Ugo, conte di Parigi (1832)

The More I learn, the Less I Know

Ugo, conte di Parigi (1832)

Hugh, Count of Paris
Lyric tragedy in two acts
Libretto by Felice Romani

[The librettist sets the action at the end of the 9th century, but all the personages lived in the 10th. Hugh, the Great, Duke of the Franks and Count of Paris (ca. 898-956), was the son of Robert I of France and Beatrice de Vermandois, father of Hugh Capet (king in 987). Hugh was a contemporary of Louis IV, who was crowned in 936 at the age of 16. However, in the opera Hugh is supposedly regent for Louis V, son of Emma of Italy and Lothair, king of the Franks. But Louis V did not ascend the throne until 986, thirty years after Hugh’s death.]

An audio recording from Opera Rara posted in 42 clips.

DEDICATION

To the noble Count Francesco Mastiani Brunacci, Knight of the Grand Order of St. Stephen and of the Légion d’Honneur of France, Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of St. Joseph and Chamberlain of HRH the Grand Duke of Tuscany

To whom if not to you, Sir, could this poetic composition on the current occasion be appropriately dedicated? Who is there among us who does not agree that your person is worthy of the highest praise? To the distinguished qualities that render you admired and favored, now is added that of the presidency of the honorable Accademia dei Ravvivati, which has deigned to honor us with its confidence, granting us also for this season the stages over which it has control. Thus we find ourselves obliged to make every effort in our power so that such confidence in the coming presentations may be rewarded with satisfaction, not only of the generous Pisans but of all who will gather to enjoy the singing of such as have no equals in the art that fills the heart with sweetness. And in again conferring such an honor upon us, you have certainly no small merit, to whose patronage must be ascribed in part the achievement of the production (dare we say?) thus accomplished. For the reasons here made clear, anyone might consider it our obligation and duty to
proffer with this poetic composition our most humble compliments.

ATTO PRIMO

Sala nella reggia di Laon: in fondo dai veroni sorge la cupola della cattedrale. Trono da un lato e sedili più bassi. La sala è cinta d’armati. Tutto indica una grande solennità.

SCENA PRIMA
Cavalieri francesi indi Folco
.

Coro
No, che in ciel de’ Carolingi
Non è l’astro impallidito:
D’alma luce rivestito
Splende ancor pel nostro re.
Dio, che il serto al crin gli cingi
Di Lotario invendicato,
Sia per lui più fortunato,
Sia difeso ognor da te!
(entrano negli appartamenti reali)

Folco
Vani voti! A lui del padre
Riservata è sol la sorte,
Di superba e rea consorte
Segno all’odio anch’ei sarà.
Ugo invano, invan sue squadre
Gli fian scudo: ov’io non moro,
Sovra il capo di costoro
Mia fortuna sorgerà.

Ricominciano le acclamazioni.

SCENA SECONDA
Squillano le trombe. Diffila il corteggio reale. Luigi in mezzo di Emma e di Ugo. Folco fra i cavalieri. Emma e Luigi salgono in trono.

Ugo
Principi, conti, cavalieri, e quanti
Finora io m’ebbi ne’ consigli e in campo
Saggi e prodi compagni, è giunto il giorno
Ch’io pur l’augusta potestà deponga
Esercitata un lustro intier nel regno.
Il prezioso pegno
Che m’affidava un re, l’unico germe
De’ Carolinghi eroi,
Adulto io rendo al trono avito, a voi.

Coro
Viva Luigi il prode,
Germe dei nostri re.

Mentre il Coro canta queste parole, Emma si toglie la corona e la pone sul capo a Luigi.

Ugo
Ah! questo è il dì più fulgido
Che a me sorrise il sole,
Sul trono io veggo splendere
Dei nostri re la prole.
Altro a compir non restami
Che a conquistarti allori,
Che offrirti coi sudori
E sangue e vita ancor.

Luigi scende dal trono.

Luigi
Sì, discoprire il perfido,
Che mi privò d’un padre,
Sarà primiero ed ultimo
Del regno mio pensier:
A te lo giuro, o madre,
Lo giuro al mondo intier.

Ugo
Or fia che tremi il Mauro
Ed il Normanno altero,
Se tu dei nostri eserciti
Duce sarai primiero.

Luigi
Sì, mi avrai teco a vincere,
Se il senno tuo m’aiuta.

Folco
(Trionfa pur, più rapida
Sarà la tua caduta.)

Luigi
Al nuovo dì si adunino
I prodi cavalier.

Tutti
L’orifiamma ondeggi al vento,
L’orifiamma vincitrice,
Qual cometa di spavento
Che de’ rei la fin predice,
E il gran Carlo a noi rinato
L’universo crederà.

Suonan le squille del tempio.

Ugo
Vieni al tempio, e santa mano
Benedica il regio serto.

Emma
(Contenermi io tento invano.)

Luigi
(Di sua fede omai son certo.)

Tutti
Vieni al tempio, ed invocato
Fausto il ciel ti arriderà.
Sommo Dio, che prence infante
Sostenesti in tanti mali,
Lui cresciuto, lui regnante
Copri ancor di tue grand’ali,
E ogni perfido attentato,
Ogni insidia vincerà.
(partono tutti)

SCENA TERZA
Bianca sola, indi damigelle.

Bianca
Al tempio ei muove… e me condurre al tempio
Ei pur pensava! Io me ne sciolsi. Ahi! sempre
Sciormen potessi! Io lo potrò… Tentarlo
Almen mi giova. Già la trama è ordita.
Vieni, sorella, omai, vieni e m’aita,
Ah! quando in regio talamo
Felicità credei,
No non sapea che vittima
A splendid’ara andrei;
No, non sapea che piangere
Dovuto avrei così.

Escono le damigelle di Bianca sollecite.

Che mi recate?

Damigelle
Adelia
Dall’Aquitania giunge.

Bianca
Adelia! Oh gioia!

Damigella
(accennando dai veroni)
Il nobile
Vedi corteo da lunge,
Ch’oltre le regie soglie
Ad incontrarla uscì.

Bianca
No, che infelice appieno
Non mi volesti, o fato,
Se ritrovar mi è dato
Il mio coraggio ancor.
Vola d’Adelia in seno,
Vola alla speme, o cor.
(va incontro ad Adelia; rimangono le damigelle)

SCENA QUARTA
Adelia e Bianca.

Bianca
Uscite tutte.

Le damigelle partono.

Favellarti io deggio
Anzi ch’ei torni.

Adelia
Né il marito al tempio
Seguito hai tu?

Bianca
Sposo soltanto… e al cielo
Grazie ne rendo. Altro marito, o Bianca,
Ben altro vuolsi.

Adelia
Oh! che di’ tu? Me dunque,
Me d’Aquitania non chiamasti, o suora,
Che spettatrice di rancori e d’odi?

Bianca
Te chiamo a sciôrmi d’abborriti nodi…
Non replicar. Misera io son… Fuggire
Tal corte io voglio, e me ne fia pretesto
Da te recato d’egra madre invito.

Adelia
Ma tale inganno ordito
Da me non fia.

Bianca
Fallo previeni orrendo.
Se qui rimango io ne son rea.

Adelia
Che intendo?

Bianca
Odio Luigi… ed odio
La madre sua… superbi e imbelli entrambi,
Nudi d’ogni virtù. Chi amar vorrei…
È qui delitto amar.

Adelia
Cielo! e d’amore
Ardi tu dunque… e per vietato oggetto?

Bianca
Sì, nella mente, in petto
Tutte ho d’amor le furie… Un punto solo,
Un sol punto mi vinse; e fu quel giorno
Che fidanzata al re, venne ai confini
Ugo ad accormi.

Adelia
(con sorpresa)
Ugo! (Gran Dio!… che ascolto?)

Bianca
Compiangimi, sorella… il cor mi ha tolto.
Io lo vidi… Ah! chi non l’ama
Se lo vede un solo istante?
Lo splendor della sua fama
Abbelliva il suo sembiante…
Lo mirai… restai rapita
Nel piacer che in me destò.
La prim’alba di mia vita
Quel momento a me sembrò.

Adelia
Sciagurata!

Bianca
Ah! sì, son tale.

Adelia
Né tentasti?…

Bianca
Tutto, e invano.

Adelia
Ah! se è fitto in cor lo strale
Non lo svelle ingegno umano…
Ah! la cerva il porta seco
Sanguinoso ovunque va.
Dove pur tu fugga meco
L’amor tuo ti seguirà.

Bianca
Dispietata! ed ogni speme
Vuoi rapirmi in questa guisa?

Adelia
No… piangiam… soffriamo insieme,
Non sarai da me divisa.

Bianca
Cara Adelia, mi seconda,
E sperar mi lascia ancor…

Adelia
Spera… spera… (Si nasconda
Lo scompiglio del mio cor.)

Bianca e Adelia
Là, nel natal mio suolo,
La della madre in seno,
Avrò del pianto almeno
La triste libertà.
Forse avrà fine il duolo…
Forse sarò guarita…
O questa mia ferita
La terra coprirà.

Adelia
Sì, ripariamo all’ombra
Delle materne mura;
Aura più mite e pura
Noi spirerem colà.
Forse di nubi sgombra
Anco vedrem l’aurora;
Un dì godremo ancora
Della primiera età.
(per uscire)

SCENA QUINTA
Luigi, Folco e dette.

Luigi
Bianca!… Mi fuggi? È forza
Che alfin tu m’oda.

Bianca
E il bramo. A te mi guida
Trista necessità.

Luigi
Ti guida forse
Letizia mai? Torbida sempre e muta
A me t’appressi. Un anno intiero è corso
Che un tuo sorriso vo cercando invano.

Bianca
Crebbe con me un arcano
D’affanno istinto… ed ei s’accresce adesso
Ch’egra la madre, e da’ Normanni cinta,
Per lunga ed ardua via
A me la suora ambasciatrice invia.

Adelia
Signor… la madre oppressa
L’ultima volta al sen questo primiero
Pegno dell’amor suo stringer implora.

Bianca
Con la novella aurora
Io partirò: qualunque indugio è grave
Al tremante mio cor.

Luigi
Tu resterai.

Bianca
Io! resterò!

Luigi
Sì…

Bianca
Per qual legge?

Luigi
Il sai.

Folco
(a Luigi)
(Ti raffrena.)

Bianca
(Oltraggio è questo;
Crudo oltraggio.)

Adelia
(a Bianca)
(Ahi! d’ira è acceso.)

Folco
(come sopra)
(Finger giova.)

Bianca
(a Luigi)
Oh! come presto
Hai di re lo stile appreso!
Onde sensi in te sì alteri?
Con qual dritto imponi, imperi?

Luigi
Con qual dritto!

Folco
(Non svelarti!)

Luigi
(con calma)
Col diritto dell’amor.

Bianca
Io tel toglio, se può farti
Tanto ingiusto e insultator.

Luigi
Bianca, di’: più non rammenti
Che per noi l’altar s’infiora?
Che i solenni giuramenti
Profferir dobbiamo ancora?
Nol rammenti?

Adelia
(Oh! rio cimento!)

Bianca
Sol la madre or io rammento.

Luigi
Affrettiamo il sacro rito.
Pria che imbruni ei sia compito;
Ed io stesso al sen materno,
Io doman ti condurrò.

Bianca
(Oh! supplizio! oh! rio martire!
Meco ei sempre! ah! pria morire.
Pria le faci dell’Averno
All’altare invocherò.)

Adelia
(Per pietà non ti tradire…
Segui, ah! segui il suo desire…
Nel suo volto io ben discerno
Che il sospetto in cor gli entrò.)

Luigi
(Ella freme, e ancor coprire
Tenta invan le inique mire…
Giunto è il dì che gioco e scherno
Più di lei non mi vedrò.)

Folco
(Ella freme, e ancor coprire
Tenta invan le inique mire…
Giunto è il dì che gioco e scherno
Più di lei non ti vedrò.)

Luigi
Bianca! rispondi.

Adelia
(Sorella! io tremo.)

Bianca
Presso è la madre al punto estremo
Col pianto al ciglio, col lutto in cuore
Bianca ricusa irne all’altar.

Luigi
(prorompendo)
E cieca, aggiungi, d’un altro amore,
Non osa il tempio di profanar.

Adelia
Cielo! che dici?

Luigi
Oh! mio furore!

Bianca
M’insulti!

Luigi
Il merti.

Adelia
(Che dir? Che far?)

Bianca
Hai ben pensato a questi accenti,
Sai tu qual alma, qual cor tu tenti?
Un’alma ardente, un cor fiammante
Di sdegno immenso, d’immenso amor.
Fra noi s’innalza da questo istante
Barriera eterna d’odio e furor.

Luigi
Quel cor conosco; ne so gli arcani…
Ne leggo i moti, gli affetti insani…
Esso ha distrutta ogni mia speme,
Esso ha tradito fede ed onor.
Ma la vendetta che in sen mi freme
Sia differita per tuo terror.

Adelia
Deh! sospendete… deh! vi calmate…
Tanta alla madre onta celate…

Folco
(Di questo giorno, caro ad un regno,
Non sia la fine lutto e squallor.)

Adelia
(Vieni, infelice, fuggi il suo sdegno…
Tempo a calmarsi lascia a quel cor.)

Adelia tragge seco Bianca. Folco e Luigi partono dai lati
opposti.

SCENA SESTA
Atrio. Ugo circondato da cavalieri francesi.

Coro
Bada. Fatal ti fia
Sì cieca securtà;
L’abisso al piè ti sta:
Pensa a ritrarti.

Ugo
D’insana gelosia che posson l’arti?

Coro
Più di nemico aperto
Pavento il traditor.
Tu non conosci ancor
Folco qual sia.

Ugo
Saldo la mia virtù scudo mi fia.
Non temete ov’io non temo,
Di Lotario è giusto il figlio:
Al mio braccio, al mio consiglio
Tutto ei deve, e ben lo sa.
Se obliarlo ancor potesse…
Se in altrui sua fé ponesse…
Il mio cor di sé contento,
Odio mai non nutrirà…
Oscurata in un momento
La mia gloria non verrà.

Coro
Generoso! il ciel conceda
Che più chiara ognor si veda,
Né sia premio la sventura
Di sì pura fedeltà.

Ugo
Ah! mi tolga la fortuna
Quanti in me favori aduna.
Se non grande, almeno amato
Ugo in terra ancor sarà…
Cara Adelia, in ogni stato
Il tuo cor mi resterà.

I cavalieri accomiatati da Ugo si ritirano.

SCENA SETTIMA
Adelia ed Ugo.

Ugo
Che veggo? Adelia!… Oh gioia!
Tu in queste mura!…

Adelia
Inaspettata io giungo.
Parla sommesso.

Ugo
Oltre ogni mia speranza
Io ti riveggo!… e vuoi che freno io ponga
Al mio contento?

Adelia
(Oh, che mai dirgli?)

Ugo
E donde
Timor cotanto?… Perché taci e figgi
Gli sguardi al suolo?

Adelia
Nel materno tetto,
Ugo, io non sono. Egra è la madre, e cinta
Di duro assedio è la natal mia terra.

Ugo
Dell’infelice guerra
Parlò la fama: ed a recarvi aita
Io m’accingeva, e a meritar tua destra
Vincitore io correa dei tuoi nemici.

Adelia
Ah! non chiederla mai.

Ugo
Cielo! che dici?

Adelia
Troppo diss’io…

Ugo
Favella…
Qual m’ascondi mistero? Avvi chi tenti
Contendermi il tuo cor? Forse si oppone
La superba tua suora ai nostri voti?

Adelia
Ah! nol pensar… a lei fur sempre ignoti.

Ugo
Li saprà. Vogl’io svelarli,
Ottenerti io vo’ da lei.

Adelia
Ah! giammai…

Ugo
Giammai!… che parli?

Adelia
Tu non sai… Tacer tu dêi.

Ugo
Di tua man me forse indegno
Bianca tien perch’io non regno?
Forse te, te pur seduce
D’un diadema lo splendor.

Adelia
Ah! tu splendi d’una luce
Ben più cara a nobil cor.

Ugo
Questo braccio, questo acciaro
Fu sostegno a più di un trono.
Bianca sa ch’ei può del paro
Uno averne, e offrirlo in dono.
Più d’un serto io disdegnai
Di raccogliere per me…
Se vaghezza in cor tu n’hai,
Li poss’io raccor per te.

Adelia
Ah! non io di più potrei
Adorarti e in pregio averti:
La tua gloria agli occhi miei
Tutti oscura i regii serti.
Il tuo cor soltanto amai,
Il tuo cor cui par non è…
Ah! la fé ch’io ti giurai
Non l’avrei giurata a un re.

Ugo
Parla dunque: rassicura
L’alma mia dubbiosa, incerta…

Adelia
Sappi… ah! no… la mia sciagura
Non fia mai, giammai scoperta.

Ugo
Parla, deh! te ne scongiuro
Per l’onore, per la fé.

Adelia
Tacer giuri?

Ugo
Tutto io giuro…

SCENA OTTAVA
Coro di damigelle e detti.

Coro
Bianca in traccia vien di te.

Adelia
Se tu m’ami… se ti move
Il terror che il sen mi gela…
Taci… va’… ritratti altrove…
Un istante a lei ti cela,
Ti fia noto il mio segreto,
Il mio core io ti aprirò.
Ah! l’idea ti renda lieto
Ch’io fui tua, che tua morrò.

Ugo
Ch’io ti lasci in questo stato!
Ch’io m’involi al suo cospetto!
Tu non sai qual m’hai destato
Dubbio in mente, in cor sospetto…
Me minaccia il tuo segreto,
Se svelarsi a me non può…
Ah! mai più tranquillo e lieto,
Mai sicuro io non sarò.
(Ugo parte)

SCENA NONA
Adelia e Bianca.

Adelia
Tu di me in traccia?

Bianca
M’abbandoni in questi
Tremendi istanti?

Adelia
Il tuo dolore è il mio…
E ancor più amaro forse… Oh, mia sorella!
Che farai tu?

Bianca
Dell’ardimento al colmo
Giunto è Luigi. Dalla reggia un passo
Mi è vietato scostarmi. Alcun non fia
Qui cavalier che a liberarmi imprenda?
Ad Ugo io volo…
(per uscire)

Adelia
Ah! resta.

Bianca
Ei mi difenda.

Adelia
Bianca te perdi, e lui…
Al precipizio corri…

Bianca
Io vi son tratta…
Mi vi spinge il destin.

Adelia
A te mi stringo…
Non uscirai da queste braccia, o stolta.

Bianca
Scostati: giunge alcun.

SCENA DECIMA
Luigi, Folco, cavalieri, dame e detti.

Luigi
Bianca! mi ascolta.
Delle discordie nostre
Piena è la corte omai. Quantunque io t’ami,
Pur l’amor mio t’immolerei, più tosto
Che stringer nodo dal tuo core odiato.
Ma la ragion di stato,
Alta ragion l’ordia,
Né disciorlo mi è dato a voglia mia.

Folco
(Che mai dirà?)

Adelia
(L’inspira,
Pietoso ciel!)

Coro
Tutti a compor quest’ire
Noi ti preghiam.

Folco
Che mai nel re t’offende?
Verace parla!

Bianca
Sospettata donna
Puote senz’onta a chi sospetto nutre
Unirsi mai? Con chi di tutto adombra
Pace sperar?

Luigi
E tu il sospetto sgombra.

Bianca
Indarno or fora.

Luigi
Indarno
Non fia, tel giuro, se restar consenti,
Se al tempio vieni.

Bianca
Della madre… il dissi…
Cura mi prende.

Luigi
E a lei rivolto è pure
Il mio pensier… e ne avrai prova espressa.
Ugo a me venga.

Bianca e Adelia
(Ah! cielo! Ugo!)

Coro
Ei s’appressa!

SCENA UNDICESIMA
Ugo e detti.

Luigi
Dell’Aquitania il regno
Minacciano i Normanni, e pronta aita
La cadente regina a noi richiede.
Alla tua salda fede,
Al tuo senno, al tuo braccio, Ugo, io commetto
La gloriosa impresa.

Ugo
Ed io l’accetto.

Luigi
Quando fia sgombro e libero
All’Aquitania il varco,
Dille ch’io stesso assumere
Saprò più grato incarco;
Quel di guidar costei
Securamente a lei,
Ch’or vieta a me di compiere
Fatal necessità.

Bianca
(Fremo.)

Folco
(Si turba.)

Adelia
(Io palpito.)

Ugo
(Tremante Adelia è tanto!)

Bianca
E solitaria e vedova
Senza una figlia accanto…
Sarà la madre ancora?…

Luigi
A lei ne andrà la suora.

Bianca
Ella ne andrà!…

Adelia
(Raffrenati.)

Bianca
Senza di me ne andrà?

Folco
(Ella si scopre.)

Ugo
E dubiti
D’Ugo tu forse?… Parla!

Luigi
A lui fidando Adelia,
A sposo egli è fidarla.

Bianca
A sposo!

Adelia
(Oh ciel!)

Ugo
(Che ascolto?)

Folco
Non anco un anno è volto
Che lui sceglieva a genero
L’estinto genitor.

Luigi
E la sua brama a compiere
Pronto son io.

Bianca
Tu!… quando?

Luigi
In questo dì medesimo.
Io gliene fo comando.

Ugo
Ed io?…

Bianca
Tu pria… tu dêi,
Se cavalier tu sei,
Partir, pugnare e riedere
D’un regno salvator.

Ugo
Adelia!

Adelia
Udisti?

Folco
(a Luigi)
(A fingere
Segui per poco ancor.)

Tutti in segreto.

Adelia
(ad Ugo)
È giunto l’orribile istante temuto…
Se core hai magnanimo, pronunzia un rifiuto,
L’amore nascondi, seconda i miei detti…
Se insisti, se accetti, te… perdi con me.

Ugo
(ad Adelia)
Oh! quale nell’anima mi poni scompiglio!
Che temi? che palpiti? qual vedi periglio?
Nasconder del core gli affetti non soglio,
Palesi li voglio: son degni di te.

Bianca
(Che penso? che medito?… qual volgo sospetto;
Qual furia, qual demone, mel suscita in petto?
Si scacci: è tremendo: mi desta terrore.
Delirio è d’un core ch’è fuori di sé.)

Luigi
(a Folco)
Qual cor può comprendere la smania ch’io sento?
Scoprir vo’ la perfida, scoprirla pavento:
A tôrmi la benda, e sciogliermi il velo,
Funesto il tuo zelo servigio mi fe’.

Folco
(a Luigi)
Ti acqueta, dissimula: per prova saprai
Che fosti coi perfidi tu credulo assai.
Dal tuo disinganno, da questa scoperta
Dipende la certa salvezza del re.

Luigi
Ugo!… Udisti?

Ugo
Udii.

Luigi
Più grato
Te credeva a tal favore.

Ugo
Grato, io sì…

Adelia
(interrompendolo)
Non io. Donato
Sol da me sarà il mio core.

Bianca
(Io respiro.)

Luigi
E a te lo chiedo
D’Ugo in nome: e posso io credo…

Bianca
Nulla puoi sul cor di lei…

Ugo
Né al suo cor far forza io vo’.

Luigi
Lei ricusi.

Ugo
Il deggio.

Luigi
Il dêi?
(prorompendo)
Traditori! or còlti io v’ho.

Tutti
Qual favella!

Luigi
È omai svelata
L’empia fiamma che nudrite.

Ugo
Io! che sento?

Adelia
(Sventurata!)

Ugo
Io!

Luigi
(alle guardie)
Sì: lo custodite.

Tutti
Che mai tenta?…

Ugo
Quale oltraggio?…
D’insultarmi hai tu coraggio?
A tal onta ardisci espormi,
Osi tu tal fallo appormi?
Chi mi accusa?

Luigi
(accennando Bianca)
Quel pallore,
Quel terror ti denunziò.

Tutti
(Giusto cielo!)

Bianca
(Oh, mio furore!)

Ugo
(Ah! qual vel mi si squarciò!)

Bianca
Sì, superbo… il vero ascolta.
L’amo…

Adelia
Ah! taci…

Bianca
Io lo ripeto.
L’amo, sì: ma né una volta
Gli ho svelato il mio segreto…
Mai nol seppe; il ciel ne attesto…
S’avvi error, mio tutto egli è.

Luigi
Mentitrice!

Coro
(Oh! dì funesto.)

Luigi
Mal lo scusi.

Ugo
M’odi, o re!
Sa ciascun, tu stesso il sai,
Di qual tempra è d’Ugo il core,
Se mentir potrebbe mai
Per lusinga o per timore.
Giuro, o re, per l’onor mio:
Vòlto ad altra è il mio pensier.

Tutti
La palesa.

Ugo
(veggendo il timor d’Adelia)
Non poss’io.

Bianca
(Vòlto ad altra!)

Luigi
Menzogner!

Bianca
(ad Ugo)
Non mentir: palesa il vero…
Io l’esempio a te ne diedi…
Io saprei del mondo intiero
Per te l’ira disfidar.
Di cambiar così fingendo
La mia mente invan tu credi:
Nulla v’ha per me d’orrendo,
Nulla più del dubitar.

Ugo
(a Bianca)
Sciagurata! ah! tu non sai,
Qual ferita a me recasti!
Non avessi osato mai
Tu, crudel, di favellar!
Della Francia lo sgomento,
L’onta mia, la tua ti basti.
Di più tristo e crudo evento
Ch’io non t’abbia ad accusar.

Luigi
(a Bianca)
Forsennata! è il ver palese:
Sì, pur troppo invan lo tace.
Altre colpe ed altre offese
Io vi debbo rinfacciar.
Il mio trono è insidiato,
È distrutta la mia pace…
Ma, ch’io resti invendicato,
Coppia rea, non lo sperar.

Adelia
Cessa… parti… ah! non si dia
Scena al regno ancor più trista…
Morta io fossi, ah! morta pria
Che la madre abbandonar!

Folco
Vieni, o sire: ti allontana:
Lor perfidia appieno hai vista…
Questa coppia audace, insana
Noi saprem punir, frenar.

Coro
(Ah! non anco il ciel placato
Con un regno sventurato.
Ah! del padre il fato orrendo
Segue il figlio a minacciar.)

Folco
Rendi il ferro.

Ugo
(spezza la spada)
Io tal lo rendo.

Folco
(Incomincio a trionfar.)

Tutti partono. Ugo è condotto tra le guardie.

SCENA DODICESIMA
Prigione ove è rinchiuso Ugo. Ugo solo.

Ugo
Aure di morte io qui respiro ognora!…
Ma pur m’è caro il rammentar che Adelia
Per me d’amor sospira…
Ah! m’ebbi ognor presente in questo loco
Il dì che il labbro mio
Tremante a lei porgea l’estremo addio;
Ella la man mi strinse e un solo accento
Profferire il dolor non le permise:
Ma oppressa dal martiro
Tutto il suo dir converse in un sospiro.

Tacqui allor, l’abbandonai…
E il bene, l’idol mio
Come indietro il piè lasciava,
Mi fermava, e lei chiamando
Esclamava sospirando,
Infelice è questo cor!
Cara Adelia, idolo mio,
Infelice è questo cor.
Ma di tante ingiuste pene
N’avrà un Nume alfin pietà,
Tornerò qual pria, ma Adelia
Forse mia più non sarà!

Se ad altro amore
Ti astrinse il Fato,
I tuoi bei dì
Non turberò.
Ma almen dirai
Colui che amai,
Virtù nudrì,
Onor serbò;
E lui da forte
Con la mia morte
Chi mi tradì,
Salvar saprò.

Chi giunge?

SCENA TREDICESIMA
Bianca e detto.

Bianca
Bianca!

Ugo
Tu!

Bianca
Stupir ne dêi?
Bianca non dorme. A tal siam giunti omai
Che né sbarre, né carcere, né ferri
Più divider ne ponno.

Ugo
Oh! che favelli?
Siam divisi per sempre.

Bianca
Uniti siamo…
Uniti, sì, non paventar. Qui Bianca
Più di Luigi impera; i ceppi tuoi
Per me cadranno e tosto: e guerra a morte
Intimeremo ai miei nemici e ai tuoi.

Ugo
Ch’io divenga ribelle? e dir mel puoi?
Con questa macchia in fronte
Me non vedrà la Francia.

Bianca
Ed io l’avrei
Forse minore, se il trionfo nostro
Fosse men certo! Pur, se il vuoi, la spada
Resti oziosa, e a queste mura inique
Volgiam, se giova, fuggitivi il tergo.
Vieni: securo albergo
Ci fian miei stati. D’Aquitania il regno
È tuo da questo istante.

Ugo
Un regno, o Bianca…
Un regno non usurpo… io lo difendo.

Bianca
Amor tel dona.

Ugo
Il doni altrui.

Bianca
Che intendo?
Tu lo sdegni?… parla… forse
Perché a Bianca lo dovresti?

Ugo
Ben lo sai. Già un anno corse
Che ad altr’uom lo promettesti.

Bianca
L’obliai, sì, l’obliai…
Né creduto avrei giammai
Che dovessi in questo istante
Rammentarlo a Bianca tu.
Ah! tu sei d’un’altra amante!
Ah! non dêi celarlo più.

Ugo
Più nol celo. Ah! m’odi… in volto
Qual furore ti scintilla?

Bianca
È sorpresa… ma… t’ascolto.
Ami? chi?… son io tranquilla.

Ugo
No, nol sei: ti sforzi invano.
Sempre ignoto, sempre arcano
Esser debbe a te l’oggetto
Che il destin m’impose amar.
Ah! ti basti che d’affetto
Non potrei giammai cambiar.

SCENA QUATTORDICESIMA
Odesi tumulto. Esce Adelia frettolosa e detti.

Adelia
(da lontano)
Ugo!

Ugo
Ciel!

Bianca
Che veggio?

Adelia
(Bianca!)

Bianca
Che ti guida?

Ugo
(Incauta!)

Bianca
Tremi?

Adelia
Tutto è in armi… (Il cor mi manca.)
Si combatte…

Bianca
E per chi temi?

Un momento di silenzio. Bianca li osserva ambedue: indi afferra Adelia per un braccio.

Fissa i tuoi negli occhi miei…
Parla il vero, il voglio, il dêi.
Ami… Ugo!

Adelia
Oh, Bianca!

Bianca
L’ami…
Il tuo volto assai parlò.

Adelia
Ah! sorella!…

Bianca
Tal me chiami!

Adelia
Deh! perdona.

Bianca
Fuggi.

Adelia
Ah! no.

Adelia è inginocchiata a’ piedi di Bianca. Ella è immobile. Ugo è agitatissimo.

Adelia
Io l’amai dal dì fatale
Che tal fiamma in te s’accese.
Non credea d’aver rivale…
Oggi sol mi fu palese…
Non parlai… ne piansi e piango…
Né tremai, né tremo ancor…
Me d’amarlo io non rimango…
Più di tutto è forte amor.

Ugo
Bianca, omai conosci il vero:
Ella il disse, ed io l’affermo.
Or s’acqueti il suo pensiero,
Or provvedi al core infermo.
Rassicura un re che t’ama,
Che men rea ti tiene ancor.
Tu lo devi alla tua fama,
Alla Francia ed all’onor.

Bianca
Questo pianto che m’inonda
Vien dal core, ed io nol freno…
Ei vi dica se è profonda
La ferita che ho nel seno,
Ei vi dica se speranza
Di sanarlo io nutro ancor…
Quella, ah! quella sol m’avanza
Che fia vostro il mio dolor.
(risolutamente per condur seco Adelia)
Vieni!

Ugo
Arresta! Ove la guidi?

Bianca
Dove? Meco!

Adelia
Ah! lassa!

Bianca e Adelia
M’odi.

Rumore di dentro più vicino di prima.

Voci
Ugo viva!

Bianca, Adelia e Ugo
Oh! ciel! Quai gridi!

Voci
Si difenda! Ardire, o prodi.

SCENA QUINDICESIMA
Cavalieri francesi, soldati e detti.

Coro
Noi siam teco: ogni alma è accesa
Dell’amor di tua difesa,
Sacro voto i prodi han fatto
Di salvarti o di perir.

Ugo
(prendendo Adelia)
Vieni.

Bianca
Ed osi?…

Ugo
Il brando è tratto.

Adelia
Lassa!

Bianca
E vuoi?

Ugo
Da te fuggir.

Ugo
Tu mi spingi a passo estremo…
M’armi tu d’iniqua spada…
Ma più te, che infamia io temo…
Lei si salvi… il mondo cada…
Ah! di te, di me, di lei
Ria memoria resterà.

Bianca
Mira e trema: a ciglio asciutto
L’onta mia soffrir poss’io…
Ma capace è un cor di tutto
Chiuso al pianto al par del mio…
Fuor di Francia ancor non sei,
La mia man ti giungerà…

Adelia
Ah! che invan sì rio cimento
Impedir, o ciel, tentai.
Il terribile momento,
Me infelice, io ne affrettai!…
Ah! troncare i giorni miei,
Me svenar saria pietà.

Coro
Vieni, affretta: incontro ai rei
Fuor che il campo asil non ha.

ATTO SECONDO

Appartamenti reali.

SCENA PRIMA
La musica esprime lontano fragor di battaglia. Entrano sbigottite le dame e le ancelle.

Coro
Il suon dell’armi più forte echeggia…
Valido schermo oppon la reggia
Contro il feroce assalitor.
Ah, quando tregua avran gli sdegni?
Non fia che pace mai più qui regni
Se fin di guerra è causa amor.

SCENA SECONDA
Emma, Luigi, indi coro di cavalieri.

Luigi
Lasciami… il sen materno
È vile usbergo a un re.

Emma
No, non ti lascio,
Teco son io. D’Ugo io non temo il ferro…
D’altri nemici io tremo. Oh, figlio mio!
Il tradimento ti uccideva il padre.

Luigi
È a me serbato il suo destino, o madre.
Funesto dono io m’ebbi,
Funesto dono in Bianca.

Emma
E dal tuo fianco
Voll’io scostarla. Il mio voler fu vano…
Credesti a Folco. Ah! tolga il ciel che un giorno
Non ti sia più funesto il suo consiglio.

Luigi
(ai cavalieri che entrano)
Che fia? Vinti siam noi?

Coro
Cessò il periglio,
Scampo ne vien concesso
D’onde si attese meno…
Il tuo nemico stesso
Tenne i ribelli a freno…
Tutti deposte han l’armi,
E solo ei move a te.
Miralo.

Tutti
È desso.

SCENA TERZA
Ugo, indi Adelia fra guerrieri e detti.

Ugo
O re! vengo a scolparmi.
Io né di Bianca al core,
Né al regal seggio aspiro: al tuo cospetto
La donna io guido ch’io sceglieva in pria
Che la sua man concessa
Mi avessi tu. Vedila.

Luigi e Coro
Adelia!

Adelia
Io stessa.
Dell’innocenza sua mallevadrice
A te ne vengo. Ai prieghi miei soltanto
D’amarmi ei tacque, ed a tacer ne astrinse
Timor di Bianca.

Ugo
Dall’irata suora
Salvala or tu. Nelle materne braccia
Fa’ che ritorni illesa; ove sospetto
Di me ti resti, e prigionier mi vogli,
Io depongo l’acciaro.

Luigi
Ah! lo ritogli.
Prova mi dai, lo sento,
Che il mio sospetto sgombra:
Pure a fugarne ogni ombra
Vieni all’altar con me.
Sacro e solenne rito
Consacri il giuramento
Ch’io non sarò tradito,
Ch’ella fia sposa a te.

Ugo
Io tel prometto.

Luigi
Abbracciami.

Emma e Adelia
Oh! gioia!

Coro
Oh! dì beato!

Adelia
Un prego sol consentami,
Sire, il tuo cor placato…
Bianca…

Luigi
Ai materni lidi
Fido drappel la guidi.
Dagli occhi miei lontana
Al nuovo dì ne andrà.

Coro
Lo meritò l’insana…
Stancò la tua bontà.

Luigi
Quanto mi costi a svellere
Lo stral che m’ha ferito,
Quanto mi resti a gemere
Solo quest’alma il sa.
Un dì vedrà la barbara
Quale sdegnò marito;
Ed il suo cor medesimo
Vindice mio sarà.

Tutti
L’offese tue dimentica,
I suoi furori oblia.
Non ella al paro immemore
Di tue virtù vivrà.
Vieni: ed il ben de’ popoli
Piena mercé ti sia;
Mille avrai cor che t’amino,
Se amarti il suo non sa.

SCENA QUARTA
Vestibolo che mette a domestico oratorio: alcuni monumenti qui e là per la scena. È notte. Bianca e Folco.

Bianca
Fino all’aurora!

Folco
Questa notte sola
A noi vien data…

Bianca
Essi non san che lunga…
Lunga è una notte a Bianca.

Folco
Il tempo vola
Ratto come il pensier. Al sacro rito
Già pronta è l’ara. Ad impedir tai nozze
Hai mezzo tu?

Bianca
Mezzo a spezzarle!

Folco
Ahi! quale?

Bianca
Nol ricercar. Fatale,
Irreparabil fia.

Folco
Folle! e tu speri
Nel ferro forse?

Bianca
Altro non v’ha che il ferro
Alla vendetta?

Folco
Di velen perìa
Lotario qui.

Bianca
Soli siam noi? d’appresso
Alcun rumore intendi?

Folco
È sgombro il loco.

Bianca
Ritratti or tu… teco mi avrai fra poco.

Folco parte.

SCENA QUINTA
Bianca sola.

Bianca
Sì, mia vendetta è posta
In questa gemma… il fatal vaso è pronto,
Pronto il liquor… compia fortuna il resto.
Vadasi. A che m’arresto?
Chi al suol m’affigge? Il ciel si turba… e sembra
Colla voce del tuono
Empio gridarmi. Ah! più infelice io sono.
Sì… più infelice… io nata
Al misfatto non era… E core, e mente,
E quanto è in me, tutto mutò l’insana

SCENA SESTA
Emma nell’oratorio e detta.

Emma
Perdono, o ciel!…

Bianca
Qual voce!

Emma
L’eterno mio rimorso
Disarmi il tuo rigor.

Bianca
Emma! ella geme.

Emma
Un lustro intiero è corso
Né a me risplende ancor raggio di speme.
I dì consumo in pianto,
Le notti nel terror…

Bianca
(inorridita)
Mi reggo appena…

Emma
Dell’error mio soltanto
È frutto infamia e orror.

Bianca
(con un grido di dolore)
Oh, angoscia! Oh, pena!
Ah! se alla mia vendetta
Serbi tal frutto, o Dio,
Tuona sul capo mio,
O in sen mi cambia il cor.

Tuona più forte. Bianca è nella massima desolazione.

SCENA SETTIMA
Emma in scena e detta.

Emma
(da lontano)
Oh! chi si duole?
Bianca!

Bianca
Ah! vieni… ascoltai le tue parole.

Emma
Tu? che ascoltasti?… ah! misera!

Bianca
Tutto, sì, tutto…

Emma
Oh, cielo!

Bianca
Contro di me difendimi…
Tento un delitto.

Emma
Io gelo.

Bianca
Perch’io non l’abbia a compiere
Mostrami il tuo dolor.

Emma
Ah! tutto il mira, ah! tutto
Vedi il mio strazio e il lutto…
E se ti regge l’anima
Brama vendetta ancor.

Bianca
Nelle tue braccia stringimi…
Pietà di me ti prenda:
Una di queste lagrime,
Una su me discenda,
Che la vorace spengami
Fiamma, che avvampa in cor.

Emma
Vieni, infelice, e calmati,
Mesci il tuo pianto al mio.

Odesi lieta musica. L’oratorio è illuminato.

Bianca
Il rito!… il rito!… Scostati,
Fuori di me son io.

Coro
(lontano)
Splendi, o favor celeste,
Propizio al rito splendi;
Benigno il guardo a queste
Nozze felici intendi;
Pronuba al nodo invia
Aura d’eterno amor.

Bianca
Giammai, giammai…
Rinasce il mio furor…

Emma
Arresta.

Bianca
È vano.

Emma
Arresta, o sciagurata.
A me guerrieri… a me!…

SCENA OTTAVA e Ultima
Luigi, Adelia, Ugo, cavalieri, dame, soldati tutti accorrendo.

Bianca
Son disperata.

Tutti
Che mai fu?… che avvenne?

Emma
Io tremo.

Tutti
Mute entrambe! sbigottite!

Luigi
Madre!

Ugo e Adelia
Bianca!

Bianca
(Oh! strazio estremo!)

Tutti
Favellate…

Bianca
Ah! sì, m’udite.
Qui tradita, qui reietta,
Meditai, ma invan, vendetta.
Men punisco.
(sugge il veleno dell’anello)

Tutti
Arresta, insana!

Bianca
Pago or sei, destin crudel.

Tutti
Si soccorra.

Bianca
Ogni arte è vana.
Non potria salvarmi il ciel.
(ad Ugo)
Di che amore io t’abbia amato,
Di qual odio io t’odii adesso
Tel palesa un tanto eccesso,
La mia morte, il mio furor.
Spera pure, o core ingrato,
Gioia spera da costei…
Io, morendo, io lascio a lei
E quest’odio e questo amor.
(si abbandona nelle braccia delle ancelle)

Adelia
Bianca!

Ugo
Ahi!… lassa!…

Coro
O ciel placato,
Le perdona un tanto error.

FINE

ACT I

A hall in the palace of Laon. Behind the terrace rises the cupola of the cathedral. On one side a throne and seats below. The hall is ringed with armed men. All suggests a very solemn occasion.

SCENE I
French knights, then Fulk

Chorus
No, there is no pallid star
In the sky of the Carolingians:
It shines still for our king
Clothed in kindly light.
God, who graces your head with the crown
Of unavenged Lothair,
May it be more fortunate for him,
May it ever be defended by you!
(they enter the royal apartments)

Fulk
Vain prayers! From his father
For him is reserved only fate,
He too will be a signal for hatred
Of a haughty and sinful consort.
Hugh in vain, in vain his squadrons
Shield him: wherefore I do not delay:
My fortune will rise
Over their heads.

The acclamations recommence.

SCENE II
Trumpets blare. The royal cortege defiles. Louis between Emma and Hugh. Fulk among the knights. Emma and Louis mount the throne.

Hugh
Princes, counts, knights, and all
Who have till now have counseled me on the battlefield
Wise and heroic companions, the day has come
When I relinquish the august authority
I have exercised in the kingdom for five whole years.
The precious pledge
That a king, the sole issue of the Carolingian heroes, Entrusted to me, now that you are of age,
I return the ancestral throne, to you.

Chorus
Long live Louis the hero,
Seed of our kings.

While the chorus sings these words, Emma takes off the crown and puts it on the head of Louis.

Hugh
Ah! This is the most brilliant day
That the sun has ever smiled on me,
I see the progeny of our kings
Shine on the throne.
There remains nothing more for me to accomplish
Than to win laurels
And to offer them to you with sweat
And blood and continued life.

Louis descends from the throne.

Louis
Yes, to discover the traitor
Who robbed me of a father,
Will be the first and last
Thought of my reign:
To you, Mother, I swear,
To the whole world I swear it.

Hugh
Then let the Moor
And the haughty Norman tremble,
If you become the chief commander
Of our armies.

Louis
Yes, you will have me with you to conquer,
If your wisdom aids me.

Foldo
(Just triumph, the more rapid
Will be your downfall.)

Louis
The heroic knights
Unite for a new day.

All
The banner waves in the wind,
The victorious banner,
Like a comet of terror
That predicted the end of the kings,
And the universe will believe
Charlemagne reborn to us.

The church bells ring.

Hugh
Come to the church, and let a holy hand
Bless the royal crown.

Emma
(I strive in vain to compose myself.)

Louis
(I am now certain of his loyalty.)

All
Come to the church, and heaven invoked
Will smile favorably upon you.
Almighty God, who have sustained
The infant prince through so many evils,
Cover him yet, now grown, now ruling,
With your great wings,
And he will prevail over
Any perfidious assassin, any intrigue.
(all leave)

SCENE III
Blanche alone, then ladies

Blanche
He proceeds to the church . . . and he even thought
Of leading me to the church! I have escaped. Ah! would that I
Could always escape it! I will be able to . . . At least
It will please me to try. Already the plot is hatched.
Come, Sister, now come to my aid,
Ah! When you believed
In happiness in the royal bed,
You did not know that you would become
A victim on that splendid altar;
No, you did no know
That you must weep like this.

Enter the ladies summoned by Blanche

What do you bring me?

Ladies
Adèle
Arrives from Aquitaine.

Blanche
Adèle! Oh joy!

A Lady
(signaling from the terrace)
You can see far off
The noble cortege,
Which has come from the royal palaces
To meet her.

Blanche
No, you did not wish me, O Fate,
To be wholly miserable,
If I am allowed to
Regain my courage.
Fly to my arms, Adèle,
Fly to your desire, O heart.
(goes to meet Adèle; the ladies remain)

SCENE IV
Adèle and Blanche

Blanche
All leave.

The ladies leave.

I must speake to you
Before he returns.

Adèle
And did you not follow
The groom to the church?

Blanche
Only a fiancé . . . and I give thanks
To heaven. Another husband, O Blanche,
Another love I wanted.

Adèle
Oh! What are you saying? Then did you call me
From Aquitaine, O Sister,
Only as a spectator of rancor and hatred?

Blanche
I call upon you to release me from the abhorred bonds . . .
Do not reply. I am miserable . . . I want to flee
This court, and let an invitation brought by you
From our ailing mother be a pretext for me.

Adèle
But such a planned deception
Will not be through me.

Blanche
You prevent a horrendous sin.
If I remain here I shall be guilty of it.

Adèle
What do you mean?

Blanche
I hate Louis . . . and I hate
His mother . . . haughty and cowardly both,
Devoid of every virtue. He whom I wish to love . . .
Is here a crime to love.

Adèle
Heavens! And so you burn
With love . . . and for a forbidden object?

Blanche
Yes, in my mind, in my heart
I have all the furies of love . . . One point only,
One single point defeats me; and it was that day
When, engaged to the king, Hugh came to my lodgings
To collect me.

Adèle
(with surprise)
Hugh! (Great God! . . . what do I hear?)

Blanche
Have compassion for me, Sister . . . He has captured my heart.
I have seen him . . . Ah! Who does not love him
If she see him but a single instant?
The splendor of his fame
Enhances his person . . .
I have seen him . . . I remained rapt
In the pleasure that arose in me.
That moment seemed to me
The first dawning of my life.

Adèle
Unlucky girl!

Blanche
Ah! Yes, that I am.

Adèle
And did you not try?

Blanche
Everyting, and in vain.

Adèle
Ah! If the arrow is planted in the heart
No human skill can dislodge it . . .
Ah! The doe carries it with her
Bleeding wherever she goes.
No matter whither you flee with me,
Your love will follow you.

Blanche
You are heartless! Will you rob me
Of all hope in this way?

Adellia
No . . . let us weep . . . let us suffer together,
You will not be separated from me.

Blanche
Dear Adèle, support me,
and let me still hope . . .

Adèle
Hope . . . hope . . . (let the turmoil
Of my heart be hidden.)

Blanche and Adèle
There on my native soil,
In a mother’s embrace,
I shall have at least
Sad freedom to mourn.
Perhaps my grief will end . . .
Perhaps I shall be healed . . .
Or this wound of mine
Will flood the earth.

Adèle
Yes, let us return to the shade
Of our maternal walls:
There we will breathe
A gentler and purer air.
Perhaps we shall see the dawn
Dispel the clouds;
One day we shall again be joyful
As in our early years.
(about to leave)

SCENE V
Louis, Fulk and the above.

Louis
Blanche! . . . You flee from me? You must
Finally hear me.

Blanche
And I wish to. Sad necessity
Guides me to you.

Louis
Does gladness
Perhaps ever guide you? Always cloudy and mute
You approach me. A whole year has passed
That I seek in vain a smile from you.

Blanche
A mysterious affliction of grief
Has grown in me .. . and it is increasing
Now that my mother, ailing and surrounded by Normans,
Sends my sister on a long and arduous journey
As ambassador to me.

Adèle
Sire . . . Our oppressed mother
Begs to be able to clasp to her breast one last time
This first pledge of her love.

Bianca
I shall depart
At first light: any delay weighs heavily
On my trembling heart.

Louis
You will stay.

Blanche
I! I will stay!

Louis
Yes . . .

Blanche
By what law?

Louis
You know it.

Fulk
(to Louis)
(Control yourself.)

Blanche
(This is an outrage;
Bitter outrage.)

Adèle
(to Blanche)
(Alas! His ire is stirred.)

Fulk
(as before)
(You must dissemble.)

Blanche
(to Louis)
Oh! How quickly
You have learned the manners of kings!
Whence such arrogance?
By what right do you give orders?

Louis
By what right!

Fulk
(Do not reveal yourself!)

Louis
(calmly)
By the right of love.

Blanche
I take it away from you, if it can make you
So unjust and insulting.

Louis
Blanche, tell me: do you no longer remember
That the altar is bedecked with flowers for us?
That we still must utter
The solemn oaths?
Do you not remember?

Adèle
(Oh! An ugly quarrel!)

Blanche
Now I remember only my mother.

Louis
Let us hasten the holy rite.
Let it be done before sunset;
And I myself will conduct
You to the maternal breast.

Blanche
(Oh! Torment! Oh! Brutal torture!
He with me forever! Ah! Die first.
Before that I will invoke the fires of hell
To the altar.)

Adèle
(For pity’s sake do not betray yourself . . .
Ah! Acquiesce to his desire . . .
In his face I see well
That suspicion has entered his heart.)

Louis
(She trembles, and still she tries vainly
To dissemble her guilty looks . . .
The day has come when I do not want to see
Any more games and mockery from her.)

Fulk
(She trembles, and still she tries vainly
To dissemble her guilty looks . . .
The day has come when I do not want to see
Any more games and mockery from her.)

Louis
Blanche! Answer!

Adèle
(Sister, I tremble)

Blanche
Mother is near her final hour
With tears in her eyes, with anguish in her heart
Blanche refuses to go to the altar.

Luigi
(exclaiming)
And add to that, blind with another love,
Do not dare profane the church.

Adèle
Heavens! What are you saying?

Louis
Oh! My fury!

Blanche
You insult me!

Louis
You merit it.

Adellia
(What to say? What do do?)

Blanche
Have you thought well on these words,
Do you know what soul, what heart you attack?
An ardent soul, a heart inflamed
With immense loathing, with immense love.
From this moment arises between us
An eternal barrier of hatred and rage.

Louis
That heart I know; I know its secrets . . .
I read its motives, its insane affections . . .
It has destroyed my every hope,
It has betrayed faith and honor.
But may the vengeance that quakes in my breast
Be delayed by your terror.

Adèle
Oh! Stop . . . Oh! Calm yourself . . .
Hide such shame from our mother . . .

Fulk
(Let not this day, so dear to a kingdom,
End in quarreling and shame.)

Adèle
(Come, poor girl, flee your loathing . . .
Leave your heart time to calm itself.)

Adèle pulls Blanche with her. Fulk and Louis exit on opposite sides..

SCENE VI
An atrium. Hugh surrounded by French knights

Chorus
Beware. Such blind security
May prove fatal to you;
The abyss lies at your feet:
Think of retreating.

Hugh
What can the arts of insane jealousy do?

Chorus
More than the declared enemy
I fear the traitor.
You know not yet
What Falco may be.

Hugh
Let my virtue be my solid shield.
Do not fear where I do not fear,
The son of Lothair is just:
He owes all to my arm,
To my counsel, and well he knows it.
If he could yet forget that . . .
If he were to put his faith in another . . .
My heart, content with itself,
Will never nurse hatred . . .
It will not see my glory
Obscured in a single moment.

Chorus
You are generous! May heaven grant
That things appear more clearly now,
And let not misfortune be the reward
Of such pure loyalty.

Hugh
Ah! Let fortune take back
Whatever favor it has placed in me.
If not great, at least Hugh
Will still be loved on earth . . .
Dear Adèle, whatever my state
Your heart will stay with me.

The knights dismissed by Hugh withdraw.

SCENE VII
Adèle and Hugh.

Hugh
What do I see? Adèle! . . . Oh, joy!
You, within these walls!

Adèle
I arrive unexpectedly.
Speak softly.

Hugh
Beyond all my hope
I see you again! And you wish me
To put a brake on my happiness?

Adèle
(Oh, whatever shall I say to him?)

Hugh
And whence
So much fear? Why are you silent and fixing
Your eyes on the ground?

Adèle
I am not, Hugh,
In my mother’s home. My mother is ill, and my native land
Is beset by a brutal siege.

Hugh
Rumor has spread
Of the unfortunate war: and I have been preparing
To bring you aid, and was speeding to deserve
Your hand as victor over your enemies.

Adèle
Ah! Never ask that.

Hugh
Heavens! What are you saying?

Adèle
I have said too much . . .

Hugh
Speak . . .
What mystery are you keeping from me? Is there someone else
Competing for your heart? Perhaps your proud sister
Opposes our wishes?

Adèle
Ah! Do not think that . . . the have always been unknown to her.

Hugh
She will know. I want to reveal them,
I want to win you from her.

Adèle
Ah! Never . . .

Hugh
Never . . . what talk is this?

Adèle
You do not know . . . You must not speak.

Hugh
Perhaps Blanche holds me unworthy
Of your hand because I do not rule?
Perhaps you, even you are seduced
By the splendor of a crown.

Adèle
Ah! You shine with a splendor
Much dearer to a noble heart.

Hugh
This arm, this steel
Has sustained more than one throne.
Bianca knows that it can have
But one equal, and offer it as a gift.
More than a crown I disdain
To obtain for myself . . .
If you have beauty in your heart,
I can obtain it for you.

Adèle
Ah! I could no longer
Worship you and have you in my prayers:
Your glory in my eyes
Obscures all kingly crowns.
Your heart only I loved,
Your heart that has no equal . . .
Ah! The faith I swore to you
I would not have sworn to a king.

Hugh
Then speake: reassure
My doubting, uncertain soul . . .

Adèle
Know this . . . Ah! No . . . my ill luck
Must never, ever be discovered.

Hugh
Speak! I conjure you
By honor and by faith.

Adèle
Do you swear to keep silent?

Hugh
I swear to everything . . .

SCENE VIII
Chorus of ladies and the above

Chorus
Blanche comes looking for you.

Adèle
If you love me . . . If the terror
That chills my breast moves you . . .
Keep quiet . . . go . . . withdraw elsewhere . . .
Hide from her for an while,
You will know my secret,
I shall open my heart to you.
Ah! The idea that I was yours
That I shall die yours makes you happy.

Hugh
That I leave you in this state!
That I remove myself from your sight!
You do not know what doubt
Has arisen in my mind, what suspicion in my heart . . .
Your secret threatens me,
If you cannot reveal it to me . . .
Ah! I shall nevermore be calm and joyful,
Nor ever secure.
(Hugh leaves)

SCENE IX
Adèle and Blanche.

Adèle
You pursue me?

Blanche
You abandon me at this
Dreadful time?

Adèle
Your grief is my own . . .
And perhaps even more bitter . . . Oh, my sister!
What will you do?

Blanche
Louis’ zealous obsession has reached
A peak. He has forbidden me
To stray a step from the palace. Is there no
Knight here who would undertake to free me?
I hasten to Hugh.
(starting to go)

Adèle
Ah! Stay.

Blanche
Let him defend me.

Adèle
You will lose him and yourself . . .
You rush to a precipice . . .

Blanche
I have been drawn here . . .
Destiny impels me.

Adèle
I hold you fast . . .
You shall not escape these arms, foolish girl.

Blanche
Stand away: someone comes.

SCENE X
Louis, Fulk, knights, ladies and the above.

Louis
Blanche! Hear me.
My heart is now heavy
With our discord. However much I love you,
In spite of my love, I would give you up, rather
Than force a bond odious to your heart.
But reason of state,
A higher reason orders it,
And it is not in my power to dissolve it by my will.

Fulk
(What ever will she say?)

Adèle
(Merciful heaven,
Inspire her!)

Chorus
We all beg you
To calm this wrath.

Fulk
What about the king offends you?
Speak truly!

Blanche
Can a woman suspected
Ever without shame be united
With one who nurses supicion? Can she hope for peace
With one who casts a shadow over all?

Louis
Then clear up the suspicion.

Blanche
It would now be in vain.

Louis
In vain
It cannot be, I swear it, if you consent to stay,
If you come to the church.

Blanche
I am beset with worry . . . as I have said . . .
For my mother.

Louis
And a return to her
Is my very intention . . . and you will have definite proof.
Let Hugh come to me.

Blanche and Adèle
(Oh! Heaven! Hugh!)

Chorus
He approaches!

Scene XI
Hugh and the above

Louis
The normans threaten
The Kingdom of Aquitaine, and the failing queen
Has requested immediate aid.
To your steadfast fidelity,
To your wisdom, to your arm, Hugh, I commit
This glorious enterprise.

Hugh
And I accept it.

Louis
When the path to Aquitaine
Is clear and free,
Tell her that I myself
Will assume a most welcome mission,
That of taking this lady
Safely to her,
Which fateful necessity forbids
Me to accomplish now.

Blanche
(I shudder.)

Fulk
(She is fretful.)

Adèle
(I tremble.)

Hugh
(Such a tremor Adèle has!)

Blanche
And alone and a widow
Still without a daughter at her side . . .
Shall my mother remain?

Louis
Your sister will go to her.

Blanche
She will go!

Adèle
(Contain yourself.)

Blanche
Go without me?

Fulk
(She reveals herself.)

Hugh
Do you perhaps
Have doubts about Hugo? Speak!

Louis
Adèle putting faith in him,
He is to plight faith to her as husband.

Blanche
As husband!

Adèle
(Oh heaven!)

Hugh
(What do I hear?)

Fulk
Not yet a year has passed
Since her departed father
Chose him as a son-in-law.

Louis
And I am ready
To fulfill his wish

Blanche
You! When?

Louis
This very day.
I command him.

Hugh
And I?

Blanche
First . . . you must,
If you are a knight,
Depart, do battle and return
The savior of a kingdom.

Hugh
Adèle!

Adèle
Did you hear?

Fulk
(to Louis)
(Continue feigning
A little more.)

All conversing secretly

Adèle
(to Hugo)
The terrible dreaded moment has come . . .
If you have a magnanimous heart, state your refusal,
Hide your love, heed my words . . .
If you insist, if you accept, you yourself. . . are lost along with me.

Hugh
(to Adèle)
Oh! What a dilemma you put in my mind!
What do you fear? Why trembling? What danger do you see?
I am not used to concealing the affections of my heart,
I want them revealed: they are worthy of you.

Blanche
(What do I think? What do I ponder? What a rude suspicion:
What fury, what demon raises it in my breast?
Let it begone: it is ghastly: it fills me with terror.
It is the delirium of a heart that is hysterical.)

Louis
(to Fulk)
What heart can comprehend the distress I feel?
I want to expose the perfidious woman, I fear to expose her:
To tear off the blindfold, rend the veil,
Your zeal renders me grim service.

Fulk
(to Louis)
Calm yourself, dissemble: by proof you will know
That you have been too credulous with these traitors.
The certain salvation of the king depends
On your seeing the truth, on this unmasking.

Louis
Hugh! Did you hear?

Hugh
I heard.

Louis
I thought you would be
More grateful for such a favor.

Hugh
Grateful, I am, yes . . .

Adèle
(interrupting him)
Not I. My heart
Will be given only by me.

Blanche
(I breathe.)

Louis
And I ask it of you
In Hugh’s name: and I believe . . .

Blanche
You have no power over her heart . . .

Hugh
Nor do I wish to force her heart.

Louis
You reject her.

Hugh
I must.

Louis
You must?
(exclaiming)
Traitors! Now I have caught you.

All
What a thing to say!

Louis
Now is revealed
The impious flame that you feed.

Hugh
I! What do I hear?

Adèle
(Woe is me!)

Hugh
I!

Louis
(to the guards)
Yes. Arrest him.

All
What ever are you doing?

Hugh
What outrage is this?
You dare to insult me?
You have the gall to expose me to such shame,
Dare to impute such a crime to me?
Who accuses me?

Louis
(pointing to Blanche)
That pallor,
That terror denounces you.

All
(Just heaven!)

Blanche
(Oh, my fury!)

Hugh
(Ah! What a veil has been torn from me!)

Blanche
Yes, arrogant boy . . . hear the truth.
I love him . . .

Adèle
Ah! Hush . . .

Blanche
I repeat it.
I love him, yes: but never once
Have I revealed my secret to him . . .
He never knew it; heaven is my witness . . .
If there is offense, it is all mine.

Louis
Liar!

Chorus
(Oh! Baleful day.)

Louis
You defend yourself poorly.

Hugh
Hear me, O king!
Everyone knows, you know yourself,
Of what temper is Hugh’s heart,
Whether it could ever lie
To deceive or from fear.
I swear, O king, on my honor:
My thoughts are turned to another.

All
Reveal her.

Hugh
(seeing Adèle’s fear)
I cannot.

Blanche
(Turned to another!)

Louis
Liar!

Blanche
(to Hugh)
Do not lie: reveal the truth . . .
I have shown you the example . . .
I would be able to defy the wrath
Of all the world for you.
In vain you think by thus feigning
To change my mind.
There is nothing more terrible
For me than doubt.

Hugh
(to Blanche)
Unfortunate woman! Ah! You know not
What wound you have inflicted!
You should never have dared,
Cruel one, to speak!
Let the consternation of France,
My own shame and yours suffice.
I could not accuse you
Of anything more tragic and bitter.

Louis
(to Blanche)
Madwoman! The truth is clear:
Yes, however vainly it hides itself.
With other sins and other offenses
I must reproach you.
My throne is undermined,
My peace of mind is shattered . . .
But do not hope, guilty pair,
That I will remain unavenged.

Adèle
Cease . . . depart . . . Ah! Let there not be
A scene still more tragic for the kingdom . . .
Would that I were dead, Ah, dead before
Abandoning my mother!

Fulk
Come, Sire: withdraw:
Their perfidy you have abundantly witnessed . . .
We shall know to punish, to put an end
To this audacious, mad couple.

Chorus
(Ah! Heaven is still not at peace
With this unfortunate kingdom.
Ah! The terrible fate of the father
Goes on to threaten the son.)

Fulk
Give me your sword.

Hugh
(draws his sword)
I give it to you.

Fulk
(I begin to triumph.)

All leave. Hugh is led away under guard.

SCENE XII
A prison where Hugh is confined. Hugh alone

Hugh
Now here I breathe the air of death!
Yet dear to me is the memory that Adèle
Sighed of love for me . . .
Ah! Ever present to me in this place
Is the day when my lips
Tremblingly proffered to her my final farewell;
She pressed my hand and grief did not permit
Her to utter a single sentence:
But oppressed by her torment
Turned all her words into a sigh.

I kept silent then, I forsook her . . .
And my dearest, my idol
As she turned back,
Stopped me, and calling out
Exclaimed sighing,
“Unhappy is this heart!”
Dear Adèle, my idol,
Unhappy is this heart.
But at last some god will take pity
On so much unjust suffering,
I shall return as before, but Adelila
May no longer be mine!

If Fate compels you
To another love,
I shall not disturb
Your fair days.
But at least I shall say
He who loved you
Nurtured virtue,
Preserved honor;
And with my death
Forcefully
I will know how to save
Him who betrayed me.

Who is there?

SCENE XIII
Blanche and the above.

Blanche
Blanche!

Hugh
You!

Blanche
You must be shocked?
Blanche does not sleep. We have arrived where
Neither bars nor prison walls nor irons
Can ever divide us.

Hugh
Oh! What are you saying?
We are divided forever.

Blanche
We are united . . .
United, yes, do not fear. Here Blanche
Rules more than Louis; I will free you of your chains,
And soon: and we shall command
A war to the death against my enemies and yours.

Hugh
I should become a rebel? You can say this to me?
France will not see me
With this stain on my brow.

Blanche
And I would have it
Perhaps less, if our triumph
Were less certain! Or, if you wish, let your sword
Remain unused and we shall turn our backs
On these evil walls, if that is better, as fugitives.
Come: my lands will afford
Secure refuge. The Kingdom of Aquitaine
Is yours from this moment.

Hugh
A kingdom, O Blanche . . .
I do not usurp a kingdom . . . I defend it.

Blanche
Love gives it to you.

Hugh
Give it to someone else.

Blanche
What do you mean?
Do you disdain it? Speak . . . perhaps
Because you would owe it to Blanche?

Hugh
You know well. It has been a year now
That you have promised it to another man.

Blanche
I have forgotten him, yes, I have forgotten him . . .
And I never would have thought
That in a moment like this
You would remind Blanche of him.
Ah! You are in love with another!
Ah! You may conceal it no longer.

Hugh
I no longer conceal it. Ah! Listen to me . . .
How your face flashes with fury.

Blanche
It is a surprise . . . but . . . I’m listening.
You are in love? With whom? I am calm.

Hugh
No, you are not: you force yourself in vain.
The object that destiny
Has compelled me to love
Must remain forever unknown, forever a secret.
Ah! Let it suffice that I could never
Change my affection.

Scene XIV
A tumult is heard. Adèle enters in haste and the above.

Adèle
(from offstage)
Hugh!

Hugh
Heaven!

Blanche
What do I see?

Adèle
(Blanche!)

Bianca
What brings you here?

Hugh
(Reckless woman!)

Blanche
You are trembling?

Adèle
They are in arms everywhere . . . (my heart is faint)
They are fighting . . .

Blanche
And for whom do you fear?

A moment of silence. Blanche observes the two of them: then she takes Adèle by the arm.

Look me in the eyes . . .
Speak the truth, I want it, you must.
You love . . . Hugh!

Adèle
Oh, Blanche!

Blanche
You love him . . .
Your face says as much.

Adèle
Ah! Sister! . . .

Blanche
You call me that!

Adèle
Oh! Forgive me.

Blanche
Begone.

Adèle
Ah! No.

Adèle is kneeling at Blanche’s feet. Blanche is motionless. Hugh is extremely agitated.

Adèle
I have loved him since the fatal day
When a like flame ignited in you.
I did not think I had a rival . . .
Only today did it become clear to me . . .
I did not speak . . . I wept and still weep . . .
And I did not tremble, nor yet do I tremble . . .
I shall not cease to love him . . .
Love is stronger than anything.

Hugh
Blanche, now you know the truth:
She has said it, and I affirm it.
Now calm your mind,
Now care for your wounded heart.
Reassure a king that loves you,
Who still holds you less guilty.
You owe it to your reputation,
To France and to honor.

Blanche
This grief that floods me
Comes from the heart and I cannot halt it . . .
Let him tell you if the wound
That I have in my breast is deep,
Let him tell you whether I still nurse
Hope of healing it . . .
That hope, ah!, that alone consoles me
That my grief may be yours.
(determined to take Adèle with her)
Come!

Hugh
Stop! Where are you taking her?

Blanche
Where? With me!

Adèle
Let me go!

Blanche and Adelila
Listen to me.

A noise from within, nearer than before.

Voices
Long live Hugh!

Blanche, Adèle and Hugh
Oh! Heaven! What cries are these!

Voices
To the defense! Be bold, valiant warriors.

SCENE XV
French knights, soldiers and the above.

Chorus
We are with you: every soul is aflame
With love for your defense,
The warriors have taken a sacred vow
To save you or perish.

Hugh
(taking Adèle)
Come.

Blanche
You dare?

Hugh
The sword is drawn.

Adèle
Let me go!

Blanche
What do you want?

Hugh
To get away from you.

Hugh
You push me to an extreme pass . . .
You arm me with a wicked sword . . .
But I fear you more than infamy . . .
Let her save herself . . . Let the world collapse . . .
Ah! Of you, of me, of her
A bitter memory will remain.

Blanche
Look and tremble: I can suffer my shame
With a dry eye . . .
But a heart impervious to grief like mine
Is capable of anything . . .
You are not yet out of France,
My hand will reach you . . .

Adèle
Ah! You have tried in vain,
Oh heaven, to prevent such an ugly conflict.
The terrible moment
I, to my woe, have hastened!
Ah! It would be a mercy to cut short
My life, to slay me.

Chorus
Come, make haste: against the evil ones
There is no refuge outside the battlefield.

ACT II

The royal apartments.

SCENE I
The music expresses the distant clash of arms. The ladies and the ladies in waiting enter in dismay.

Chorus
The sound of arms echoes more loudly . . .
A bold squadron defends the palace
Against the fierce attacker.
Ah, when will these enmities find a truce?
Let it not be that peace no more reigns here
If love be the cause of war.

SCENE II
Emma, Luigi, then Chorus of Knights.

Louis
Leave me . . . the maternal breast
Is a poor armor for a king.

Emma
No, I shall not leave you,
I am with you. I do not fear the sword of Hugh . . .
I tremble at other enemies. Oh, my son!
Betrayal slew your father.

Louis
And his destiny is reserved for me, Mother.
I have gained a fatal gift,
A fatal gift in Blanche.

Emma
And I shall drive her
From your side. My will was vain . . .
You believed in Fulk. Ah! Let heaven allow that
His counsel will not one day be more fatal to you.

Louis
(to the knights who enter)
What is it! Are we defeated?

Chorus
The danger is over,
We were able to escape
To where it was less dangerous . . .
Your enemy himself
Held the rebels in check . . .
All have laid down their arms,
And only he moves against you.
Behold him.

All
It is he.

SCENE III
Hugh, then Adèle with warriors and the above.

Hugh
O king! I come to exculpate myself.
I aspire neither to the heart of Blanche
Nor to the royal seat: I lead before you
The woman I had chosen before
Before you would grant me
Her hand. Here she is.

Louis and Chorus
Adèle!

Adèle
It is I.
I come to you as guarantor
Of his innocence. Only at my bidding
Did he keep silent about his love for me,
And fear of Blanche constrained him to silence.

Hugh
Now you save her
From her angered sister. See she is returned
Unharmed to her mother’s breast; where suspicion
Of me remains in you, and a prisoner you wish me,
I lay down my sword.

Louis
Ah! Take it back.
You give me proofs, I feel it,
That dispel my suspicion:
Indeed, to be rid of any shadow
Come to the altar with me.
Let the holy and solemn rite
Consecrate the oath
That I will not be betrayed,
That she will be espoused to you.

Hugh
I promise.

Louis
Embrace me.

Emma and Adèle
Oh! Joy!

Chorus
Oh! Blessed day!

Adèle
Let your soothed heart
Grant me one single boon . . .
Blanche . . .

Louis
Let a loyal squadron
Conduct her to her maternal shores.
She will go to a new day
Far from my eyes.

Chorus
The madwoman deserved it . . .
She abused your good will.

Louis
However much it pained me to extract
The arrow that wounded me,
How much remains with me to bemoan
Only this soul knows.
One day the cruel woman will see
What a husband she scorned;
And her heart itself
Will be my avenger.

All
Let be her offenses,
Forget her furors.
She will not live at the immemorial level
Of your virtues.
Come: and may the good of the people
Be your ample reward;
You will have a thousand hearts that love you,
Even if hers could not.

SCENE IV
Vestibule leading to the family chapel: some monuments here and there on the stage. It is night. Blanche and Fulk.

Blanche
Until dawn!

Fulk
Only this one night
Has been given us . . .

Blanche
They do not know how long . . .
How long a night is for Blanche.

Fulk
Time flies
Spirited away like thought. The altar is already prepared
For the holy rite. Do you have a way
To forestall this wedding?

Blanche
A way to break it up!

Fulk
Ah! What is that?

Blanche
Do not ask. It will be fatal,
Irreparable.

Fulk
Madness! And you place hope
In arms perhaps?

Blanche
Is there nothing else but arms
For revenge?

Fulk
Lothair died here
Of poison.

Bianc
Are we alone? Do you hear
A noise nearby?

Fulk
The place is deserted.

Blanche
Withdraw now . . . I shall be with you soon.

Fulk leaves.

SCENE V
Blanche alone.

Blanche
Yes, my revenge is placed
In this jewel . . . The fatal vessel is prepared,
Prepared is the liquor . . . Fortune will accomplish the rest.
Let us go. Why do I stop?
Who fixes me to the spot? The heavens are in turmoil . . .
And seem to scream with a voice
Of unholy thunder. Ah! I am most unhappy.
Yes . . . most unhappy . . . I was not
Born to misdeeds . . . my mind and my heart
And whatever is in me, insane jealousy
That gnaws at me and corrodes my heart has changed all.
You should have thundered before,
Scornful heaven . . . Now it is too late . . . and I am a blind
Victim of a savage destiny.
Now let us go.
(resolved to enter the chapel; a groan stops her)

SCENE VI
Emma in the chapel and the above.

Emma
Pardon, O Heaven!

Blanche
What voice is that!

Emma
Let my eternal remorse
Soften your severity.

Blanche
Emma! She moans.

Emma
Five whole years have passed
And still no ray of hope has shone.
I spend my days in weeping,
My nights in terror . . .

Blanche
(horrified)
I must control myself . . .

Emma
The fruit of my error
Is only infamy and horror.

Blanche
(with a cry of pain)
Oh, anguish! Oh, agony!
Ah! If such be the fruit
Of my revenge, O God,
Strike my head with lightning,
Or change the heart in my breast.

The thunder grows louder. Blanche is in the greatest despair.

SCENE VII
Emma and Bianca.

Emma
(from a distance)
Oh! Who laments so?
Blanche!

Blanche
Ah! Come . . . I heard your words.

Emma
You? What did you hear? Ah! Woe is me!

Blanche
All, yes all . . .

Emma
Oh, heaven!

Blanche
Defend me against myself . . .
I am attempting a crime.

Emma
I am chilled.

Blanche
Show me your sorrow
So that I do not have to commit it.

Emma
Ah! Look upon it all, ah, see
All my torture and conflict . . .
And if your spirit moves you,
Then still wish for revenge.

Blanche
Take me in your arms . . .
Be seized with pity for me:
Let one of these tears,
Let one fall on me
To extinguish the ravenous
Flame that blazes in my heart.

Emma
Come, poor woman, and calm yourself,
Mingle your tears with mine.

Gay music is heard. The chapel is lit up.

Blanche
The rite! . . . the rite! . . . Away from me,
I am beside myself.

Chorus
(within)
Shine, O heavenly favor,
Shine blessings on the rite;
Look kindly on this
Happy wedding;
Send to the bond
A propitious breeze of eternal love.

Blanche
Never, never . . .
My fury revives . . .

Emma
Stop.

Blanche
It’s no use.

Emma
Stop, O unfortunate woman.
Here, guards . . . come here!

SCENE VIII and the Last
Louis, Adèle, Hugh, knights, ladies, and soldiers rush in.

Blanche
I am in despair.

All
What was this? What happened?

Emma
I tremble.

All
Both are mute! In shock!

Louis
Mother!

Hugh and Adèle
Blanche!

Blanche
(Oh! Extreme torment!)

All
Tell us . . .

Blanche
Ah! Yes, listen.
Here betrayed, rejected,
I plotted revenge, but in vain.
I punish myself.
(sucks the poison from the ring)

All
Stop, madwoman!

Bianco
Now you are repaid, cruel Fate.

All
Bring help.

Blanche
No art can help me.
Heaven could not save me.
(to Hugh)
With what love I loved you,
With what hatred I now hate you
Is revealed in all its excess
By my death and my fury.
Only hope, of ungrateful heart,
Hope for joy from her . . .
I, dying, leave her to you
And this hatred and this love.
(faints into the arms of the handmaidens)

Adèle
Blanche!

Hugh
Alas! . . . let her be!

Chorus
Oh heaven placated,
Forgive her such a great sin.
