleri!

Sguiglio
Gnernò, io veneva a trovà a buje…

Argilla

Ranuccio
(Chi veggo! Alvarez!)

Papaccione
(È tornato! Oh, che galantommo!)

Sebastiano
(al Duca)
Amico, ah! stendimi le tue braccia.

Ranuccio
Che mi succede! Oh, colpo!
Io fui tradito!

Duca
(stentando a riconoscerlo)
Ah, parmi!…

Sebastiano
Non sai tu ravvisarmi?

Duca
Alvarez! Non m’inganno.
Oh, qual ti miro!

Ranuccio
(Ohimè!)

Papaccione
(Ajemmè!)

Ranuccio
(Oh, come a danni miei
Par che congiuri il fato!
Lena e vigor perdei…
Coraggio io più non ho!)

Duca
(Oh quante un solo istante
Strane vicende aduna!
Incerto, e palpitante,
Che immaginar non so!)

Amelia
(Oh quante un solo istante
Strane vicende aduna!
Incerta, e palpitante,
Che immaginar non so!)

Argilla e Sebastiano
(In quel pallor l’indegno
Palesa il fier conflitto,
Che il grave suo delitto
Nel sen già gli destò!)

Papaccione
(Oh! carne prelibbate!
Ciacèlle sbenturate!
De vuje mo’ don Ranuccio
Ne fa ’no fricandò!)

Sguiglio
(Ebbiva la siè Argilla!
Se ’mpizzi comme anguilla!
Vedimmo sta facenna
Comme se sbroglia mo’!)

Duca
(a Sebastiano)
Ma come qui sei?

Sebastiano
(indicando Papaccione)
Tel dica costui…

Duca
Tu dunque…

Argilla
Colui
Parlare non può.
Per ora il silenzio
Succeda al rumore:
Che tutto, signore,
Svelarti saprò.

Ranuccio
(Ah! straziami il petto
Furor, e dispetto!
Da palpiti oppressa
Confusa, avvilita
Quest’alma smarrita
Consiglio non ha!)

Argilla e Sebastiano
(Gli straziano il petto
Timore e dispetto:
Da palpiti oppressa
Confusa, avvilita,
Quell’alma smarrita
Consiglio non ha!)

Gli altri
(Mi desta ogni oggetto
Un forte sospetto!
Da palpiti oppressa,
Dubbiosa, avvilita,
Quest’alma smarrita
Consiglio non ha!)
Viano per diverse parti.

SCENA OTTAVA
Sala di armi nel castello. Ines, poi Ranuccio e Papaccione.

Ines
E a quale oggetto?

Ranuccio
Vieni anima rea! Vieni, e dimmi in qual modo…

Papaccione
Signò! Stammoce cojeto co’ le ’mmane, e parlammo da galantuommene, comme ce ha fatte la madre natura, ca a me si se ne so’ cadute le ddeta, ce so’ restate l’anelle: de tutte l’aute debolezze n’aggio potuto fa’ passo, ma l’educazione è stata sempe la passione mia.

Ranuccio
Non bastano i tuoi raggiri a frenare l’ira che mi arde in seno!

Papaccione
’Nzagnate, pigliate ’no bicchiero de vino co’ ’no tezzone stutato dinto, che tu vuo’ fa’ venì ’na goccia?…

Ranuccio
Empio!

Papaccione
Gnorsì… ’me sò ’ngrassato mo’, che sò granneciello… ma quanno fuje bardascio, era discolo comm’a bosta accellenzia.

Ranuccio

Papaccione
A me? Me meraviglio! Io quanno aggio d’aprì ’na porta, ce

Ines
No padre, Antonio non sarà mai mio consorte.

Ranuccio
Audace! Ed osi rispondermi con tanta sfrontatezza?

Ines

Ranuccio
A Fernando? Ah! iniqua!

Ranuccio
Oh! qual eccesso! Ah! quanti! quanti siete a tradirmi!

Ines
No!… padre!

Ranuccio

Ines
Taci! Non proseguir! Freme natura
Inorridita a questi accenti! Ah! mira
A piedi tuoi la sventurata figlia!
Maledirmi, e perché?

Ranuccio
Perché tu merti
L’ira di un padre.

Ines
Ah! no… colpevol tanto
Ines non è…

Ranuccio
Sorgi… da’ sguardi miei
Involati, e per sempre, anima rea!

Ines
Qual cruda stella al nascer mio splendea!
Se fu colpa un primo affetto,
Se delitto è un casto ardore,
Perché darmi, o padre, un core
Tanto facile ad amar?
Ah, no… amato genitore!
Per pietà non ti sdegnar!
Mi sento a quel fremito,
Al torvo tuo ciglio
Colpita da un fulmine
Di vita mancar!
Oh, morte! Deh! appressami
L’adunco tuo artiglio,
Ché pene sì barbare
Non so tollerar!
Del mio non si vide
Più misero stato!
Oh, amor sventurato!
Oh, acerbo penar!
(via)

SCENA NONA
Duca di Alziras e don Sebastiano.

Sebastiano

Duca
Egli mi fuggì dallo sguardo inseguendo quel perfido.

Sebastiano
Ebbene attendimi… or ora tu lo vedrai.

Duca
Che? È egli a te noto?

Sebastiano

Eccolo! Egli già torna.

SCENA DECIMA
Sebastiano, Fernando ed il Duca di Alziras.

Sebastiano
Miralo: è il tuo germano,
È quel Fernando istesso,
Che tu volesti oppresso,
Che i giorni tuoi salvò.

Duca
(Ah! qual sorpresa è questa!
Mirarlo, oh Dio! non oso!
Ei tanto generoso
Le offese mie scordò?)

Fernando
Mai questo cor restìo
Fu di natura al grido;
E sparse ognor di obblìo
Gli oltraggi che provò.

Duca
I torti miei ravviso,
Son di perdono indegno…

Fernando
Sia questo amplesso un segno
Che mi sei caro ancor.

Sebastiano
Sia quell’amplesso un pegno
Del suo sincero amor.

Sebastiano, Duca e Fernando
È tenero il pianto,
Che il ciglio m’inonda!
Natura ne ha il vanto,
Nol preme il dolor.
E dopo il conflitto
Di fiera procella
Oh! quanto è più bella
La pace del cor!

Duca
Ma dimmi… e da qual mano
L’insidia a me fu tesa?

Fernando
Lo ignoro…
Ma non invano…

Sebastiano
Ah! sì, l’offesa…
No, Duca, io non m’inganno,
Partì dal rio tiranno,
Dal mio persecutor.

Duca
Che? Da Ranuccio? Oh, quale
Idea mi sorge in mente!
Ed invido, e fremente
Seppe dolersi un dì,
Che il mio sovran clemente
Nel primo onor di corte
A lui mi preferì.

Sebastiano
Perciò di trarti a morte
Trama fatal ti ordì.

Duca
Se laccio tal mi tese,
Paventi ormai l’indegno:
Il fulmin del mio sdegno
Sul capo suo cadrà.

Sebastiano
Ah, sì… quell’alma perfida
Sempre alla strage è intenta:
Ravvisa in me una vittima
Della sua crudeltà.

Fernando
(Perché del mio tesoro
Quel mostro è genitore?
E fra dovere, e amore,
Che far mi converrà?)

Duca
Sian grazie al ciel pietoso,
Che nel fatal periglio
Mi volse amico il ciglio,
Ebbe di me pietà.

Sebastiano e Fernando
Sian grazie al ciel pietoso,
Che nel fatal periglio
Ti volse amico il ciglio,
Ebbe di te pietà.

SCENA UNDICESIMA e Ultima
Tutti gli attori, come saranno indicati.

Ranuccio

Ranuccio
(Ohimè! Egli reprime la sua collera! Ah, son perduto!)

Ines
Sei pur qui, mio Fernando? Non sai? Il padre vuol darmi Antonio in isposo.

Ranuccio
Come! Colui Fernando?

Duca
Sì, mio fratello… riconoscetelo pure.

Ines
Egli vostro fratello?

Fernando

Duca
Oh! eccesso!

Antonio
(Oh! rossore!)

Sguiglio
(Oh! che matassa!)

Papaccione
Roba da farne tre commedie de seguito!

Ghita
Io son sorpresa.

Manuelitta
Altro che imbrogli da zingara!

Duca
Iniquo!
(a Ranuccio)

Papaccione
Sc’chitto a me m’aje fatto restà co’ ’no tesoro ’ncannavola!

Sebastiano

Amelia
Oh! qual sorpresa!

Sguiglio
E bì si pozzo trovà pur’io ’no patre cavaliero!

Argilla
Tu l’autor de’ miei giorni? Io la tua figlia?
Ah, padre! ah! cari miei! Di tanta sorte
Palpito incerta ancora!
Amica alfin per me sorse l’aurora?
E fia ver? Di sì gran dono
Fausto il ciel mi ricolmò?
Or comprendo i dolci moti,
Quei soavi affetti ignoti,
Che natura in me destò!
Deh! Mi stringi, o padre, al seno,
E il tuo cor sia lieto appieno,
Se finora sospirò!

Sebastiano
Sì ti stringo, o fìglia al seno,
E il mio cor sia lieto appieno
Se fin’ora sospirò.

Argilla
Oh! gioia inesprimibile!
Oh! mia felicità!
L’eccesso del contento
Mi tronca… oh, Dio! l’accento!
Piacere incomprensibile
L’alma beando va!
Oh! gioia inesprimibile!
Oh! mia felicità!

Sguiglio
(al Duca)
Orsù fra li contiente,
Fra abballe, e fra festine,
Vedimmo un po’ li diente,
Signò, d’esercità.

Papaccione
(ad Argilla)
Signora, mo’ sì fatta,
Pe’ me non sì cchiù cosa…
Co’ Ghita, ch’è porposa,
Mo’ veo de m’acconcià.

Gli altri
Ah! dopo il fiero nembo,
Che ha l’anima agitata,
Oh! quanto sei più grata
Dolce serenità!

Coro
Ed or che in ogni core
Pace sorride e amore,
Godiam di sì bel giorno
La bella ilarità!

FINE

ACT I

Interior of an ancient castle. Its great portal is in the center. On one side is a magnificent staircase leading to the upper appartments, and on the other ruins of Gothic architecture, on the base of which is a low iron door that gives access to a cellar.

SCENE I
The servants of Ranuccio are hastily decorating the walls of the castle with flowers and other festive objects; then Ranuccio and Ines, lastly Amelia and Antonio.

Chorus
May we be honored by the arrival
Of the illustrious guest.
Those festoons more that way…
(directing the work and urging the other servants to carry it out)
Those flowers more orderly…
Let the rose triumph
Splendidly in the center;
The embroidery on each side…
Such sloth! Oh, imbeciles!
The work must be completed
Very quickly.
And on such a happy day
Every gay soul
Should make their huzzas
Echo to the ether.

Ranuccio
(to Ines)
Oh, let your happiness respond
To the pleasure that breathes about;
Ah! Perhaps the god Cupid is preparing
Some finer moment for you.

Ines
I shall be gay, if you like,
But don’t talk to me of love.
I am going to keep that peace
That I have always enjoyed in tranquility.

Ranuccio
I wish you an ample reward, daughter.

Ines
(But not with my treasure, for sure!)

Ranuccio
If your own well-being counsels you,
Do not oppose your father.

Ines
Whoever counsels me to love
Starts a war in this heart.

Ranuccio
Let the daughter learn
To obey me;
Let her be ready to give in
To my wishes
Or expect the thunderbolts
Of my wrath.

Ines
How suddenly
You have changed!
Oh, calm your ire
O Father dear.
Ines does not deserve
Such severity.

Antonio
(from the front door with Amelia)
The Duke of Alziras
Has sent an express message.

Amelia
And has he promised
He himself will come
This very day
With his noble entourage
To honor the castle.

Ranuccio
Let him come, I await him
With the greatest pleasure.
(My furies! I hear you,
Are you trembling in my breast?
Yes, you will be paid,
That villain will die.)

Ines
(This sorrowing soul,
Lost and bewildered,
Feels joy no more,
Has no more peace.)

Amelia, Antonio and Chorus
What festivities! What fun!
What fine gaiety!
What with toasts and merriment
It is sure to be brilliant.

Ranuccio
Oh, my dears, what a happy day is in store for us! At last I shall be able to embrace again a most honorable friend, whom, notwithstanding, the heavy cares of his office, which calls him continually to court, have distanced from me for several years.

Antonio
The Duke of Alziras profits from the brief absence of his sovereign to demonstrate in returning to your arms that he has never forgotten the tender bonds of friendship that once bound him to you.

Ranuccio
Then let him be welcomed with all pomp and what is owing to so great a man.

Antonio
Everything will answer to your fastidious expectations.

Ranuccio
I cannot doubt it, if you have taken charge of it, my dear, loyal Antonio. Oh, how I yearn for the moments to prove to you to what degree Ranuccio loves you! Come, I have need to talk with you.

Antonio
I am at your command.

Ranuccio
(Ines, come to your senses, and if you return your father’s love, dispose yourself to respect his wishes.)
Exit with Antonio

Ines
And can one control one’s feelings? Can one impose laws on love?

Amelia
Ines? What’s the matter? Are you more sullen than usual this morning?

Ines
And why not, if Father insists on making me unhappy.

Amelia
By proposing Antonio’s hand perhaps?

Ines
But what do you know of that?

Amelia
He has asked me to influence you in favor of that youth.

Ines
You are wasting your time there. Aren’t you aware that my heart has already been spoken for?

Amelia
Perhaps you are still thinking about that stranger who used to charm you there in the Andalusian mountains, where, your father sent you, entrusted to my care, to be reared? It was a cursed imprudence I committed in permitting your to stroll alone in the lovely hills that surrounded our retreat! Woe to you and to me if your father had learned the fatal secret!

Ines
And when he does find out, won’t he become tyrannical?

Amelia
Come now, Miss, use judgment for once. Don’t act like such a featherbrain with me if you don’t want to ruin your life. Consider that an unknown youth can never be worthy of you.

Ines
How is he unknown if I know him perfectly well?

Amelia
And who is he?

Ines
He is Fernando.

Amelia
And?

Ines
Nothing more. Is that not enough?

Amelia
No, it’s not enough. You need to examine his antecedents, his status…

Ines
These conditions are not stamped in the codex of love.

Amelia
Oh! Oh! How you have grown wise in a moment!

Ines
Amelia! Don’t be so importunate.
Exit

Amelia
Oh, poor me! She will find me in some awful
dilemma. There is nothing to say! Love is a great ugly devil and he has made my head spin around and around, too.
(follows Ines)

SCENE II
From the door at the back, Argilla, then Ghita, Manuelitta and other Gypsies.

Argilla
Girls! To penetrate
The secret of your heart;
Suckers! To reveal
Whether your love is true;
That fervid desire
Which makes you sigh,
Oh, widows, you may reveal
With complete freedom;
The famous Gypsy,
Argilla the fortune teller:
The amazing woman
Has come here for you.
My sure glance
Sees into every heart;
And the veil of the future
Is not shaded for me.
Husbands! Step right up,
And my discreet lips
Will tell you alone in secret
Your infidelities.
Wives! Don’t hesitate,
I know the world well;
I am capable of concealing
The truth in deep oblivion.
Come quickly, gentlemen,
If you wish to know the truth,
Let it rain money,
But only gold, and in quantity.

Argilla, hurry today to make your shining talent sparkle ever more, and if the credulity of others has so far accorded you the title of famous clairvoyant, may it today, by your zealous endeavors, be deluded into respecting you as the oracle of the century. To that end, the arrival of the Duke of Alziras and the protection of the lord of the castle, who allows you to attend the festivities, affords you a huge opportunity. Come, comrades: you may freely enter. Access to all those precincts is no longer forbidden to us. What’s the matter? You look sad? Maybe you come with empty hands?

Ghita
Totally empty. A contrary wind is blowing, scattering our efforts at trickery.

Argilla
No birds to pluck?

Manuelitta
Not a bird, nor a sitting duck.

Ghita
The birds are few, and have no more feathers for us. They have learned how to evade the talons of city women, who are greedier than we are.

Manuelitta
We have only to show up in the plaza and everybody is on guard. The mommies quickly take their babies in their arms, cash boxes are locked, animals are herded away–it’s as if we’re bringing the plague everywhere.

Ghita
We’ve been around the whole village without earning enough to slake our hunger.

Argilla
Can it be! With those faces, and with all the natural born cunning you have?

Ghita
But that’s the way it is. Gypsies are little trusted, and people know all our nursery rhymes by heart.

Manuelitta
The only thing I get is an occasional measly coin from some randy local kid who uses it as a pretext for squeezing my hand.

Argilla
That’s if you want to be common Gypsies. Imitate my style, use my enterprising spirit on them, and then you will be luckier. Remember, physiognomy is the true
key to the human heart. It just takes one quick glance
to see into another’s desires and inclinations, to gain profit from the upper hand that our art affords, and to give the color of truth to the felicity of guesswork. This rapid perception is what has made my name famous by now.

Ghita
Heaven is not prodigal with its gifts to everyone.

Argilla
Get up and spread out in the castle where all the servants are busy with the imminent arrival of the Duke of Alziras, such a great friend of the master. Be able to insinuate yourselves, read their hearts, show off your talent, and thus become worthy followers of Argilla.

Manuelitta
For all your celebrity, I assure you, I would rather act the lady than the Gypsy.

Ghita
Come, sister, the first one we get our claws on, we’ll set his head spinning.

Manuelitta
Woe to him! You make with the words, I’ll bat my eyes…That’s all. our whole army of wiles will be deployed to make our good teacher happy.

They disperse into the castle.

Argilla
What fools! The complain about destiny, but not about their stupidity. But here comes Papaccione. He is head of Zappador’s servants. His friendship could gratify me not a little. I know enough about him to suffice to merit his confidence. Wait for my ambush, and his credulity will be amazed by the brilliant store of predictions I’ve thought up.

SCENE III
Papaccione from the apartments, and Argilla listening.

Papaccione
“Quid est homo sine foemina?”
One facetious pupil asked
The teacher.
And scratching his forehead
The teacher explained it so.
“He is a carnation without petals,
Pasta with no sauce,
A boat without an oar,
That is not able to move.
This I know, from lots of years
Chasing after skirts,
There’s nothing that cheers me,
I’m always out in the cold.

Argilla
(Oh, you rogue! Just you wait
Till I’m there to scald you.)
(stepping forward)
My gracious little dumpling!
Won’t you let me see your hand,
Turn your larcenous eyes to me
So I can look into your future.

Papaccione
(Oh, what a dainty piece of meat,
What a morsel fit for gods!
Old birds, and young ones
They all get my juices flowing.)

Argilla
So don’t you want to know
That your planet destines for you?

Papaccione
I’m watching this comet here,
That’s got me bewitched.

Argilla
Since you were a boy you’ve been
Always going for the lower class,
Light-headed and wild,
Never studying, always playing,
A certain Tommasina
Once made you sigh.

Papaccione
(This dame really sees things!
Her talking’s got me hooked.)

Argilla
Your little golddigger
Managed to play a mean trick on you,
And you, idiot, simpleton,
Made yourself a laughing-stock.

Papaccione
Let ancient history be,
Yes, yes, Gypsy, truly
You should reveal
What I’m thinking now.

Argilla
I’ve divined it very well:
You are surely in love with me,
And you would like to
Stroke my hand right now.

Papaccione
Oh, honey, you’re a wonder!
Come to Daddy, stick around.

Argilla
(The old fool is already in my net,
Everything smiles on my design,
I’ll be able to nail this caper,
I truly am a great lady!)

Papaccione
(There’s no Gypsy, by gum,
Who doesn’t chase after suckers,
But knows how to make
Saps out of guys by the dozen.)

Argilla
Tell me, have you finished squeezing my hand or not?

Papaccione
Eh, what’s your hurry? We are just getting to know
each other, and you already want to call it quits? There’s no way you can turn your head after how you affected me. What’s the harm in letting me enjoy the fruit for just ten seconds at least?

Argilla
You really know all the ploys.

Papaccione
I know it all, and you don’t know half multiplied by
four thousand. You cast a spell with that freezing and
petrifying eye, that has already aroused my poor heart, that’s been doing its own thing for a few years, and fluttering like a flitting bird wants to land on the top branch of this leafy tree, without bothering any other flying creatures that may be competing.

Argilla
So do we want to make love?

Papaccione
Do we want to make love? I’m already thinking about a nurse for the first and second offspring!

Argilla
It’s hard for Gypsies to fall in love for real. The need to be nomadic makes them fickle. Even so I feel a real amorous inclination to you. There is a star shining on your forehead that makes you master of all the women who come near you.

Papaccione
And what do you see in my star now? Is it eclipsed? When those round reddish things called doubloons were flowing in, my star was really shining, like a sun, and do you know how the women came running to receive the benign influxes? And because of influxes and constant fluxes and refluxes, I ended up without luster and without cash.

Argilla
Then I guessed right that it was women who led you to the edge of the cliff?

Papaccione
You don’t need to be a Gypsy to know that; every blind man and his barber know it.

Argilla
But now you are well employed?

Papccione
Are you kidding! I’m doing fine: I made rapid advances here.
As a cod merchant, which I was in Naples, so as not to be a burden to my persistent creditors, I decided on a
change of air. I had some spare savings, so I took a little sea voyage to Spain, where being obliged by my financial situation to rely on my dagger to survive, I came to the notice of Don Moronuccio.

Argilla
Of Don Ranuccio.

Papaccione
No, Don Moronuccio, Moronissimo, even; he proceeded to make me his major domo and put me in charge of these ancient dungeons, where a poor old man was being kept, and gave him to me take care of.

Argilla
And who is he?

Papaccione
Who can tell? It would break your heart to see him: I
feel such pity for the poor man, when he eats that
piece of black bread that weighs a ton and drinks
that water with worms crawling and dancing about
in it.

Argilla
(Can he be some victim of Don Ranuccio? Argilla, don’t miss
this chance to find out about such an intrigue.) Getting back to our proposal, then, tell me the truth, do you want to be my husband?

Papaccione
You want to seem crazy: look! Lady luck has come knocking at my door, and don’t you want me take her into the bedroom?

Argilla
When it’s like that, listen to me, since I’ve come to make you doubly happy. Know that the stars cannot hide their secrets from me, and for some time they have revealed to me that there is an immense treasure hidden tin this castle, which is reserved for you to possess.

Papaccione
A treasure! O you heroine of all the Gypsy tribe! A treasure! Are you telling the truth? Where is it?

Argilla
That remains for me to discover. Let me do my research and consult the stars again.

Papaccione
Oh, my goodness! I just remembered about a dream I had last night!

Argilla
Tell it to me: often great destinies are revealed in dreams.

Papaccione
Listen, I dreamed that I had an appointment to talk to the
father of a one of my godmothers, who used to iron my
laundry in Naples. I went down, and I found the basement door ajar.

Argilla
The cellar door?

Papaccione
Yes…because I have short legs and it’s hard for me to
climb stairs. But since I had a lot to say to him, I squeezed through…and, oh, what a transformation! What did I see!
The cellar was gone, and instead there was a large room
with no end; and in it were things I never expected… a
pantry full of fruit, a wine cellar, sweets all over the floor…
In sum, it was like the house of fat and plenty. I looked
around and didn’t see anyone watching all this stuff. I’m
telling the truth…The craving I had. the sight of all those
beautiful things aroused my desire… I thought I could live
on it for forty years. I bring a ladder that was standing
there and climb up like a cat to get first to the fruit pantry.
Ah! I wish I had never done it! Damn, suddenly I was hearing all these voices!…Stop! Mario! Halt! Murderer! Don’t move! Pow! All of a sudden I tumble from the top of the ladder and land on the ground…and wherever you look, it’s a free-for-all: blows, slaps, kicks, punches…and the outcome was that I was dazed, and I couldn’t see the hands and feet that were beating me, and all of a sudden a beautiful foreign woman appeared all covered in gold and lace, she lifted me off the ground and let me take whatever I wanted, and I came home loaded and with a bag full of really terrific loot.

Argilla
The dream speaks for itself. The great place is the depository of the treasure. All the many objects that met your eye are the riches and the joys that are waiting for you. The invisible guards prevented you from possessing them until a lady, who is I, arrives to make you worthy of it.

Papaccione
And the drubbings I got?

Argilla
Those are symbols, figments of your imagination.

Papaccione
What figments? I think I’m still feeling them.

Argilla
Don’t worry about the meanings. Just think about your luck…which you will have to split with me, of course.

Papaccione
Sure, like husband and wife, which we are going to be.

SCENE IV
Antonio and the above

Antonio
Papaccione, Ranuccio is sending for you.

Papaccione
(I wish both of you were murdered!)

Antonio
Aren’t you coming?

Papaccione
You go ahead, because I’m finishing up something with this gypsy, and then I’ll come to serve his excellency.

Antonio
He wants you right away, now.

Papaccione
Now! Not even sudden death is so dictatorial! (Don’t leave, because I have to run, and we want to settle.)

Argilla
(I’ll wait for you, just go ahead.)

Antonio
Step lively! Get a move on…

Papaccione
But Don Antonio! Here I am…Let’s go. (Now look! Will
you stay and keep mum, now that he’s come to ruin my
affair?)
Exit with Antonio

Argilla
On the pretext of uncovering the treasure, I’ll be able
to go down to the dungeons with Papaccione and discover who the poor man is who’s buried there…A stone seems
to have been removed from above the walled gate. But
who moves the stone of that wall? I see an arm dropping a letter. An arm! That paper! What can it be? I’ll read it. “If heaven permit this letter to be found by a friend of justice, I implore him to be moved to compassion for an ill-fated old man.
(runs to the wall and says:)
Whoever you are, rest assured that your letter is in the hands of Argilla; that she will be happy to be of service to you. I seem to have heard a pitiable voice!…I’ll go somewhere farther off to finish reading this note, and try whatever is necessary to help oppressed humanity.
Exit

SCENE V
An underground location where Sebastiano Alvarez is imprisoned. Sebastiano, elated by Argilla’s words, which he heard when throwing the letter, enters somewhat cheered.

Sebastiano
A brief moment of peace! Why do you
Deceive my tortured heart? Is there on earth
Anyone who sighs at my tears? Who still
Feels pity for me? Heavenly lady!
Is it you who spoke? Ah, yes…continue
To sound your sweet voice in my heart,
if you thus render my pain less harsh!
If a transient lightning flash
Gave calm to my torment,
Sweet hope,
Never leave me more!
But what do I hope for! What vain
Illusion lifts my spirits? It is death
Alone that awaits me…It is death
That threatens my days, horrid,
Implacable, ferocious…Daughter…Granddaughter…
Possessions…greatness…ah, Fate
Has robbed me of all! Only the grim prospect
Of a cruel future remains to me!
Oh, barbarous chains,
Why can I not break you?
How can my old age
Still tolerate you?
Inexorable tyrant!
Do you revel in my suffering?
But tremble! There is an avenging God
For the wretched.
Alas! Now my mind is oppressed,
Now my strength languishes!
O Heaven, at these tears,
Children of my grief,
Set aside your severity,
Have pity on me!
Let him who trusts only in you
Receive your favor!

Ah, yes, a heavenly ray gleams in my breast and enters to revive that hope that is always the last to desert the unfortunate. Sebastiano! Courage! Trust in heaven, bow your head to its decrees and await your fate calmly.

SCENE VI
Papaccione, Argilla, and above

Papaccione
Where are you rushing to? Tell the truth, instead of a treasure, you want to get me into hot water? If Don Zappatore finds out I’m consorting with a Gypsy tomorrow he’ll serve my head up to me on a platter.

Argilla
Imbecile! You’re with Argilla and let yourself give in to fear? Don’t you know that fortune favors the bold?

Papaccione
Oh, that’s why you have to because I have always been a yellow-belly.

Argilla
But do you or do you not want to be a Gentleman? The star of Venus gives me certain signs that make me believe that in one of these underground vaults there are hidden riches destined for you, and I, because I care about your fate, wanted to follow you to make sure of it.

Papaccione
In my opinion, this Venus has always been a dangerous character. Do you want my master, who is more infernal than Saturn, to come and stop us both like a melon caught in a net?

Argilla
Let me do my due diligence and don’t bother me any
more.

Papaccione
I’m afraid your due diligence will get me a forced career in the other world.

Argilla
(Here he is!) But who is that?

Papaccione
The prisoner! The one I told you about.

Argilla
Is he sleeping?

Papaccione
Either sleeping or thinking about his troubles, poor fellow.

Argilla
What’s this! Oh, what a portent! Do you see that patch of light glowing on his wrinkled forehead?

Papaccione
What light? That’s just plaster fallen from the ceiling. Argilla, you make a mountain out of very molehill.

Argilla
That’s right, poor man! You are not allowed the secrets of the Celestial bodies.

Papaccione
You’re on about celestial sequins, and I’m trembling that the Blue Monster will quench his thirst with my red blood.

Argilla
The splendor visible only to me shows me without doubt that that old man must be the first instrument of your fortune.

Papaccione
That one there? A instrument totally out of tune! If heaven is anything like him it won’t last two more days.

Argilla
I cannot tell you more. Wait here, and let me examine him close up.

Papaccione
Where are you going? I see that one hasn’t had meat in a century and could take off your beard with one bite.

Argilla
Stop here, I repeat, and leave things to me.
(she approaches Sebastiano)

Papaccione
She’ll come out on Proserpina’s back!

Argilla
(Don Sebastiano Alvarez?)

Sebastiano
(Ah! Who calls me? And how do you come to know the name of an unfortunate?)

Argilla
(Prudence…don’t act surprised…I am the one who picked up your note…here it is…)
(furtively shows him the paper)

Sebastiano
(Ah, yes! I recognize your voice!)

Argilla
(I took advantage of Papaccione’s state of panic as a pretext to come and assure you that I can succeed alone to get you out of this prison.)

Sebastiano
(Oh, incomparable lady! Ah, then I am not so unhappy
if heaven grants me in you the gift of a generous protector!)

Papaccione
What! Oh, no! Ruination, make her stop!

Argilla
I told you not to distract me. I’m in conference with Venus and Mercury.

Papaccione
And now we’ve botched up the deal.

Argilla
How’s that?

Papaccione
No matter how you sew this bundle of rags together, it can never be any use to needy humanity.

Argilla
Let me finish. Your ill-considered witticisms are wasting my
time.

Papaccione
And I wanted to tell you how the worms are already gathering for a serious, grotesque Anacreontic dance on my body.

Argilla
(Courage, Don Sebastiano! I’ll be down tonight to unchain
you.)

Sebastiano
(How will you be able to escape the vigilance of the others?)

Argilla
(I can’t tell you that for now. Trust me, and know that a tender daughter wold not be as solicitous for the freedom of her father as I will be in procuring your escape.)

Sebastiano
(Ah! I can’t resist these impulses that arise in me at your sweet words! Yes, like a father I press you to my bosom and hope from you alone for the liberty of which cruel violence has robbed me.)

Papaccione
Wow, look how they they get on! Good lord, the Gypsy is aligned with Mercury.

Argilla
(Farewell, be cheerful that I am going to take care of everything for you.)

Sebastiano
(This promise alone is enough to put an end to my long torment.)

Argilla
Let’s go, Papaccione.

Papaccione
You’re in a hurry? Did you find out anything?

Argilla
Everything…I said let’s go.

Papaccione
And the treasure is in there?

Argilla
It is and it isn’t…with me and you’ll know all.

Papaccione
And why this furious hocus pocus? Tell me the truth, do you sympathize with the that octogenarian?

Argilla
Oh, so many useless questions! Come up, I say again. Your business will reach it’s goal happily and you will be content.

Papaccione
I say, my dear, you must certainly be the eel of this quagmire.
Exit with Argilla

Sebastiano
Can it be true? Will my chains be broken? Oh, my liberator! Heaven, which watches over the safety of the oppressed, will support your ingenious design.
(retreats into the prison)

SCENE VII
A pleasant meadow; a view of the outside of Zappador’s castle. Fernando and Sguiglio, ligthly dressed, from the meadow, then Argilla.

Fernando
O abode of my beloved,
When I come close to you
I feel my heart all burning
Within my breast
If I may but dream of
Her beloved eyes,
Even if I risk all,
My happiness will be complete.

Sguiglio
Master, don’t take the risk
Master, don’t get mixed up in this.
Just go on riding,
And let’s get out of here.

Argilla
Courage, don Fernando!
(revealing herself)
Love guides you to port. . .
Let the enterprise begin,
And heaven smile on you.

Fernando
What do I hear? And who are you?

Sguiglio
(We’ve been found out!)

Fernando
You know my name?

Sguiglio
(Now we’ve risked life and limb,
If that’s not trouble, Sir!)

Argilla
I am the consoler
Of hearts in love:
I am the Arabian phoenix
Of desperate cases:
Arise, all you lovers,
To new life through me.

Sguiglio
So cure me, I’m such
A sorry case.
Make money fall
Into my empty purse.

Fernando
Oh, be quiet!

Argilla
This is not the time to be
Thinking about a lowly Sguiglio.

Sguiglio
How do you know my name?

Fernando
Oh, heavens! Whatever should
I think of you, my lady?

Argilla
In me you see a merciful being,
A spirit that comes here
To give solace
To your sufferings.

Fernando
(She surprises me and bewilders me!
I shouldn’t be trusting, but is it worse to doubt?
In the fierce conflict between hope and fear
My poor heart has lost its tranquility!

Sguiglio
(It’s clear what a fraud this is…
She has a voice that batters my defenses…
That evil eye that seduces my heart…
No doubt, Sguiglio has been squeezed.

Argilla
(My friend is bewildered, the servant nonplused
One is suspicious, the other doubtul . . .
I like this nice moment, it cheers me,
The poor lover is beside himself!
They don’t know that I overheard the conversation
They had at dawn in the nearby meadow.)

Fernando
Resolve my doubts, my lady, and tell me…

Argilla
Your surprise will cease when you recognize in me
The famous Gypsy, the famous Argilla.

Sguiglio
Ah! You are Madame Petronilla?

Fernando
Oh, amazing seeress! And your knowledge is such…

Argilla
That nothing remains concealed from me.

Sguiglio
How nice it is to know all the entanglements of the human race, which are not few.

Fernando
And you know who I am?

Argilla
As well as myself. You are a young lover who have come here under false pretenses to see the fair Inez.

Sguiglio
You also know fair Inez? And me, do you know who I am?

Argilla
For a young rascal full of amorous desires with no way to satisfy them.

Sguiglio
Stuff it! Don’t you know that some truths shouldn’t always be spoken of?

Fernando
Ah! If you know all, tell me, what is my dear Ines doing?

Argilla
She thinks of nothing but you. She is immersed only in memories of you.

Fernando
Oh, how happy I am! I have seen her only twice, in her country retreat.

Sguiglio
Where we were hunting–that is, this one for birds, and I for figs and grapes and other peaceful vegetation.

Argilla
And those two times were sufficient to inspire in you an inextinguishable flame?

Sguiglio
Tell me one thing…is that radiant chambermaid still with
her?

Argilla
Yes, and is her vigilant chaperone.

Sguiglia
Damn! And what a fine little filly!

Fernando
Then I will be forbidden to see her?

Argilla
And what would Argilla be if she didn’t make such a trifling thing easy for you?

Sguiglio
Here’s to you, if good for the mistress is good for the maid?

Argilla
This could actually be an opportune moment for us. They are all out of the castle attending the arrival of an honorable friend of Don Ranuccio. Go inside, stroll in the main courtyard. I will use my wiles to get your Ines to come down, and you will talk with her as much as you like. Do you wish for more?

Fernando
Ah! You make me ecstatic!

Sguiglio
And while the master is having fun with Ines, we can have a time together, doing some amorous squeezing, because I’ve always had a thing for Gypsy girls.

Argilla
I do not converse with baboons. I prefer more generous animals.

Squiglio
(Hurray for the dried-up prune!)

Argilla
Don Ranuccio and his friend leave the castle opportunely: you hide behind that hibiscus and then get inside quickly.

Fernando
And aren’t you coming?

Argilla
I will go in when I am sure that they are far enough away.
Then…

Fernando
Oh, Love! Oh, favor my ardent desire.

Sguiglio
Oh, be quiet for a little, or disaster will come down on our poor shoulders.

They hide behind the hibiscus, and as soon Don
Ranuccio and Antonio leave, they quickly enter the
castle.

SCENE VIII
Don Ranccio and Antonio from the castle, Argilla hiding.

Ranuccio
Here in this place we can speak freely, And without arousing suspicion among the servants.

Antonio
By all means speak. My loyalty should be known to you.

Ranuccio
Then know that in order to make you possessor of the immense fortune of your uncle Don Sebastiano, I caused him to be ambushed by my faithful on his return from America. I had him transported at night from my castle not far from Toledo to this manor, where he has lived for years since deep in a subterranean dungeon, unknown to all.

Antonio
Remember, though, that you promised me to respect
his life.

Ranuccio
Tell me now–what was my answer to your request for the hand of my daughter?

Antonio
That this would have to be the reward of my blind dependence on your unlimited will.

Ranuccio
Listen, then. The king was to choose from among his various subjects the most deserving for advancement to the illustrious position of minister charged with inspecting magistrates in the whole realm. The envy of some of my enemies was so detri-mental to me that the Duke of Alziras was preferred and I was thus robbed of that supreme command, to which my ambition aspired.

Antonio
I have heard that said.

Ranuccio
It was necessary then to repress my indignation; however, I swore to avenge myself at a better time, and behold now the moment has fortunately arrived.

Antonio
In what way?

Ranuccio
The duke traverses the realm in the exercise of his ministry. En route to these precincts, he has decided, as you know, to lodge for several days in my castle.

Antonio
Well, then?

Ranuccio
Well, then, it falls upon you to exact my vengeance by your hand.

Antonio
By my hand? But how?

Ranuccio looks around, cautiously brandishes a dagger, then in an emphatic tone says to Antonio:

Ranuccio
Here is a dagger…quick…hide it…
The propitious moment arrives;
The victim reserved for my fury
Is already near.
Then when night
Has spread its veil of silence,
Fall upon him, surprise him
As soon as he is asleep.
Bare his breast and avidly
Seek that impious heart…
Then hack it to pieces,
O my avenger!
To strengthen your arm
You will have Hades itself,
Which has fed my ancient
Repressed spite.

Antonio remains doubtful

But you hesitate! Ah, weakling!
You tremble with doubt still?
Fine, give back the blade…
Renounce your destiny…
No more the consort of Ines…
From me…go! You are not worthy…
My design does not lack
A more ardent executor.

Voices of shepherds are heard in the distance.

Voices
The Duke! Hurrah! Hurrah!

Ranuccio
What voices?

Voci
(as above)
Oh, what a favor!
For such a great honor
Every shepherd rejoices.

Ranuccio
Ah, coward, dishonest Antonio!

Antonio
(Resolutely)
I am not a coward… You will find me
Faithful to your commands.

Ranuccio
Embrace me!
(Expressing absolute pleasure)
You will be completely happy:
Love is already preparing for you
All his delights.
Pleasure of vengeance,
You rise now in this soul!
With your favor I hope for
A ray of friendly calm.
(Embraces Antonio and leaves with him toward the village)

Argilla
What did I just hear? Oh, the monster! And you are capable of such crimes? Tremble! Heaven has sent Argilla here to foil your infamous designs.
(enters the castle)

SCENE IX
Interior of the castle, as before. Ines and Amelia, then Fernando and Sguiglio watching, then Argilla, finally Papaccione.

Amelia
Following you, Miss, has so tired me that I can’t
stand on my legs! If feet are followed by instability of thought, one could say that you have a very twisted mind!

Ines
Go on, be mean! I had the illusion of seeing him everywhere.

Amelia
Whom do you mean?

Ines
Fernando…Fernando…Who else?

Amelia
Will you or won’t you finally stop with this cursed Fernando?

Fernando
(Look at her!…Ah! Isn’t that my Ines?)

Sguiglio
(Drat! The doe was waiting for the hunter!)

Fernando
(Ah, if only I could get her to see me!)

Sguiglio
(Ah, hush! Don’t move. Let’s wait for the Gypsy so we don’t make a mess of it.)

Amelia
Come on, let’s go back to your rooms; the Duke of Alziras is arriving right now, and maybe your father would be displeased if you stayed here.

Fernando
(What? The Duke of Alziras! My kinsman in this castle!)

Sguiglio
(Quiet, for heaven’s sake! Now for sure we are between a cannon and a sword.)

Ines
Let the Duke come. Will I also be forbidden to attend the celebration?

Fernando
(to Argilla who arrives)
(Argilla! Ah, come…Ines is there with her strict duenna.)

Argilla
(Hide yourselves and be ready to appear as soon as I signal.)
(They withdraw)
Health and prosperity to this noble couple.
(presenting herself to Ines and Amelia)

Amelia
Oh, leave us in peace!

Ines
No, Argilla, come closer. You promised me yesterday to tell my fortune.

Amelia
Oh, come on! Wasting your brain
Paying heed to chimeras!

Argilla
You are the only one who does not believe in Argilla: try it, and you will see that mine are not chimeras, but truth.

Amelia
What insanity! Foretelling the future?

Ines
I would be content for her to tell me of the past.

Argilla
Oh, that’s easy, a piece of cake.

Amelia
On the subject of the past, let’s hear if she can hit the mark.

Argilla
(to Ines)
Give me your hand. I see that you passed your childhood and adolescent years in peaceful solitude under the watchful eye of a wise woman, whose interest is only to share with you her experience and her goodness.

Amelia
Oh! You divine exactly! Her experience and her goodness. This is what I have always done for her.

Argilla
Ah! Is it you…who…

Amelia
Yours truly.

Ines
Just continue.

Argilla
I see a fine youth who appears: the love that awakens, the lover who disappears, and the desolate mountain that changes into this castle.

Ines
Oh, heavens! Amelia! She knows everything!

Amelia
Then look at my hand too, Argilla. (She surprises me!)

Ines
Let her finish with me…

Argilla
Wait, I’ll get to you afterwards.

While she takes Amelia aside to sit with her back turned to Ines, she signals to Fernando, who advances. Ines sees him and flies to him. Fernando and Sguiglio make a sign to her to be silent and stay to converse with them.

Argilla
Sit here. I need to examine your physiognomy, not your hand. That eye tells me that you have a most sensitive heart, but that you have been been ill matched to your lovers.

Amelia
Most true! Never one faithful, all ingrates and cheaters!

Sguiglio, seeing Papaccione in the distance, points him out with gestures to Argilla. She gives him a
sign to distract Amelia with some pretext.

Amelia
And to whom are you talking like that?

Argilla
The lady is calling me. I must comply. Wait for me a moment.

At the moment when Argilla leaves Amelia, Sguiglio goes to her and attempts to distract her, always with their backs turned to the two lovers. Argilla quickly crosses the stage and distracts Papaccione, blocking with her body the view of the two lovers, who are at the back.

Sguiglio
Beg pardon, ma’am, but are you Doña Ammenela?

Amelia
Do you mean Amelia?

Sguiglio
Right, that’s her.

Argilla
(Quick Papaccione! Important things, great discoveries!)

Papaccione
(Eh? Let’s hear it, console my heart.)

Amelia
Who are you?

Sguiglio
The head page of Duke Zisso…

Amelia
Of the Duke of Alziras! And what do you want of me?

Sguiglio
They told me you were the head housekeeper?

Amelia
So?

Sguiglio
I am the assistant, and I ask you for a nice, spacious lodging, because I am suffering from heartbreak.

Amelia
What do I know about lodging? Go see the the one in charge of that.

Sguiglio
Now, is that a proper welcome? It looks like a full moon to me, and don’t you want to give a little light to a poor man who, seeing your unfriendly reaction, understood he’s left in the dark with, ah, a pain in his heart?

Amelia
As if I needed one more lunatic to annoy me!

Sguiglio
( And if we’re in a hurry? Meanwhile we just have this mule.)

Ines
(Ah! Just like the nightingale
Taking flight in the morning
At the first ray of the sun
With faint harmonies,
My innocent passion rises,
Now that I find myself
Near you, O dearest love.
I would to express to you
All the pain of my heart
Fully, in few words.
But love does not allow me
Such sweet pleasure.)

Fernando
(I cannot find peace,
My dear, away from you.
I only languish;
The stars have no splendor.
Nature is a horror to me.
But my cruel suffering
Already changes to joy,
Now that the archer god
Gives me new strength
Through the sparkling of your lovely eyes.
Ah! I wish I could always
Be consumed in those little flames.)

Argilla
When the owl at midnight
Shall sing with the vixen,
I shall hasten alone and knock
On your door alone.
Tap tap tap tap…
Silently and slowly you will follow me
And you will go down into that well
Which I shall show you.
The guardians of the treasure
Beelzebub and Astaroth
Before leaving you that gold,
They will give you some big lumps,
Papaccione, be not afraid!
They will look like ugly monsters,
Sphynxes, monkeys, shades, giants
Great Turks with turbans . . .
Papaccione, be not afraid!
Only with courage and audacity,
Can you become rich.

Papaccione
When I hear the great duet
Between the owl and the vixen,
I’ll cover myself
And set my watch
Tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock.
As soon as midnight chimes,
You will call me, and in a bound
Down into the well I’ll go.
Like a highwayman,
Who pounces upon the traveler,
I plunder those riches,
Grab the silver, gold, and jewels,
Gypsy girl, I’m scared.
By Astaroth and Barnabus,
They stand here at my side
I am not such an imbecile,
Nossir, I’m scared,
Only courage and audacity,
Can make me rich.

Sguiglio
And turn and face me
With those eyes, Amelia!
For I want to pluck
This game for myself.

Amelia
Stop simpering.
Are you crazy? Go away!
No dwarf will have
The passion to love me.

Sguiglio
As Ciommo, the duck boy, said,
The learned and knowledgeable
Don’t seem to me to be
The measure of man.
I’m saying I can soon
Make you forget
Who this boy
Or that boy is.

Amelia
I have never wasted time
With boys;
I have always liked
Good sense and age.
I’ve told you and tell you again,
You don’t do for me,
Go, friend, and find yourself
Some other beauty.
But be quiet!

The nearby sound of pastoral instruments announcing the arrival of the Duke dazes the lovers.

Argilla
(The Duke arrives!)

Fernando
(Alas! My kinsman is here!)

Sguiglio
But listen to me…take it easy…
(holding Amelia back)

Papaccione
It’s as it was.
(leaves where he entered)

Amelia
Let us go, Miss…
(frees herself from Sguiglio and surprises the two lovers)
What do I see! Ah! Naughty girl!
Ah, that Gypsy lowlife!
So you mock me!
And you brazen young man
If you ever set foot here again
You’ll see what will happen,
What damage you will suffer.

Ines and Fernando
Have pity, Amelia,
On a soul in love!

Sguiglio
Leave off this twaddle,
Don’t you see they’re babes in the woods?
In faith, it looks about as serious
As a codfish with sword.

Amelia
I am suffocating with rage,
A depressed mood comes over me,
Leave me, go away,
Or I’ll give in to my fury now
And then the comedy
Will end in tragedy.

Ines and Fernando
If inexorable fate
Opposes our love,
My beautiful flame, Ah! Keep
Your constant ardor for me;
Only death will be able
To divide our hearts.

Argilla
(Trust the Gypsy girl,
Trust in my heart,
In addition to my valor
Wiles will not be lacking.
Yes, my lively ingenuity
Will sing victory.)

Squiglio
(to Fernando)
Finish this quickly!
And get out of here, master!
See that if brother comes,
There will be trouble brewing,
I feel a storm of beatings
Now coming on!

Amelia takes Ines by the hand and leads her off. Fernando and Squiglio withdraw, and Argilla goes to collect her followers.

SCENE X
Don Ranuccio’s servants festively precede the Duke of Alziras, with Don Ranuccio at his side. Don Antonio follows the Duke’s cortege. Then Papaccione, leading another group of servants, and finally Argilla with Ghita, Manuelitta and other Gypsies.

Chorus
Feasts, joys, delights, pleasures . . .
Hunts, banquets, champagne, glasses . . .
All this shows what happiness
These jolly moments awaken in us,
How every festive, wine-loving soul
Is proud of such great favor!

Duke
Enough, friends. Ah, your dear sentiments
Are too gratifying to me.
What sweet and lovely moments
Make me savor your love!
If loyal and pure friendship
Greets me within these walls,
I shall rejoice amid the pleasures
That your sincerity prepares for me.

Ranuccio
Yes, be received within these walls
By friendship and true sincerity.

Chorus
Loyal and pure friendship!
You are the joy of every heart.

Papaccione
(caricaturing)
Papaccione Pitchfork,
Who does not shirk his duty,
Now bows down to his magnificent excellency,
And lowers his head,
And comes to present homage
To a man so defamed.
Compared to you, the sun is a zero
And the moon a slattern.
Of the round hemisphere,
You are the lantern, I mean the star.
And your heart is a map of the earth,
That mouth an Elysian field,
You are oblong, I mean round,
You are more handsome than the great exalted,
Who…that is…but I’m mixed up…
I cannot say anything more…
Your goodness will make up for
My loquacious silence.

Chorus
Ha! Ha! Ha!

Duke
Very nice, in truth.

Antonio
Indulge him, he is all alone.

Papaccione
(They are in awe
Of my sublime thoughts!)

Argilla
If you have a magnanimous heart in your breast,
Grant audience to a humble Gypsy,
Who brings you joyful news, my Lord.
May joy and jubilation sit beside you,
May benevolent stars shine upon you
With uncommon splendor.

Ghita and Manuelitta
Benevolent stars…

Duke
I accept your good wishes, kind lady,
And I pledge you my favor.

Papaccione
(But look at this Gypsy, how she slips in!
What a marvelous scowl! What blunt frankness!

Ranuccio
There, let us go inside.
Follow my steps, friend.

Duke
Lead on at your pleasure:
I am ever your follower.
May my happiness increase
The warm memory
Of an old friendship
That warms our heart.

Ranuccio
(Oh, unhappy memory!
I recall the my grievances,
And can hardly restrain
My concealed fury.)

Argilla
(The perverse and evil soul
Meditates treachery:
My vigilance
Will foil it anon.)

Antonio
(Unhappy memory
Recalls again his grievances,
While pretended friendship
Feeds his ire still more.)

Papaccione
(It seems like a thousand years
Till the night gets dark,
When doubloons, bless this year,
Will make me a great lord.)

Ghita, Manuelitta and Chorus
For you the sun is shining
Clear of cloud or mist;
Heaven bestows ever on you
Benign influences.
To the sound of jocund flutes,
In the flurry of such a fine day
Let joy breathe all around,
Sadness and horror keep far away.

All the procession enters the castle.

The curtain falls.

ACT II

A remote part of the castle. There is a wall across the stage. In the middle, a gate, to the left an armored door. Another door on the right, which leads via a secret stairway to the apartment reserved for the Duke of Alziras. At the rear an old cistern. Night is near.

SCENE I
Fernando and Sguiglio enter through the gate.

Sguiglio
And thirteen! Yes sir, the Gypsy, Miss Camilla, in person, told me to wait here, that she was going off to talk about urgent and serious matters.

Fernando
What could it be? Could you investigate the import?

Sguiglio
What investments and imports are you talking about? Just for saying, “Gypsy girl? Tell me because the master and I are one,” she hit me so hard on the back of my neck that I saw the moon in the well.

Fernando
Oh! If you love me, dear friend, try to see Argilla again. Tell her that I am here waiting for her and to come quickly to calm my spirit.

Sguiglio
Where the devil will I find her? That one vanishes like a Satan, and I don’t want to be seen wandering around so much in this castle…I imagine a figure, bless me, that attracts curious eyes because his rare handsomeness…would surely be caught trespassing?

Fernando
Let fate decide.

Sguiglio
Those are words of someone who jumps in the sea to collect clams and drowns.

Fernando
Go, I say!

Sguiglio
Don’t have a cow, I’m going now. Papa couldn’t teach
me to be regular merchant instead of a servant! Heaven
help me!
Exit through the gate

SCENE II
Fernando, then Ines

Fernando
Ines! Ines! Ah! You alone make me forget about my peril.

Ines
Would he depart without seeing me again?

Fernando
Oh! Stars! And isn’t that Ines?

Ines
Here he is! My Fernando is here…

Fernando
What benevolent fate guides your steps in this solitary precinct?

Ines
The desire to see you again, to tell you so many things…Amelia tells me that you could be a rogue, a wayward youth.

Fernando
Oh, how unjust! She will not speak thus when she knows who Fernando is.

Ines
Are you then worthy of me?

Fernando
(What did I say! That was reckless!)

Ines
Ah, speak, reveal to me a secret that my heart so yearns to know…

Fernando
Let me be silent for now and wait for a better time.

Ines
Come, ingrate!, Come! Do you fear me?
Don’t you know that love has no secrets?

Fernando
A cruel law
Compels my silence.

Ines
Ah! No, you don’t love me,
And you flatter me with false deceit.

Fernando
(Have you more anguish for me, tyrant fate?)
You think me a liar?
Can you doubt me?
Open my heart and see
Whether my fidelity is pure.

Ines
Think that until now I have kept
Myself for you:
That I would die of grief
If deprived of your mercy.

Fernando
Such a doubt offends me…

Ines
Tell me your story.

Fernando
For now I cannot…Soon you will know all: that my lips swear to you.

Ines
Shall I then be certain? Nor fear
To be betrayed by you?

Fernando
What fear? Ah, no, my life!
Just to look at those lovely eyes,
And it is not possible
To be a liar.

Ines
Pardon me, if I offend you,
But the fault is that of love
That makes me doubt.

Ines and Fernando
If it is true that your bonds
Are formed in heaven, o Hymen,
Make eternal
And indissoluble
The chains that bound our hearts,
That the archer god has joined!

Ines
Farewell!

Fernando
Come, then, my dearest…
Trust and fear not.

Ines and Fernando
Emotions! Ah, you who torture
This soul to the limit,
Do not disrupt the moment
Of a fleeting delight!
Exit Ines

SCENE III
Fernando, then Argilla from the gate.

Fernando
To what imprudence has an ill-considered impulse brought me!

Argilla
Don Fernando?

Fernando
Argilla, what have you to tell me?

Argilla
Listen, a betrayal is being planned here, a murder cloaked in friendliness…I elect you to surprise the attacker. Thus the distinguished gentleman, who will be indebted to you for his salvation, will be able to facilitate your winning of Ines.

Fernando
Explain yourself in clearer words.

Argilla
Treacherous Don Ranuccio, to avenge insults that he believes to have received from the Duke of Alziras, has seduced Antonio Alvarez with the prize of his daughter’s hand to become the assassin of the Duke, and this is the night when such a heinous misdeed is to be committed.

Fernando
What do I hear!

Argilla
Do you have weapons?

Fernando
I keep a concealed dagger to defend my life.

Argilla
Stay here and keep watch, and be ready to go into action at the sound of my voice.

Fernando
I’m going.
(hides)

SCENE IV
Argilla, then from the gate Sguiglio and Argilla’s Gypsy followers, with unlit torches, a little lantern, and chains.

Argilla
Come in, friends.

Sguiglio
Have you found my master?

Argilla
Yes.

Squiglio
Have you talked to him?

Argilla
Yes.

Sguiglio
And where is he now?

Argillo
In a safe place.

Sguiglio
You’ve made me curious! Did you tell him that you roped me in to help you with intrigue you thought up?

Argilla
No

Sguiglio
No? And you’ve done quite a bit!

Argilla
Do not doubt it, I shall tell him all very soon. Meanwhile, you go down into the cistern with my companions. I have explained to you all what is required for the scene I have planned.

Sguiglio
Remember the reward you promised me.

Argilla
You would like one of my Gypsies for a wife, wouldn’t you?

Sguiglio
That is, I would like you, but as this quail is reserved for grander hunters, I’ll console myself with your lesser solution, which would be a lass that is deserving.

Argilla
Down, you chatterbox! Take the chains down with you and the stuff to make the flames.

Sguiglio
See that we don’t make such a puff of sulfur that I have hysterical fits.

Argilla
You donkey! Will you shut up?

Sguiglio
What a stench of mold! It’s like a sting.

Preceded by the Gypsies, Sguiglio descends into the cistern with the little lantern lighting the way.

Argilla
You others hide over there, and be ready to obey me.
(The two Gypsies hide outside the castle.)
Now we’ll give the sign to the credulous Papaccione.
(knocks on the ironclad door)
He doesn’t answer! Hey! Hey!
Papaccione! Papaccione!

SCENE V
Papaccione, inside at first, then outside the door, and Argilla.

Papaccione
But if I don’t hear the owl and the vixen sing first, how am I supposed to answer you?

Argilla
(Oh, damned fool, watch out!) Open, I say. How many vixens do you want to hear? Didn’t you hear my voice?

Papaccione
Eh? It’s you the little vixen?

Argilla
What a marvel! Don’t you know that Gypsy and vixen mean the same thing? You really don’t know the mystic language.

Papaccione
And according to this cystic language of yours, the owl, who’s that supposed to be?

Argilla
You yourself, who were supposed to answer the invitation of this vixen.

Papaccione
Listen, sometimes I suspected I was a man on four legs, but I never thought I’d have wings, and that’s why I’ve always stayed stuck to terra firma and never got involved with bodices and petticoats.

Argilla
Get hold of yourself, we’re already set to start.

Papaccione
Now…When I shut this door, and I’m with you.
(closes the door, and puts the keys in his belt)

Argilla
(Oh! Those keys will soon be in my power.)

Papaccione
Argilla…I brought along this sack so I can bring all the more of the ducats in the well.

Argilla
Well done. Do you see these two doubloons? I found them and a lot more scattered on the first steps that lead down to the bottom of that old cistern…

Papaccione
Did you see? Were they shiny?

Argella
What do you mean! Do you think I don’t know gold?

Papaccione
Oh, how stupid of me! It’s the great metal that has always won your affection.

Argilla
I stretched out my hand to take some more, but an invisible force pushed me back: these are reserved for the good Papaccione alone!

Papaccione
Oh! What joy! However, I have to find some new way so this money doesn’t get found out about so that people don’t think I have so much more than usual, or I’ll be the most confounded man in the world.

Argilla
You’ll think about that later. Now go down into the cistern. The hour is already late…

Papaccione
I say…I really have to go all the way down there, is that right?

Argilla
How else are you going to get hold of the treasure?

Papaccione
Couldn’t the spirits have the goodness to bring it up to me here without causing me all this discomfort?

Argilla
You are one for the books! Go, get down there…and don’t waste any more time.

Papaccione
But why don’t we go down together?

Argilla
What for?

Papaccione
You would hold on to my back and I would gather it up at the same time.

Argilla
But this fortune is destined just for you…Papaccione, now I am going away…and so…

Papaccione
Wait, now I’m going down…do you know at least what kind of mood the two gentlemen are in who guard the treasure?

Argilla
Astartoh and Belzebuch? Don’t be afraid…I pacified them with my spells. Do you need proof?
(facing the cistern)
Hey, you! You who are guarding the immense riches hidden in this cistern, let good Papaccione hear the orders of your infernal god!

From the bottom of the cistern a flame is seen to rise, then the following subterranean chorus is heard…

Chorus
Descend, descend, Papaccione
So dear to the god Pluto!
Of coins a million
He generously offers you as a gift:
Descend, descend Papaccione,
So dear to the god Pluto!

Papaccione
(Ay me! What awful voices in masks!)

Argilla
Are you happy? Is anything else keeping you now?

Papaccione
(Now I would have been a great courageous man in my world, if I had not had the vice of always being accompanied by this cursed fear!)

Argilla
Watch out, though, that you aren’t wearing any metal or your luck could turn.

Papaccione
What metal? There’s nothing in my sack that would get in the way.

Argilla
I’m talking about any kind of metal…Do you have weapons? Keys?

Papaccione
I have the one for the gate, and for the prisoner’s chains.

Argilla
Leave them with me. You’ll have them back when you return (success!). Now on to the happy quest…

Papaccione
Now? Are you sure the steps go all the way down? Would I have to break my neck?

Argilla
So many excuses! So many pretexts! Now you’re making me lose patience.

Pappacione
No, wait, and see what’s pressing!
I’ll go down, righto, just fine!
But before I meet
The infernal band
I’d like to add
You as a companion.

Argilla
Coward! Every moment
Will cost you dear.

Papaccione
I go when it’s needed . . .
Nossiree! It’s not fear . . .
But it’s a little infectious
North wind
That afflicted me an ague
That just now I’m getting over.
Goodbye. I want to carry, my dear,
A carload of doubloons…
So? Tell me could I catch
A catarrh down there?

Argilla
Now I’m going…you stay…

Papaccione
Ah, no, love, stop!
Now I’m going down…watch me!

Another flame from the cistern

Mother of God! Alas!
What’s with this fire?

Argilla
Pluto is getting offended,
You have to pray to him now.

Papaccione
Right…He’s my master…
Now I’m going to placate him…
By those magnificent
Bright rays of her countenance
That were the splendid
Gifts of Proserpina,
Pluto, ah, be placated
Please!
If you desire
Holocausts
I offer you this Gypsy girl,
This fine sauce
For your well known
Gourmandise.

Chorus
(As above)
There amidst Tartarean
Cloisters terrible,
Your suppliant voice
Rapidly penetrated:
Pluto forgets
Past injuries
And is willing
To return his grace to you.
But any other insult
Will give him offense.

Argilla
Now, make up your mind.

Papaccione
I’m not afraid…
I become a hero…spirit and heart!
(But look how hard these steps are
That keep making me hold back.)

Sguiglio
(from the cistern)
Descend.

Papaccione
Who’s speaking?

Argilla
It’s a junior demon…

Squiglio and Servants
Descend…

Papaccione
Now I’m coming…

Sguiglio
Hurry up.

Papaccione
I’m here…
But see how upsetting this spirit is!
But see what a fright it’s giving me!
Goodbye…my beauty! If I get back alive
I’ll have no more dealings with spirits!
Here on the edge I’m stopped and weak-kneed,
I want to get hold of the doubloons there
And in such a cruel hysterical conflict,
Who will advise me what I must do?
(descends into the cistern)

Argilla
Merciful heaven! Oh, you guide my steps.
(opens the armored door and enters quickly)

Papaccione
(from the bottom of the cistern)
Help, Argilla, they put out my lantern!

Sguiglio
(disguising his voice)
Break your neck! To hell!

Papaccione
Oh mercy! They’re hauling me to the hot house!

Sguiglio
Quick, let’s get up, before he wakes up from the blow we gave him.
(emerging from the cistern with Gypsies)

SCENE VI
Argilla leads Don Sebastiano out, then Papaccione from the cistern, then Ranuccio and Antonio, Fernando observing them.

Sebastiano
Oh, my liberator! How can I repay you?

Argilla
Hush! Comrades! I entrust him to you!
(to Gypsies in hiding, who run forward at Argilla’s voice)
Surround him and take him to the gates of the castle…Wait for me, I’ll be there shortly. I can’t leave this place for now.

Sebastiano
Oh! Heavenly hand! It’s you who have opened my prison.
(leaves with the Gypsies by the gate)

Sguiglio
You’re Argilla? Our friend is down there making expenditures…I’m going back to my master.

Argilla
No…rather, you have to find a way to get into
Ines’s room. Tell her to watch out. I am afraid that
her father is planning to force her to marry Antonio tonight.

Sguiglio
In sum, you’ve figured that my poor heart has the strength to do this?

Papaccione
You did this to me, you miserable Gypsy.

Argilla
Papaccione, he’s coming back up.

Sguiglio
Drat! And how did he find the way?

Argilla
We know what to do…I’m hiding.
(goes to where Fernando is hiding)

Sguiglio
Oh, swords and tarnation!
Exit

Papaccione, climing up trembling, reaches the top of the
cistern.

Papaccione
Now I’m dying! Who will help me move my legs? I’m alive,
and don’t believe it! But what a devil of a beating! How
brutal the infernal rabbit punches! All the chains! All the noise! Then all the ghosts came together, and I by some miracle found the stairs to save myself! Where is that hussy who got me paid such a nice compliment? And now how do I get in there if she took the key?
(He goes to the door and is surprised to find it open)
Oh! What luck! The door is open? Ah, I’ve got into some more worse trouble! Get hold of the treasure, but never a word about when.
(goes in through the door)

Don Ranuccio enters and Antonio, wrapped in a cloak.

Ranuccio
The hour is late. Come, Antonio.

Argilla
(Ah! Here is the villain! Watch out, Don Fernando!)

Ranuccio
That is the door that leads to a secret stairway to the room where the Duke of Alziras sleeps. Go. Now he is in deepest slumber and no obstacle will hinder your determined arm and my fervent desire.
(opens the door indicated)

Argilla
(Fly, Don Fernando…head off the traitor.)

Fernando
(I go…Oh, heaven assist me!)
(He crosses the stage on tiptoe and goes through the same
door)

Antonio
But if I were ever discovered?

Ranuccio
And by whom, if everything is in ordered in such a way that the agent of my revenge will remain buried in impenetrable silence?

Antonio
Ah! There is no point in stopping the course of action halfway. Wait for me. In a few more moments you will be avenged, and Ines will make me happy.
(He exits through the door that Fernando entered.)

Argilla
(God of goodness! Oh, protect my enterprise!)
Exit through the gate

Ranuccio
At last it is resolved! Oh, how I feared that he would be hesitant at the last minute to do my will! Still in this moment my heart is agitated with palpitations…and it seems that a presentiment of some disaster…Eh! Vain fear! In this hour, my perfidious enemy will have paid the price of the injuries he has done me. But meseems I heard rapid footsteps! It is Antonio returning.

SCENE VII
Ranuccio; Antonio emerges anxiously followed by Fernando; then the Duke of Alziras enters from the same door without a cloak and grasping a sword, then Papaccione from his door, Amelia, dragging Sguiglio, and finally Argilla, leading Don Sebastiano.

Ranuccio
(to Antonio)
Well?

Antonio
Quiet…I am followed.
(flees through the gate)

Fernando
Villain! Try to flee me in vain…
(follows him)

Ranuccio
Oh, unjust fate!

Duke
(followed by servants)
Where is the impious assassin?

Ranuccio
Duke, what has happened?

Duke
Ah! Follow the traitor now…

Ranuccio
What is it?

Duke
A cry roused me from sleep…By the distant glow of a faint light I see the arm of an assassin about to strike me…

Ranuccio
Oh, my stars!

Duke
When a man whom I do not recognize, stops him, overtakes him and pursues him. I leap then from the bed, call my servants to engage the attacker…but he has vanished from my sight.

Ranuccio
Oh, heavens! Could a traitor be stalking in my peaceful abode?

Papaccione
(Ah! The Gypsy did it to me! The old man has got away! Now I am undone for sure!)

Amelia
Now you will tell the master why you furtively entered Ines’s rooms.

Sguiglio
Nossir, I came to find you…

Argilla
Come, have no fear…The Duke of Alziras is here for you.

Ranuccio
(What do I see! Alvarez!)

Papaccione
(He has returned! Oh, what a gallant!)

Sebastiano
(to the Duke)
Friend, ah, hold out your arms to me.

Ranuccio
What’s happening to me! Oh, what a blow!
I’ve been betrayed?

Duke
(struggling to remember him)
Ah, it seems…

Sebastiano
Can you not recognize me?

Duke
Alvarez! I am not deceived.
Oh, how you look!

Ranuccio
(Alas!)

Papaccione
(Alas!)

Ranuccio
(Oh, how it seems fate conspires
To my injure me!
I have lost vigor and energy . . .
I have no more courage!)

Duke
(Oh how many strange happenings
Does a single instant intertwine!
Bewildered and trembling,
That I cannot imagine!)

Amelia
(Oh how many strange happenings
Does a single instant intertwine!
Bewildered and trembling,
That I cannot imagine!)

Argilla and Sebastiano
(In that pallor the culprit
Reveals the fierce conflict
That his grave crime
Has aroused in his breast.)

Papaccione
(Oh! Delectable meat!
Unfortunate sausages!
Don Ranuccio will now
Make a fricassee of you!)

Sguiglio
(Hurray for Miss Argilla!
She pricks like a needle!
We see how this plot
Gets unraveled now!)

Duke
(to Sebastiano)
But how comes it are you here?

Sebastiano
(pointing to Papaccione)
That one will tell you . . .

Duke
Then you…

Argilla
He
Cannot speak.
For now, silence
Follows upon noise.
So that I will be able, my lord,
To reveal all to you.

Ranuccio
(Ah! Fury and hatred
tear my breast!
Beset by tremors,
Confused, disheartened,
This lost soul
Has no recourse.)

Argilla and Sebastiano
Fear and spite
Tear at his breast!
Beset by tremors,
Confused, disheartened
That lost soul
Has no recourse!)

The Others
(Everything arouses
A strong suspicion in me!
Beset by tremors,
Confused, disheartened,
This lost soul
Has no recourse.)
Exeunt severally.

SCENE VIII
The armory in the castle. Ines, then Ranuccio and Papaccione.

Ines
Whatever was Fernando’s man trying to tell me? But my indignant father is dragging his servant here. For what purpose?

Ranuccio
Come treacherous creature! Come and tell me how…

Papaccione
My Lord, let’s put down our hands, and talk like gentlemen, as mother nature made us, because if my fingers haven’t fallen off my hands, the rings are still there: I was able to avoid all the other weaknesses, but education has always been my passion.

Ranuccio
Your tricks do not succeed in allaying the anger that burns in my breast!

Papaccione
Consider, take a glass of wine with a dead ember in it, would you want to drink a drop of it? … (which would be the only May water for me!)

Ranuccio
Scoundrel!

Papaccione
Yessir. I’m fattened up now, so I’m a little bigger, but when I was a boy, I was was naughty like your excellency.

Ranuccio
You, capable of betraying me? To open the door to him whom I had so deliberately put in your custody?

Papaccione
In mine? I’m amazed! When I have to open a door, first I think if I have to get past some obstacle: the old rogue had no manners because he wanted to get away, while he was in a safe place, and your excellency treated him so well, a kitchen, and hidden away openly all day.

Ranuccio
But weren’t the keys with you?

Papaccione
I had them, but the cheating Gypsy took them away with her.

Ranuccio
Why did you let her have them?

Papaccione
No sir, because she got hold of them through a little trick she played on me…

Ranuccio
No…you are trying to deceive me. You were in cahoots with the prisoner. You opened the escape route for him.

Papaccione
What escape? If he went for a little walk and then returned on his own feet to pay you a visit?

Ranuccio
Are you mocking me still? Ah, villain!

Starts to draw his sword on Papaccione. Ines steps forward and restrains him.

Ines
Stop…

Papaccione
Help! Help!
Exit

Ranuccio
Get away! Why do you rob me of just revenge?

Ines
But what did that poor man do to you?

Ranuccio
Are you my enemy as well?

Ines
Can you think that of me when I try to deter you from an excess?

Ranuccio
Get ready to follow me to another of my castles near Toledo. Most pressing matters call me there, and there you will give your hand to Antonio Alvarez. (Thus will he know to conceal my failed design.)

Ines
No, father, Antonio will not be my husband.

Ranuccio
Brazen girl! You dare answer with such effrontery?

Ines
I am no longer able to dispose of my heart, if I have already given it to Fernando.

Ranuccio
To Fernando? Oh, hussy! And who is he that could make you a rebel against the paternal will?

Ines
A nice young man, and more than worthy of my tender feelings.

Ranuccio
Oh! What outrage! Ah! How many? How many of you betray me?

Ines
No! Father!

Ranuccio
Begone, miserable daughter, if you do not wish me, in the heat of my spite, to hurl my curse upon you…

Ines
Hush! Say no more! Horrified nature
Shudders at these words! Ah, look
Upon your unhappy daughter at your feet!
Curse me, why?

Ranuccio
Because you deserve
Your father’s Ire.

Ines
Ah! No…Ines is not
So culpable…

Ranuccio
Rise…Be banished
From my sight, and forever, wicked soul!

Ines
What brutal star shone on my birth!
If a first love was a fault,
If a chaste passion a crime,
Why give me, o father, a heart
So easy to love?
Ah, no, beloved father!
Please don’t be offended!
I feel at that shudder,
At your surly brow,
As if struck by lightning
A fatal blow.
Oh, death! Oh! Press into me
Your hooked claws,
Because I cannot bear
Such brutal anguish!
No more miserable state
Than mine is to be seen!
O unlucky love!
Oh, bitter suffering!
Exit

SCENE IX
The Duke of Alziras and Don Sebastiano

Sebastiano
And have you not yet tracked down the author of the intrigue mounted against you?

Duke
The culprit escapes my searches. My friend, ah, a thousand doubts are swirling in my brain! I do not recall having offended anyone. Only one whom I made unhappy could justly have wreaked the fury of his vengeance upon me. But he has now generously deigned to let go the injuries received from me for the bond of blood.

Sebastiano
Who is that?

Duke
Fernando, my unfortunate brother. I was led to believe that he conspired against my life, because he aspired to my fortune. I banished him from my side…And now that his slanderers, overcome with remorse, have revealed his innocence to me, I don’t know where to find him to press him to my breast.

Sebastiano
(Fernando revealed it to me. The moment is opportune.) And you did not recognize this youth, Duke, who stayed the hand of your assassin?

Duke
He fled from my sight pursuing that traitor. Oh, how I would like to know him! What reward does he not deserve from my gratitude?

Sebastiano
Well, then, wait for me. You will see him anon.

Duke
What? He is known to you?

Sebastiano
Wait for me, I say, and prepare your heart for a sweet surprise.
Exit

Duke
What does this mean? Has Alvarez discovered my liberator? Will he give me the pleasure of showing him my gratitude? Here he is, back already.

SCENE X
Sebastiano, Fernando, and the Duke of Alziras

Sebastiano
Look, he is your brother,
That same Fernando
Whom you wished to oppress,
Who saved your life.

Duke
(Ah! What a surprise this is!
Look at him, o my God! I dare not!
Has he so generously
Forgotten my offenses?)

Fernando
This heart was ever
By nature reluctant to cry out;
And every day forgetfulness
Dispersed the outrages I suffered.

Duke
I recognize my wrongs,
I am unworthy of pardon…

Fernando
Let this embrace be a sign
That you are yet dear to me.

Sebastiano
Let this embrace be a pledge
Of his sincere love.

Sebastiano, Duke and Fernando
Tender are the tears
That flood my brow!
Nature wins out,
And pain no longer presses.
And after battling
A violent tempest
Oh! How more beautiful
Is the peace of the heart!

Duke
But tell me…by what hand
Was the plot directed against me?

Fernando
I know not
But now in vain…

Sebastiano
Ah! Yes, the offense…
No, Duke, I do not deceive myself,
I have forsaken the base tyrant,
My persecutor.

Duke
Who? Ranuccio? Oh, what
An idea rises in my mind!
And envy and trembling
once tormented him
When my merciful sovereign
Preferred me to him
In the first honor of the court.

Sebastiano
For that reason he ordered
A fatal plot to drag you to death.

Duke
If he directed such perfidy,
Let the villain now be afraid.
The lightning of my rage
Will fall upon his head

Sebasatiano
Ah, yes…That disloyal soul
Has always intended murder;
Behold in me a victim
Of his cruelty.

Fernando
(Why is this monster
The father of my beloved?
And between duty and love
What am I to do?)

Duke
Let there be thanks to merciful heaven,
That in my mortal danger
It turned a friendly eye
And had pity on me.

Sebastiano and Fernando
Let there be thanks to merciful heaven,
That in you mortal danger
It turned a friendly eye
And had pity on you.

SCENE XI The Last
All the actors as they are indicated

Ranuccio
I come to you anxious to know, O Duke, the state of your health after the mishap you suffered.

Duke
(Ironically)
I appreciate your haste, and I hope shortly to give you the response you deserve.

Ranuccio
(Oh, no! He is repressing his anger! Ah, I am lost!)

Ines
Oh, you are here, my Fernando? Do you not know? My father wants to give me to Antonio as a bride.

Ranuccio
How! This is Fernando?

Duke
Yes, my brother…you don’t even recognize him.

Ines
He is your brother?

Fernando
And this, my brother, is the flame of my being?

Duke
Ranuccio’s daughter?

Amelia
Excellency! Your retainers bring you in chains Antonio Alvarez, whom they overtook in a neighboring village …here he is…

Sebastiano
My nephew!

Argilla
Yes, your nephew, he who seduced by Don Ranuccio agreed to your imprisonment in order to appropriate the property that belonged to you, and who, agent of the revenge of Don Ranuccio himself, would have stabbed the Duke of Alziras last night in his sleep, had not superhuman providence in the person of the Duke’s unknown brother revealed his deliverer to me.

Duke
Oh! Enormity !

Antonio
(Oh! Shame!)

Squiglio
(Oh! What a tangle!)

Papaccione
It’s enough for three more comedies!

Ghita
I’m surprised.

Manuelitta
Another Gypsy escapade!

Duke
Traitor!
(To Ranuccio)
The guilt is already engraved on your forehead. Although my office allows it, I do not wish to stand as your judge. The Duke of Alziras forgets your offense and orders you to be conveyed together with Antonio to the capital, so that both of you can make an accounting of the violence done to the good Don Sebastiano.

Papaccione
How fine the two capes of Maldonato and Malatesta are going to look on those two.

Ines
Ah! My lord…

Fernando
Ah, brother! He is the father of Ines…

Ranuccio
(kneeling)
If a true repentance…

Sebastiano
Rise, villain! Duke, if only the injury suffered by me powers the arm of your justice, I am no less generous than you, and I pardon him…

Duke
Then let him be forever confined to this castle and he will find his punishment in his own remorse.

Ranuccio
(Oh, bitter spite!)
Exit with Antonio

Amelia
Let not the pleasure stay so obscure, which unforeseen combinations bring about, which unite you together.

Argilla
And for the Gypsy girl who made it all happen, where’s the applause that seems owed to her?

Papaccione
She only made me stay down there buried with a treasure.

Sebastiano
Beneficent being! To you I owe the air of liberty that I breathe. Your virtues deserve a better fate. Ah! Come into my arms! You will take the place of that daughter whom I lost as a babe and whom I can never erase from my memory.

Sguiglio
(I thought the old man had been hatching some other plot!)

Argilla
I am beholden to you, but do not believe that I am of Gypsy origin: I am from an illustrious family that I have been searching for everywhere. She whom I always honored as a mother, at the end of her years confessed that she had stolen me as a baby while I strolled on a river bank, away from my inattentive nurse.

Sebastiano
What a coincidence!

Argilla
And so that I might more easily discover my true origin, she gave me this jewel that hung around my neck when I was seized.

Sebastiano
Heavens! Well! You realize my hopes! Ah, yes, look here is my surname engraved! Come to my breast! Feel the rapid beating of my heart that has regained in you my long lost daughter!

Amelia
Oh! What a surprise!

Sguiglio
And if only I could find a knight as a father!

Argilla
You the author of my life? I your daughter?
Oh, father! Oh! My dear ones! I shiver still
From so much good fortune!
Is a frienly dawn at last rising for me?
And can it be true? Has a propitious heaven
Showered me with such a great gift?
Now I understand the sweet stirrings,
Those soft unknown feelings,
That nature aroused in me!
Oh! Clasp me, father, to your breast,
And may your heart be full of joy
If till now it has known only sighs!

Sebastiano
Yes, I clasp you, daughter, to my breast,
And let my heart be full of joy
If till now it has known only sighs!

Argilla
Oh, inexpressible joy!
Oh, my happiness!
The exceeding contentment
Makes me speechless!
Incomprehensible pleasure
Blesses my soul!
Oh, inexpressible joy!
Oh, my happiness!

Sguiglio
(to the Duke)
Come now with the happy folk,
Amid balls and feasts,
Let’s see our teeth, Sir,
Get a bit of exercise.

Papaccione
(to Argilla)
Lady, as you are now,
There is no more chance for me …
With Ghita, who is in agreement,
I see myself hitching up.

The others
Ah! After the violent cloud,
That affrights the spirit,
Oh! How much more welcome
Is sweet serenity.

Chorus
And now that in every heart
Peace and love smile,
Let us spend this fine day
In delightful frivolity!

THE END
