La favorite (1840)

The More I learn, the Less I Know

La favorite (1840)

Grand Opera in Four Acts
Libretto by Alphonse Royer and Gustave Vaëz

A revision of L’ange de Nisida, composed in 1839 but not performed.

This audio recording, with Abbado and a great cast, is, I think, the best French version on YouTube. You may want to check out the video postings, but I find them unsatisfactory.

ACTE PREMIER

No. 1 Choeur, Cavatine et Duo

[Choeur]
Choeur des Religieux
Pieux monastère,
De ton sanctuaire
Que notre prière
Monte vers les cieux!
Dans cette chapelle,
Guidé par ton zèle,
Pèlerin fidèle,
Viens offrir tes voeux.

Balthazar
Ne vas-tu pas prier avec eux?

Fernand
Je ne puis.

Balthazar
Aurais-je de ton coeur deviné les ennuis?…
Dieu ne te suffit plus.

Fernand
Vous dites vrai, mon père;

Balthazar

[Cavatine]
Un ange, une femme inconnue,
A genoux, priait près de moi,
Et je me sentais à sa vue
Frémir de plaisir et d’effroi.
Ah! Mon père! Qu’elle était belle!
Et contre mon coeur sans secours
C’est Dieu que j’implore… et c’est elle,
C’est elle!… que je vois toujours.
Depuis qu’en lui donnant l’eau sainte,
Ma main a rencontré sa main,
De ces murs franchissant l’enceinte,
Mon coeur rêve un autre destin.
A tous mes serments infidèle,
Et du ciel cherchant le secours,
C’est Dieu que je prie, et c’est elle
Qu’en mon coeur je trouve toujours.

[Récitatif]
Balthazar
Toi, mon fils, ma seule espérance,
L’honneur, le soutien de la foi…
Toi qui devais à ma puissance
Bientôt succéder après moi!
Toi? Toi?

Fernand
(baissant la tête)
Mon père, je l’aime.

Balthazar
(avec douleur)
Sais-tu que devant la thiare
S’abaisse le sceptre des rois?
Que ma main unit ou sépare?
Que l’Espagne tremble à ma voix?

Fernand
Mon père, je l’aime.

Balthazar
Et tu crois
Au bonheur que promet une terrestre flamme!
Dis, sais-tu quelle est cette femme
Qui triomphe de ta vertu?
Celle à qui tu donnes ton âme…
Son nom, son rang… les connais-tu?

Fernand
(avec passion)
Non… mais je l’aime.

[Duo]
Balthazar
Va-t’en, insensé, téméraire!
Va loin de nous porter tes pas,
Et que Dieu, plus que moi sévère,
Que Dieu ne te maudisse pas!

Fernand
Ah! Idole si douce et si chère,
Ô toi qui vois tous mes combats,
Ô toi! Mon seul bien sur la terre,
Veille sur moi, guide mes pas.

Balthazar
Ô mon fils, vont flétrir tes jours;
Parmi les écueils de la vie,
Comprends les dangers que tu cours!
Peut-être, brisé par l’orage,
Tu voudras, pauvre naufragé,
Regagner en vain le rivage
Et le port qui t’ont protégé.

Fernand
(tombant à genoux)
Bénissez-moi, mon père,
Je pars.

[Duo]
Balthazar
Va-t’en, insensé, téméraire!
Vers nous bientôt tu reviendras.
Dans sa justice ou sa colère,
Que Dieu ne te maudisse pas!

Fernand

Inez
Nous que protège sa tendresse,
Esclaves, par nos soins discrets,
De notre belle maîtresse
Sachons payer les bienfaits.

Les jeunes Filles
Oui, sachons payer les bienfaits.

Inez
Silence! Silence!
La mer est belle et l’air est doux.
C’est la nacelle qui s’avance;

No. 3 Air et Choeur

Inez et les jeunes Filles
Doux zéphyr, sois lui fidèle,
Pour conduire sa nacelle
Aux bords où l’amour l’appelle,
A la voile sois léger;

No. 4 Récitatif et Duo

[Récitatif]
Fernand
(s’approchant d’Inez)
Et pourquoi, je t’en prie,
Ta maîtresse si jolie
Persiste-t-elle à me cacher
Son rang, son nom? Quels sont-ils?

Inez
(souriant)
Impossible
De le savoir.

Fernand
Je ne puis t’arracher
Ce secret: il est donc terrible?

Inez

Fernand
Pour mon bonheur!

Léonor
Pour ta perte peut-être!

Fernand
Par pitié, fais-moi connaître
Quel péril pour nous peut naître;
De ton coeur si je suis maître,
Quel malheur craindre ici-bas?

Léonor
Ah! De mon sort que ne suis-je maîtresse!

Fernand
Qui donc es-tu?

Léonor
Ne le demande pas.

Fernand

Fernand
Qu’entends-je,
Ah! Que dit-elle?
O surprise! O terreur!

Léonor
O destinée étrange!
O sort plein de rigueur!

Fernand
Et quel mystère étrange,
D’effroi glace mon coeur ?

Fernand
Je l’ai dit.

Léonor
J’assurais par là ton avenir…
Mais il t’ordonne…

Fernand
Eh! Quoi donc?

Léonor
De me fuir.

Fernand
Jamais!

Fernand
Toi, ma seule amie,
Ne plus te revoir!
T’aimer, c’est ma vie;
Sans toi plus d’espoir
Mon coeur, qui se brise,
Sera froid, mon Dieu!
Avant qu’il te dise
Ce fatal adieu.
Maudit sur la terre,
Hélas! Sous quels cieux
Traîner ma misère?
Où puis-je être heureux?

Léonor
Adieu! Pars! Oublie
Ton rêve et nos voeux;
L’amour qui nous lie
Nous perdrait tous deux.
Mon âme, qui saigne
De mille douleurs,
Se brise et dédaigne
La plainte et les pleurs.
Adieu sur la terre!
Et si jusqu’aux cieux
Parvient ma prière,
Tu dois être heureux!

Scène Sixième
Les mêmes; Inez.

[Récitatif]
Inez
(accourant toute tremblante)
Ah! madame!

Léonor
Qu’est-ce donc?

Inez
C’est le Roi!

Léonor
O! Ciel!

Fernand
(surpris)

Tiens, lis,
Et surtout obéis.
Fuis-moi!

[Duo]
Fernand
Jamais!
Ah, que moi je t’oublie,
Ne plus te revoir!
T’aimer, c’est ma vie;
Sans toi plus d’espoir

Léonor
Mon âme, qui saigne
De mille douleurs,
Se brise et dédaigne
La plainte et les pleurs.
Adieu sur la terre!
Et si jusqu’aux cieux
Parvient ma prière,
Tu dois être heureux!

Fernand
Ah! Maudit sur la terre,
Hélas! Sous quels cieux
Traîner ma misère?
Où puis-je être heureux?

Léonor
Adieu, pars, va, fuis!
Fernand, adieu!

No. 5 Récitatif et Air

Scène Septième
Fernand et Inez.

[Récitatif]
Fernand
(qui a retenu Inez prête à suivre Léonor)
Celui qui vient la chercher…

Inez
Oh! Silence!
C’est le Roi!

Fernand
Je sais tout: son rang, sa naissance,
La rapprochent du trône… et moi!
Moi, malheureux, obscur et sans gloire…

Inez
Prudence!

Moi… Fernand! Capitaine! Et par elle, ô bonheur!

[Air martial]
Oui, ta voix m’inspire,
Et sous ton empire,
Un double délire
M’exalte en ce jour;
A toi je me livre,
L’espoir va me suivre,
Et mon coeur s’enivre
De gloire et d’amour.
Adieu donc, doux rivage,
Témoin de mon bonheur!
Bientôt sous votre ombrage
Je reviendrai vainqueur.
Oui, ta voix m’inspire,
Et sous ton empire,
Un double délire
M’exalte en ce jour;
A toi je me livre,
L’espoir va me suivre,
Et mon coeur s’enivre
De gloire et d’amour.

ACTE DEUXIÈME

No. 6 Entr’acte, Récitatif et Air

Ont contre mon amour dans l’ombre conspiré;
Mais mois seul, Léonor! Seul je te défendrai.

[Cavatine]
Léonor! Viens, j’abandonne
Dieu, mon peuple avec mon trône;
Que ton coeur à moi se donne!
Rien par moi n’est regretté,
Si pour ciel et pour couronne
Il me reste ta beauté.
Léonor! Mon amour brave
L’univers et Dieu pour toi;
A tes pieds, je suis esclave,
Mais l’amant se relève roi!
Rien ne peut finir l’ivresse
De mes jours liés aux tiens;
Pour toujours, belle maîtresse,
Pour toujours tu m’appartiens.

[Récitatif]
(à don Gaspar, qui entre)
Pour la fête, préviens
Toute ma cour.

Don Gaspar s’incline et sort.

No. 7 Récitatif et Duo

Me croyez-vous heureuse? Justes cieux!

Ah! Tais-toi!

Léonor
Tu m’as trompée, Alphonse!

Cachant son deuil sous l’or et sous les fleurs;

Ah!
Laissez-moi fuir…

Quoi! Mon amour, stérile flamme,
Est sans puissance pour son âme!
Est-il pourtant destin plus beau?
Mais son bonheur semble un fardeau.

Léonor
(à part)
O mon amour! O chaste flamme!
Brûle dans l’ombre de mon âme,
Consume-toi comme un flambeau
Qui luit en vain dans un tombeau.

[Récitatif]
Le Roi
Bientôt j’aurai brisé cet hymen qui me lie.

Léonor
(avec épouvante)
Quoi!… La reine…

Le Roi
Pour toi mon coeur la répudie.

Léonor
Et l’Eglise!

Le Roi
Qu’importe? Avant peu je promets
De placer sur ton front ma couronne…

Léonor
Oh! Jamais!

[Duo]
Le Roi
Je l’ai juré par le sceptre et l’épée.
Quand brillera ma couronne à ton front,
Dans cette cour à te perdre occupée
Tes ennemis devant toi trembleront.

No. 9 Finale

Scène Cinquième
Les mêmes; Don Gaspar.

[Récitatif]
Don Gaspar
Ah! Sire!

Le Roi
Qu’est-ce donc?

Don Gaspar

Balthazar
Roi de Castille… Alphonse!
Du saint-siège et du ciel j’apporte les décrets;

Je sais ce qu’un chrétien doit au chef de l’Eglise;

Balthazar
Malheur!

[Ensemble avec Choeur]
Redoutez la fureur
D’un Dieu terrible et sage;
Il punit qui l’outrage,
Et pardonne au pécheur.
Vous bravez la tempête,
Imprudent! Et sans voir
Planer sur votre tête
L’ange du désespoir.

Léonor
Je frémis de terreur;
O comble d’outrage!
Je sens tout mon courage
Expirer dans mon coeur.
O terrible tempête
Qui ne laisse entrevoir
Que l’éclair sur ma tête
Dans un ciel sans espoir.

Le Roi
D’une sainte fureur
S’est voilé son visage
Et sa voix qui m’outrage
Me glace de terreur.
Je brave la tempête:
Toi, songe à ton devoir
Et surtout sur la tête
Respecte mon pouvoir

Le Choeur, Don Gaspart, Balthazar
Redoutez la fureur
D’un Dieu terrible et sage;
Il punit qui l’outrage,
Et pardonne au pécheur.

Balthazar
Vous tous qui m’écoutez, fuyez cette adultère;

No. 10 Prélude, Récitatif et Trio

Une salle de l’Alcazar.

Scène Première
Fernand, seul entrant.

[Récitatif]
Fernand
Me voici donc près d’elle!

(apercevant Fernand)
C’est toi, viens, mon libérateur!
Ton Roi te doit son salut.

Fernand
Et l’honneur
M’a bien payé.

Le Roi
De ta vaillance
Toi-même ici fixe la récompense;

Fernand
Sire! Au fond de mon âme,
Pauvre soldat, j’aime une noble dame;

Fernand me demandait à l’instant votre main…

Léonor
Que dites-vous?

Le Roi
Et moi… moi, votre souverain,
Je la lui donne…

Léonor et Fernand
O ciel!

A l’autel.

Fernand

No. 11 Récitatif et Air

[Récitatif]
Léonor
(seule, et tombant dans un fauteuil)
Qui, lui, Fernand, l’époux de Léonor!
L’ai-je bien entendu!
Tout me l’atteste, et mon coeur doute encore
De ce bonheur inattendu.
(se levant brusquement)
Moi, l’épouser! Oh! ce serait infâme!
Moi, lui porter en dot mon déshonneur!
Non, non; dût-il me fuir avec horreur,
Il connaîtra la malheureuse femme
Qu’il croit digne de son coeur.

[Air]
Pour être à toi mon coeur eût tout donné;
Fais-moi mourir, mon Dieu! Fais-moi mourir!
Venez, cruels! Qui vous arrête?
Mon châtiment descend du ciel.
Venez tous, c’est une fête!
De bouquets parez l’autel.
Qu’une tombe aussi s’apprête!
Et jetez un voile noir
Sur la triste fiancée
Qui, maudite et repoussée
Sera morte avant ce soir.

Scène Cinquième
Léonor et Inez.

No. 12 Récitatif et Choeur

[Récitatif]
Léonor
Inez, viens.

Inez
Qu’ai-je appris?… Fernand!

Don Gaspar
(à Inez)
Arrêtez!
Du Roi l’ordre suprême
Veut qu’à l’instant je m’assure de vous;
Madame, il faut nous suivre.

Inez

[Choeur]
Le Choeur
Déjà dans la chapelle
Dont la voûte étincelle,
La voix du prêtre appelle
Devant Dieu les époux.
Qu’autour d’eux l’on s’empresse,
Et que pour eux sans cesse
Brillent gloire et richesse
Et le jours les plus doux!

[Récitatif]
Fernand

Je me soutiens à peine! O justice des cieux!
Que me réservez-vous? Il reçut mon message,
Par Inez il sait tout… Je n’ai plus de courage.
(apercevant Fernand qui la contemple avec amour)
O ciel! C’est lui! Vers moi ses yeux
Se lèvent sans courroux.

Fernand
(s’approchant de Léonor)
L’autel est prêt, madame.

Léonor
O mon Dieu!

Fernand
Vous tremblez.

Léonor
Oui, de joie!

Don Gaspar
(aux seigneurs qui l’entourent)
Ah! L’infâme!

Fernand
(à Léonor)
Venez!

No. 13 Finale

Scène Neuvième
Don Gaspar, et un groupe de seigneurs.

Don Gaspar
Quel marché de bassesse!

Les Seigneurs
C’est trop fort! Par ma foi!

Don Gaspar
Épouser la maîtresse…

Les Seigneurs
La maîtresse du Roi!

Don Gaspar
Venir de sa province…

Les Seigneurs
Sans nom, sans biens acquis.

Don Gaspar
Le Roi l’a fait marquis…

Les Seigneurs
Messieurs, il sera prince!

Don Gaspar
D’Alcantara lui donner le collier
Et des trésors…

Les Seigneurs
Un rang, de la puissance…

Tous

Ah! Messeigneurs… Ah! Partagez ma joie!
Soyez témoins de mon bonheur.
Elle est à moi cette femme adorée!
Est-il un bien plus rare… oh! dites?

Don Gaspar et les Seigneurs
(froidement)
Oui, l’honneur.

Fernand
L’honneur! Sa noble loi me fut toujours sacrée,

O ciel!

Fernand
Qu’ai-je donc fait?

Balthazar
C’est toi qu’on déshonore!

Fernand
Comment ai-je souillé mon nom? Répondez-moi.

Tous
En épousant la maîtresse du Roi!

Fernand
(atterré)
La maîtresse du Roi!
(éclatant)
Quoi! Léonor!… L’enfer brûle ma tête!

Balthazar
Ignorais-tu?

Fernand
(avec une fureur croissante)
La maîtresse du Roi!
Tout leur sang et le mien!

Balthazar
(regardant au dehors)
Arrête!
Ils se rendent ici.

Fernand
C’est bien; je les attends.

Balthazar
Fuis!

Fernand
Oh! Non, je prétends
Me venger.

Balthazar
Que vas-tu faire?

Fernand
Dieu seul le sait, mon père.

Tous

Fernand
(allant au-devant du Roi)
Sire, je vous dois tout, ma fortune et ma vie;
Le titre de marquis… ma nouvelle splendeur…
Des dignités… de l’or… Tous les biens qu’on envie;

O ciel!… De son âme,
Dans sa loyauté,
S’indigne et s’enflamme
La noble fierté.
Ah! L’injuste outrage
Qui flétrit son Roi
Rougit mon visage
De honte et d’effroi!

Fernand
Péris, pacte infâme
Qui m’as trop coûté!
Honneur, noble flamme,
Rends-moi ma fierté!
J’affronte l’orage,
Je connais mes droits;
Qui brave l’outrage
Peut braver les rois.

Le Roi
Écoutez-moi, Fernand…

Fernand
J’ai tout appris, altesse…

Léonor
(à part)
Il ne savait donc pas…

Fernand
C’est pour une bassesse
Qu’on m’a choisi.

Le Roi
(avec colère)
Marquis!

Fernand
Ce nom n’est pas le mien;
Messieurs, rendez-moi votre estime…
Du sort, pauvre victime,
Je, pars, et n’emporte d’ici
Que le nom de mon père…

Léonor
(à part, avec égarement)
Inez, où donc est-elle?

Don Gaspar
(à voix basse, à Léonor)
Inez est prisonnière.

Léonor
(accablée)
Oh! Tout m’est éclairci.

Fernand
Vous jetiez avec de l’or.
Roi! Gardons, vous la puissance,
Moi l’honneur, mon seul trésor.

Léonor
(au Roi)
Grâce, ô Roi! Pour son offense;
Sur moi tombe ta vengeance!
(à Fernand qui la repousse)
Noble coeur! De ta souffrance
Sur moi pèse le remord;
Mais écoute ma défense,
Ou bien donne-moi la mort.

Le Roi
Ah! C’est trop de ma clémence
Protéger tant d’insolence!
Tremble, ingrat! Car ton offense
Fait sur toi planer la mort.
Mais, non… fuis… car ta vengeance
Est aussi dans mon remord.

Balthazar
Roi, déjà pour vous commence
Du pécheur la chute immense;

No. 14 Choeur, Récitatif et Romance

Scène Première
Religieux, Balthazar.

Balthazar
Les cieux s’emplissent d’étincelles;

Vous me l’aviez bien dit: «Mon fils, tu reviendras!»

Fernand
Vous me quittez?

Balthazar
Entrez dans la chapelle.
Près d’un novice arrivé cette nuit,
Malade… jeune encor… le devoir me conduit.

Fernand
(levant les yeux au ciel)
Jeune aussi!

Balthazar
Pauvre fleur par l’orage abattue.
Qui va mourir, peut-être!

Fernand

De Dieu l’amour avait faibli;
Pitié! je t’ai rendu mon âme,
Pitié! Seigneur, rends-moi l’oubli!

No. 15 Final

Scène Quatrième
Fernand, Balthazar, les religieux.

Balthazar
Es-tu prêt? viens.

Fernand
Mon père, à la chapelle
Je vous suis.

Balthazar

Fernand
(dans l’église)
Je me consacre à te servir, Seigneur!

Fernand
(sortant de l’église avec agitation)
Mes voeux sont prononcés… Et malgré moi descend,
Dans mon âme inquiète,
Une terreur secrète…
J’ai fui loin de l’autel.

Léonor
(essayant de se soulever)
Mon Dieu, je souffre… hélas!
J’ai froid.

Fernand
Qu’entends-je?
(regardant autour de lui)
Sur la terre
Un malheureux!
(s’approchant)
Relevez-vous, mon frère.

Léonor
C’est lui!

Fernand
(reculant avec horreur)
Grand Dieu!

Léonor
Ne me maudissez pas!

Fernand
Va-t’en d’ici! de cet asile
Tu troublerais la pureté;

On meurtri mes genoux.

Fernand

La terre, hélas! n’a plus de prix;
Mais que mon âme au ciel remonte
Pure au moins de ton mépris.

Fernand
Ses pleurs, sa voix jadis si chère,
Portent le trouble dans mes sens;
Sur ton élu, Seigneur, descends!
Arme son coeur par la prière.

Léonor
Entends ma voix jadis si chère,
Vois quel trouble agite mes sens;
Et dans la nuit où je descends
Ne repousse pas ma prière!

Fernand
Adieu! laissez-moi fuir.

Fernand
Ah! Léonor!

Léonor
Grâce!

Fernand
Relève-toi…
Dieu te pardonne.

Léonor
Et toi?

Fernand
Je t’aime!
Viens! je cède éperdu
Au transport qui m’enivre;
Mon amour t’est rendu,
Pour t’aimer je veux vivre.
Viens! j’écoute en mon coeur
Une voix qui me crie:
Dans une autre patrie
Va cacher ton bonheur.

Léonor
C’est mon rêve perdu
Qui rayonne et m’enivre!
Son amour m’est rendu,
Mon Dieu, laisse-moi vivre!
(à Fernand)
Abandonne ton coeur
A la voix qui te crie:
Dans une autre patrie
Va cacher ton bonheur.

Fernand

Fernand
A toi j’abandonne mon sort.

Léonor
Oh! le remords m’assiège,
Songe à tes voeux.

Fernand
Mon amour est plus fort.
Viens! pour te posséder je serai sacrilège.

Léonor
(défaillant)
Non, du ciel la faveur
Te retient sur l’abîme…
C’est la main du Sauveur
Qui t’épargne ton crime.
Moi, j’accepte mon sort…
Fernand, Dieu me protége…
Sois sauvé du sacrilège,
Sois sauvé par ma mort!

Fernand
Viens, fuyons!

Léonor
Je ne puis… ma vie est terminée.

Fernand
Mon Dieu!

Léonor
Mais je meurs pardonnée,
Fernand, je te bénis.
Adieu! dans le tombeau nous serons réunis.
(elle meurt)

Fernand
C’est ma voix qui t’appelle;

Fernand
Ah!

Balthazar
(aux religieux)
Le novice est mort,
Priez pour lui, mes frères.

Fernand
Et vous prierez demain pour moi.

Les Religieux
(tombant à genoux)
Dieu du pardon, que nos prières
Portent cette âme jusqu’à toi!

FIN

ACT I

The end of one of the lateral galleries surrounding the Monastery of Santiago de Compostela. At right, through the columns of the gallery, are seen trees and tombs of the cloister. At left is the entrance to the chapel, which contains the relics of Saint James. At the back, an exterior wall where there is a portal with a grill gate.

SCENE I
The monks pass through the gallery going to the chapel; Fernand, dressed in the robe of novice, and Balthazar, the superior, follow last.

No. 1 Chorus, Cavatina and Duet

[Chorus]
Chorus of Monks
Holy monastery,
Let our prayers
Rise to heaven
From your sanctuary!
Faithful pilgrim,
Guided by your zeal,
Come offer your vows
In this chapel.
Brothers, let us go to prayer; the bell summons us.

The monks enter the chapel: Balthazar is about to follow them, but sees Fernando standing motionless absorbed in thought. He approaches him.

SCENE II
Balthazar and Fernando.

[Recitative]
Balthazar
Will you not come pray with us?

Fernando
I cannot.

Balthazar
Could I have guessed the trouble of your heart?
God is no longer enough for you.

Fernando
You are right, Father;
When I go to commit myself irrevocably with vows,
In spite of myself I look with regret
On the things of this world, regret and love.

Balthazar
Speak, finish your thought…

Fernando At the altar that Saint James protects
And which a huge crowd of pilgrims besieges,
I prayed…I invoked the radiant angels.
When one of them suddenly came before my eyes.

[Cavatina]
An angel, an unknown woman,
On her knees, prayed near me,
And seeing her I felt
A shiver of pleasure and of dread.
Ah! Father! How beautiful she was!
And helpless against my heart,
It is God upon whom I call…and it is she,
It is she…whom I always see.
Afterwards, giving her holy water
My hand touched her hand;
Crossing over this enclosing wall,
My heart dreams of a different destiny.
In all my faithless oaths
And seeking help from heaven,
It is God to whom I pray, and it is she
Whom I always find in my heart.

[Recitative]
Balthazar
You, my son, my sole hope,
The support and honor of the faith…
You who should soon succeed
To my position after me!
You? You?

Fernando
(bowing his head)
Father…I love her.

Balthazar
(sadly)
Do you know that the scepter of kings
Is lowered before the tiara?
What my hand joins or divides?
That Spain trembles at my voice?

Fernando
Father, I love her.

Balthazar
And you belive
In the happiness that an earthly passion promises!
Tell me, do you know who this woman is
Who triumphs over your virtue?
She to whom you give your soul…
Her name, her rank…Do you know?

Fernando
(passionately)
No…but I love her.

[Duet]
Balthazar
Begone, reckless madman!
Go take yourself far from us,
And may God, more severe than I,
May God not curse you!

Fernando
Ah! Idol so sweet and so dear,
O you who see all my conflicts,
O you! My only friend on earth,
Watch over me, guide my steps.

Balthazar
(Stopping Fernando with his hand as he is about to leave and addressing him with emotion)
Treason, perfidy,
O my son, will wither your days;
Know the dangers that you face
On the reefs of life!
Perhaps, dashed by the storm,
You will wish in vain,
Shipwrecked and wretched, to regain the shore
And the port that once sheltered you.

Fernando
(falling to his knees)
Bless me, Father;
I depart.

[Duet]
Balthazar
Go, reckless fool!
You will soon return to us.
In his justice or his wrath,
May God not curse you!

Fernando
Idol so sweet and so dear,
O you who see all my conflicts,
Be my sole blessing on this earth!
I depart, I depart, guide my steps.

Fernando leaves through the gate at the back and, at a distance, stretches his arms toward Balthazar, who turns his head, wiping a tear, and enters the chapel.

SCENE III
A lovely scene on the shore of the Isle of León.
Young girls are gathered on the edge of the
sea filling baskets with flowers; slaves are hanging
rich fabrics on tree branches to provide more shade;
other girls join in dancing to the singing of their
companions. Inez and Girls.

[Aria et Chorus]
Inez and Girls
Golden sunlight, warm breeze,
Adorn this lovely place with flowers,
Happy shore that breathes
Peace, pleasure and love.

Inez
We who protect her tender youth,
Slaves, let us strive to repay the kindnesses
Our fair mistress bestows
With our discreet efforts.

Girls
Yes, let us strive to repay the kindnesses.

Inez
Silence! Silence!
The sea is beautiful and the air is sweet.
The boat approaches;
Look over there… do you see it?

The girls go to the shore and look off into the
distance.

No. 3 Aria and Chorus

Inez and Girls
Sweet breeze, be loyal to him,
Be gentle with his sail;
To guide his boat
To the shore whither love calls him,
And gather as you pass
The aromas that exude
Of Jasmine and orange
To perfume this beach.
Sweet breeze, be loyal to him,
Be gentle with his sail.

Scene IV
Enter Fernando, appearing on a boat, surrounded with young girls and wearing cloth over his eyes which they remove.

No. 4 Recitative and Duet

[Recitative]
Fernando
(to the girl helping him to disembark)
Kind messenger and nymph so modest,
Who protect my coming and going
In this place every day,
Why do you veil my eyes thus?
(the girls turn their heads away and show by gestures that they cannot answer)
Always the same silence!
(approaching Inez)
And why, I beg you,
Does your fair mistress
Persist in concealing from me
Her station, her name? What are they?

Inez
(smiling)
They cannot
Be made known.

Fernando
Can I not wrest from you
This secret? Is it terrible, then?

Inez
It is my mistress’s secret.
I see her coming; she will answer you.

Leonora enters and gestures to the girls to withdraw.

Scene V
Fernando and Leonora

[Duet]
Leonora
My dearest! God sends you.
Come, ah! Come let me see you!
Your presence is my joy
And rapture fills my heart.

Fernando
For you I broke the bonds of the holy altars.

Leonora
And since then my protective power
Watched over your fate, and led you secretly
To this sweet shore.

Fernando
To my great happiness!

Leonora
Perhaps to your detriment!

Fernando
Please, let me know
What danger can arise for us;
If I am master of your heart,
What misfortune is there to fear here?

Leonora
Ah, that I am not mistress of my fate!

Fernando
Who are you, then?

Leonora
Do not ask.

Fernando
I obey…but a word, one only!…If your feelings
Answer to mine, share my destiny
And deign to accept the hand of poor Fernando.

Leonora
I would like to…I cannot!

Fernando
What do I hear,
Ah! What is she saying?
O surprise! O terror!

Leonora
O strange destiny!
O future so severe!

Fernando
And what strange mystery
Chills my heart with terror?

Leonora
(aside)
It is God…God who avenges himself
And breaks my heart.
(to Fernando, showing him a parchment)
Thinking of you more than of myself,
Every day I have wanted to give you this paper…
Every day I hesitated…

Fernando
Why?

Leonora
Have you not said
That honor is the supreme value fo your heart?

Fernando
I have said so.

Leonora
For that I assured your future…
But it requires you…

Fernando
Oh? What then?

Leonora
To flee from me.

Fernando
Never!

Fernando
You, my only love,
Never see you again!
To love you is my life;
Without you, with no more hope,
My heart that breaks
Will be cold, O God,
Before it bids you that
That fatal farewell.
Alas, cursed on earth,
To endure my misery
Under those skies?
Where can I be happy?

Leonora
Farewell! Depart! Forget
Your dream and our pledges;
The love that unites us
Will be the ruin of us both.
My soul, which bleeds
From a thousand wounds,
Is rent and abjures
Lamenting and tears.
Farewell on earth!
And if my prayer
Reaches to the heavens,
You shall be happy!

Scene VI
Enter Inez.

[Recitative]
Inez
(rushing in trembling)
Ah, Madame!

Leonora
What is it then?

Inez
It is the king!

Leonora
O heaven!

Fernando
(surprised)
The king?

Leonora
(aside)
I shivered with fear
To the depths of my soul!
(to Inez)
I will follow you.
(to Fernando, giving him the parchment she showed him)
Take his, read,
And above all obey.
Flee from me.

[Duo]
Fernando
Never!
Alas, that I should forget you,
Nor see you ever again!
To love you is my life;
Without you, I have no more hope,

Leonora
My soul, bleeding
From a thousand pains,
Is rent and abjures
Lamenting and tears.
Farewell on earth!
And if my prayer
Reaches up to heaven,
You shall be happy!

Fernando
Alas, cursed on earth
To endure my misery
Under those skies?:
Where can I be happy?

Leonora
Farewell, depart, go, flee!
Fernando, farewell!
You must be happy!

Leonora throws Fernando a final adieu, then leaves
hurriedly.

No. 5 Recitative and Aria

SCENE VII
Fernando and Inez

[Recitative]
Fernando
(detaining Inez as she goes to follow Leonora)
The one who comes seeking her…

Inez
Oh! Hush!
It is the king!

Fernando
In know all: his rank, his birth,
His ascent to the throne…and I!
I, poor unfortunate, obscure and without glory…

Inez
Be prudent!
(she makes a sign to him to be silent and runs off)

SCENE VIII
Fernando alone.

Fernando
I did not deserve her love and her heart.
(he looks at the parchment Leonora gave him and lets out a cry of joy)
Oh heaven! She wishes me to be worthy of her!
Yes, this title, this rank and this signal honor!…
I…Fernando! Captain! And because of her, O happiness!

[Aria Cabaletta]
Yes, your voice inspires me
And under your command
a double ecstasy
Exalts me today;
I surrender myself to you
Hope will follow me,
And my heart is intoxicated
With glory and love.
So farewell, sweet shore,
Witness to my happiness!
Soon I shall return
Victorious to your shade.
Yes, your voice inspires me,
And under your command,
a double ecstasy
Exalts me today;
I deliver myself to you
Hope will follow me,
And my heart is intoxicated
With glory and love.

ACT II

No. 6 Entr’acte, Recitative, and Aria

An open gallery, through which are seen the Alcazar and its gardens.

SCENE I
The king and Don Gasparo.

[Recitative]
The King
Alcazar gardens, delight of the Moorish kings,
How I love to stroll under your ancient sycamores
And muse on the amorous dreams that intoxicate my heart!

Don Gasparo
The palace of the vanquisned belongs to the victor.
Through you Christ triumphs, Ishmael flees in terror.

The King
Yes the kings of Morocco and Grenada together
Have seen the crescent fall near Tarifa.

Don Gasparo
Yours is the glory, Sire!

The King
Yes, thanks to the powerful arm
Of Fernando, the hero whom a single day made famous,
Who rallied the army and saved his master…
I await him at Seville, and I wish to honor
His courage at my court before the eyes of all.

Don Gasparo
An important message from the Holy Father is announced.

The King
(aside, with impatience)
The weight of his holy scepter becomes too heavy.

Don Gasparo, whom the King signals to withdraw, bows respectufully and leaves.

SCENE II
The King alone.

The King
(watching Don Gasparo going away)
Yes, all these courtiers devoured by envy,
In hostile league with Rome,
Have conspired in shadow against my love;
But I alone, Leonora! I alone defend you.

[Cavatina]
Leonora! Come, I forsake
God, my people and my throne;
Let me have your heart!
I regret nothing,
If for heaven and the crown
Your beauty remains to me.
Leonora! My love defies
The universe and God for you;
At your feet I am a slave,
But the lover rises a king!
Nothing can end the rapture
Of my life bound to yours;
Forever, fair mistress,
You belong to me forever.

[Recitative}
(to Don Gasparo, who enters)
Inform all my court
Of the celebration.

Don Gasparo bows and leaves.

No. 7 Recitative and Duet

SCENE III
Enter Leonora with Inez conversing quietly.

Leonora
So that is what they say…

Inez
That he is victorious and glorious.

Leonora
(with joy)
Fernando! Glory to him!
(noticing the king)
O heaven!
(aside)
I am shamed.

The king signals Inez to withdraw, then approaches Leonora.

The King
Leonora! Why do you lower your eyes sadly?

Leonora
Do you think me happy? Good heavens!
When I quit my father’s castle,
A poor abused girl, Alas, I expected
To follow a husband in this world!…

The King
(tenderly)
Ah, hush!

Leonora
You deceived me, Alfonso! In this lonely forest
Whose shadow ill conceales the king’s mistress,
The contempt of your court still reaches me.

The King
Oh, hush, hush!

[Duet]
In this palace all pleasures reign
To charm you; you walk on flowers;
When you see everything around you smiling,
Whence, my angel of love, does this sadness come?

Leonora
In your palace, my poor soul sighs,
Hiding its grief under the gold and the flowers;
God alone sees how beneath my sad smile
A multitude of tears devour my withered heart.

The King
But whence comes this dark melancholy?

Leonora
You ask me that…me!
Ah! For love and pity’s sake,
Let me flee far from your court…

The King
No, trust in your king
To succeed, I must still remain silent,
But before long you shall know, Leonora,
What my heart intends for you.

Leonora
The prince can do nothing for me.

The King
What! My love, a sterile flame,
Is powerless for its soul!
Is it nonetheless a fairer fate?
But its happiness seems a burden.

Leonora
(aside)
Oh my love! O chaste flame!
Burn in the shadow of my soul,
Consume yourself like a torch
That vainly lights a tomb.

[Recitative]
The King
Soon I shall dissolve this marriage that binds me.

Leonora
(frightened)
What!…The queen…

The King
For you my heart repudiates her.

Leonora
And the Church!

The King
What matter? Before long I promise
To place my crown upon your head…

Leonora
Oh! Never!

[Duet]
The King
I have sworn it by the scepter and the sword.
When my crown shines upon your head,
In this court, bent on your defeat,
Your enemies will tremble before you.

Leonora
Tremble you also, for the scepter and the sword
Will perish under anathema in your hands.
Yes, I! To reign! The usurped crown,
A ring of fire, will burn my brow.

[Recitative]
The King
Let your grief cease!
Come with your king
To take part in the celebration
That he has ordered for you.

No. 8 Ballet Music

SCENE IV
The king, Leonora, lords and ladies of the court, pages, and guards. The lords and ladies approach the king and bow. The king leads Leonora by the hand to the places where they sit to preside over the festivities. The lords deploy themselves. The young Spanish girls and the moorish slaves appear and begin the dances. At the moment when the party is most lively, Don Gasparo enters in agitation.

No. 9 Finale

SCENE V
Enter Don Gasparo.

[Recitative]
Don Gasparo
Ah, Sire!

The King
What is it?

Don Gasparo
(speaking softly)
You refused to believe
The warnings of a loyal subject…
She upon whom you lavish fortune and glory
Has been secretly betraying her sovereign.

The King
You lie!

Don Gasparo
This note that a slave conveyed for her
To her faithful confidante,
This young Inez…
(He hands the King a letter)
Sire, am I right?

The King
(waving away the courtiers)
Ah! It is not possible!
(to Leonora, showing her the letter)
Another dares write to you…

Leonora
(recognizing the handwriting, aside)
O heaven! Fernando! I can hardly breathe…

The King
Answer.

Leonora
Punish me: I love him!

The King
O treason!
His name?

Leonora
I may die, but I cannot tell you.

The King
Perhaps torture will wring it from you.

Leonora
Ah, Sire!

SCENE VI
Enger Balthazar followed by a monk carrying a parchment with the papal seal attached. At Balthazar’s appearance great agitation is evident among those present.

The King
What is this noise…who is so bold?

Balthazar
I, who come to inform you of the anger of heaven.

The King
Monk, what are you saying?

Balthazar
King of Castille…Alfonso!
I bring decrees from the Holy See and from heaven;
Resist them no longer or my lips shall pronounce
The avenging anathema, which punishes transgressions.

The King
I know what duty a Christian owes the head of the Church;
Priest, do not forget the duty owed to one’s king.

Balthazar
You wish for the object for whom love has enthralled you.
To repudiate the queen and break your oath.

The King
I wished it.

All
O heaven!

The King
That was my desire.
(indicating Leonora)
The crown would have been placed on her head…
Whatever my will may have been, I am lord and master,
And I have no judge but myself.

Balthazar
Woe!

[Ensemble with Chorus]
Fear the wrath
Of a wise and terrible God;
He punishes those who transgress,
And pardons the sinner.
You brave the tempest,
Reckless man, without seeing
The angel of despair
Hovering above your head.

Leonora
I tremble with terror;
O complete outrage!
I feel all my courage
Drain from my heart.
O terrible tempest
Where nothing is visible
But the lightning upon my head
From a sky without hope.

The King
His face is masked
With holy fury,
And his voice that insults me
Freezes me with fear.
I defy the tempest:
You, think of your duty
And above all respect
My power over your head.

Chorus, Don Gasparo, and Balthazar
Fear the fury
Of a wise and terrible God:
He punishes those who offend,
And forgives the sinner.

Balthazar
All of you who hear me, flee this adultery;
Flee, for this woman is cursed by God!

Leonora
Just heaven!

The King
Leonora!

Balthazar
Flee!

Leonora
Ah! I am dying!

All
Let us leave this place.

The King
(furious)
Ah, by what right?

Balthazar
In the name of heaven and the Holy Father!
Anathema upon them if, defying our decrees,
Tomorrow they are not separated forever!

The King
Ah! What has he said? Our power here is threatened
By his insensate hatred!
And vegeance would slumber in my wounded soul
When I command as a king!
Ah, that my scepter in this icy hand
Would rather break and perish with me!

Leonora
Ah, what has he said? What a horrible thought!
Like one infamous, banished, and persecuted!
Heaven commands, and my insensate soul
Calls in vain for vengeance from the king.
Ah, to hide my cold corpse
Is my sole wish. Ungrateful earth, open!

Inez
Ah, what has he said? What a horrible thought!
Like one infamous, banished, and persecuted!
The man of God on his bowed head…
The voice of the priest cursing
Calls down the law on my frozen soul.

Don Gasparo and the Chorus
Yes, the Lord’s mercy is exhausted!
Let this woman be driven out at once!
The man of God calls down the law
Of a vengeful God on his bowed head.

Balthazar
You defy the tempest,
Reckless man! Without seeing
The angel of despair
Hovering above your head.
Fear the fury!
Heaven wills it! Its mercy is exhausted!
Let this woman be driven at once!
(taking the parchment from the monk and unrolling it before those present)
Behold the bull of the Holy Father!
(all fall to their knees)
Yes, the Lord’s mercy is exhausted!
Let this woman be driven out at once!
Heaven commands, and this deranged soul
Calls out in vain for the King’s vengeance!
All of you, flee, for the lightning is unleashed,
And curse this palace with me.
Obedience!

The King
Ah! Be afraid! Ah! What has he said?
Would the revenge in my wounded woul
Sleep when as king it is I who command?
Ah! what has he said? What a horrible thought!
Our power here is threatened!
Ah! May my scepter in this frozen hand
Sooner break and perish with me!

Léonor
Like a pariah both banished and expelled!
Ah! what has he said? What a horrible thought!
Heaven commands, and my deranged soul
Implore in vain the king’s vengeance.
Open up, earth, at my prayer
To hide my cold corpse!
Callous earth, open!

Inez
The king is powerless before heaven
To defend his offended mistress!
My soul is frozen.
The voice of the priest cursing
Calls down terror on my frozen soul.

Don Gasparo and all the Court
Flee, let us flee, for the lightning is unleashed
And this palace will fall in ruins upon the king.
Flee, let us flee, for the lightning is unleashed
The man of God calls down the law
Of a vengeful God on his bowed head.

Exit Leonora in despair, hiding her head in her hands.

ACT III

No. 10 Prelude, Recitative, and Trio

A hall in the Alcazar.

SCENE I
Enter Fernando alone.

[Recitative]
Fernando
Here I am near to her!
I left her a nobody and return a conqueror.
When the king calls me to his court,
I feel my heart beat more from love than pride.
She whom I love must be in this palace;
I shall see her at last and learn who she is.
(seeing the king he withdraws discreetly)
It is the king!

SCENE II
Enter The King, deep in thought, not seeing Fernando; Don Gasparo following the king.

Don Gasparo
Have you decided her fate?

The King
(without listening, to himself)
I thus yielded to the threats of a monk!

Don Gasparo
Will the king do justice?

The King
See that Leonora comes, and Inez,
Her accomplice.

Don Gasparo bows and leaves.

The King
(seeing Fernando)
It is you, come, my liberator!
Your king owes his health to you.

Fernando
And honor
Has paid me well.

The King
Name here the reward
Of your valor yourself.
My royal word today assures it.

Fernando
Sire! From the bottom of my soul,
Poor soldier, I love a noble lady;
I owe all my success, my glory, to her love…
Grant me her hand.

The King
I desire it. Who is she?

Fernando
(seeing Leonora entering)
Ah! I would have named her calling her the most beautiful!

The King
(stupefied)
Leonora!

SCENE III
Enter Leonora.

Leonora
(struck with surprise at seeing Fernando; aside)
Fernando!! Great God!
To appear contemptible before him!

[Trio]
The King
(coldly)
Fernando, has just informed me here
Of your love, Madame.

Leonora
(aside)
What a dark fire is in his looks!

The King
For you, who are silent…with a guilty silence
Another king might have taken revenge…
(he stops and continues more coldly)
Fernando was just asking me for your hand…

Leonora
What do you say?

The King
And I…I, your sovereign,
I give it him…

Leonora and Fernando
O heaven!

The King
You depart tomorrow.
(addressing Leonora with bitter sadness)
Do not be ungrateful for such love,
When he will have none but you for his only happiness,
When he imagines being loved forever,
Never drive him from your heart.

Leonora and Fernando
Is it an error, is it a dream that conjures
The illusion that caresses my heart?

The King
Let an oath unite you at the altar
In an hour.

Fernando
O my Prince, let me bless you
On my knees…All my blood is yours!

The King
(in a low voice, to Leonora)
And your vows to him, you will keep without effort.
You wished to deceive me like a courtesan, and I…
I, Leonora, avenge myself like aking.

Exit the King, taking Fernando with him.

SCENE IV
Leonora alone.

No. 11 Recitative and Aria

[Recitative]
Leonora
(collapsing into an armchair)
Who, he, Fernando, the wife of Leonora?
Did I hear right!
Everything confirms it, but my heart still doubts
This unexpected good fortune.
(rising brusquely)
I, marry him! Oh, that would be vile!
I, bring him my dishonor as a dowry!
No, no; he must flee me in horror,
He will recognize the unfortunate woman
Who thinks herself worthy of his heart.

[Aria]
O my Fernando, all the worldly goods
My heart would have given to be yours;
But my love, purer than prayer,
Is condemned, alas, to despair.
You will know all, and despised by you
I will have suffered all that one can suffer.
If your justice is then satisfied,
God, let me die! Let me die!
Come, cruel ones! What deters you?
My punishment descends from heaven.
Come all, it is a feast!
Adorn the altar with bouquets.
Let a tomb be readied as well!
And throw a black veil
Over the mournful bride
Who will die before this evening
Cursed and rejected.

SCENE V
Enter Inez.

No. 12 Recitative and Chorus

[Recitative]
Leonora
Inez, come.

Inez
What did I hear?… Fernando! He is marrying you?

Leonora
He, marry me!…Jealous fortune
Has not that much happiness in store for me.
Let him know all before plighting his troth to me.
Go…tell him that I was the king’s mistress…
After such a confession, if he departs, if he forsakes me,
I shall not complain…but if like a god,
My repentance wins his forgiveness,
Then serving him on my knees, loving and blessing him
Will be too little. For him I am prepared to die.
Tell him that…so that at least he knows everything
From me.
(Exit)

Inez
Yes, Madame, depend upon
My zeal…I hasten without delay…

SCENE VI
Enter Don Gasparo from the right with the Camerera-mayor.

Don Gasparo
(to Inez)
Halt!
The supreme command of the king
Wills that I detain you at once;
Madame, you must follow us.

Inez
(troubled)
O heaven, protect us.

Don Gasparo delivers Inez to the Camerera-mayor, who leads her away.

SCENE VII
Enter all the courtiers, then the King and Fernando.

[Chorus]
Chorus
Already in the chapel,
The ceiling brightly lighted,
The voice of the priest calls
The affianced couple before God.
Let us gather around them
And let glory and riches
And the sweetest of days
Forever shine for them!

[Recitative]
Fernando
(entering with the king)
Ah! My heart is ecstatic with so much happiness.
A dream come true, an unexpected miracle!
I can walk among these noble lords as an equal!

The King
(to Fernando)
So that it be known to the court how much I honor you,
You who have saved me, you the conqueror of the Moor,
Count of Zamora…Marqués of Monte Real!

Fernando shows surprise.

For you this title.
(removing a neck band he is wearing)
Also for you this order.

Fernando kneels on one knee, and the king places the band of the order around his neck.

Don Gasparo
(in a low voice, to the lords around him)
What do you say, my lords?

A Lord
(likewise)
Kings are generous.

Don Gasparo
(likewise)
It is compensating shame and infamy!with honors!

A Lord
(likewise)
This wedding is true, then?

Don Gasparo
(likewise)
The prince is marrying them;
They are all in agreement, and this place of shame
Is meant to arrest the thunderbolts of the Church.

Chorus of Nobles
But soft, it is Leonora…

Don Gasparo
(with irony)
The new marquesa.

At the sight of Leonora the King exits grieving.

SCENE VIII
Enter Leonora, pale, dressed in white, and accompanied by several ladies-in-waiting.

Leonora
(aside)
I can hardly stand! O heavenly justice!
What do you hold for me? He has received my message;
He knows all from Inez…I have no more courage.
(seeing Fernando, who regards her lovingly)
O heaven! It is he! His eyes are lifted
To me without rancor.

Fernando
(approaching Leonora)
The altar is prepared, Madame.

Leonora
O my God!

Fernando
You are trembling.

Leonora
Yes, with joy!

Don Gasparo
(to the Lords around him)
Ah! The vile creature!

Fernando
(to Leonora)
Come! Lean
On the arm of a husband.

Exit Fernando leading Leonora by the hand. The Ladies and some of the Lords follow them.

No. 13 Finale

SCENE IX
Don Gasparo and a group of Courtiers.

Don Gasparo
What an odious bargain!

The Nobles
It is too much! By my faith!

Don Gasparo
To wed the mistress…

The Nobles
The mistress of the King!

Don Gasparo
To come from his province…

The Nobles
Without a name, without property.

Don Gasparo
The king has made him a marqués…

The Nobles
Sirs, he will be a prince!

Don Gasparo
To give him the collar of Alcantara
And treasures…

The Nobles
A rank, power…

All
The adventurer had to be well paid
For is virtue and his complaisance.

The lords who left with the entourage reappear, the others go to meet with them and appear to be asking about the details of the ceremony. The wedding is finished. All the nobles display their indignation.

All
Ah! At least let our contempt, which he defies,
Become a hobble to his pride,
Let none of us seek his favor,
Let him remain alone with his dishonor!

SCENE X
Enter Fernando.

Fernando
(in ecstasy)
Heaven dispenses its favor upon me.
Ah, my lords…Ah, share my joy!
Be witness to my good fortune.
She is mine, this beloved woman!
Is there a blessing more rare…oh, say?

Don Gasparo and the Nobles
(coldly)
Yes, honor.

Fernando
Honor! Its noble law has always been sacred to me;
I received it as a dowry in my cradle…
Not one of these endowments, my guerdon today,
Is worth that heritage.

The Nobles
However, there is one that seem fairer to you.

Fernando
What did you say? I would hear
A reason for this insult!…But no, I misunderstood.
Ah! I beg you,
Prove it to me…Your hand, my friends!

All
(withdrawing their hands)
This title…understand that in future…marqués,
We do not recognize it or you from now on.

Fernando
Ha! You will pay
For this insult.
It demands blood.

All
Well, then, you shall have it!

Fernando
Let us go!

SCENE XI
Enter Balthazar.

Balthazar
Whither do you run? Halt the acts
Of this blind madness, Christians, and tremble all!
I call down the wrath of heaven upon this marriage.

Fernando
(lunging at Balthazar)
God…Balthazar!

Balthazar
(clasping him in his arms)
Fernando!

Don Gasparo
(with irony)
The husband of Leonora!

Balthazar
(releasing his arms and pushing him away)
O heaven!

Fernando
What have I done?

Balthazar
It is you who are dishonored!

Fernando
How have I sullied my name? Answer me.

All
By marrying the king’s mistress!

Fernando
(thunderstruck)
The king’s mistress!
(exclaiming)
What! Leonora!…Hell burns in my head!

Balthazar
Did you not know?

Fernando
(with growing fury)
The king’s mistress!
All their blood and mine!

Balthazar
(looking outside)
Stop!
They are coming back.

Fernando
Fine; I await them.

Balthazar
Flee!

Fernando
Oh, no, I must
Have vengeance.

Balthazar
What will you do?

Fernando
Only God knows, Father.

All
What threatening looks!

SCENE XII
Enter The King, giving his hand to Leonora.

Fernando
(confronting the king)
Sire, I owe you everything, my fortune and my life;
The title of marqués…my newfound splendor…
The orders…the gold…Everything one could want;
But you are too dearly paid, your Majesty,
At the price of my honor.

The King
O heaven!…In his loyalty
The noble pride
Of his soul
Is offended and inflamed.
Ah! The unjust offense
That debases his king
Reddens my face
With shame and terror!

Fernando
Perish, horrid contract
That has cost me too much!
Honor, noble flame,
Restore my pride to me!
I face the storm,
I know my rights;
One who defies outrage
Can defy kings.

The King
Listen to me, Fernando…

Fernando
I have learned everything, highness…

Leonora
(aside)’
Then he did not know…

Fernando
It was for such ignominy
That I was chosen.

The King
(angrily)
Marqués!

Fernando
This name is not mine;
And of the king’s gifts, I will keep nothing.
(turning to the lords who insulted him)
Sirs, render me your esteem…
A poor victim of fate,
I am leaving, and taking nothing from here
Bot the name of my father…

Leonora
(aside, in confusion)
Inez, where is she then?

Don Gasparo
(softly to Leonora)
Inez is a prisoner.

Leonora
(devastated)
Oh, now all is clear to me.

Fernando
(removing the neck band the king gave him)
This collar paid with infamy
I return to you.
(drawing his sword)
This polluted sword,
That was of late the terror of our enemies,
I break…at your feet! For you are the King.
I curse this marriage,
I curse the ignoble offense
For which, in recompense,
You showered me with gold.
King! Let us keep—you your power,
I my honor, my only treasure.

Leonora
(to the King)
Grace, o King1 For his offense;
Let your vengeance fall on me1
(to Fernando, who rebuffs her)
Noble heart! Let the remorse
For you suffering weigh on me;
But hear my defense,
Or simply give me death.

The King
Ah! It is beyond my clemency
To endure such insolence1
Tremble, ingrate! For your offense
Brings death hovering over you.
But, no…flee…for your revenge
Is also in my remorse.

Balthazar
King, already the precipitous fall
Of the sinner begins for you;
On the throne is suffering;
Under the purple is remorse.
(to Fernando)
Come, my son, only God,
In his mercy can open a gate to you.

Don Gasparo and the Chorus
Remorse for our insolence
Already weighs upon us.
How noble is his revenge!
But I tremble for his fate.

Exit Fernando, followed by Balthazar; the Nobles separate respectfully to make way for them to pass and bow before
him.

ACT IV

The cloister of the monastery of Santiago de Campostela. On the right, the portico of the church; opposite, a large cross raised on a stone plinth. Here and there tomgs and wooden crosses. The dawning day illumines only the open part of the cloister; the ground levels are still darkened by the shadows cast by the church walls.

No. 14 Chorus, Recitative, and Romanza

SCENE I
Monks and Balthazar. Some monks are prostrate at the foot of the cross; others, farther away, hollow their tombs and recite at intervals:

The Monks
Brothers, let us dig the haven where pain sleeps.

A monk ushers in pilgrims who go toward the church and stop before the portico where Balthazar appears.

Balthazar
The heavens are filled with lights;
Ascend toward God with rapture,
Pure choir of faithful penitents,
Seated in the shadow of death.

The monks repeat Balthazar’s prayer, then depart through the arcades of the cloister; the pilgrims enter the chapel. One monk remains standing, motionless, his face hidden in his hands. It is Fernando.

SCENE II
Balthazar and Fernando.

Balthazar
(approaching Fernando)
In a moment, my brother,
An eternal oath
Will pluck you from the world
To bind you to heaven.

Fernando
When I forsook the port for the storm of the world,
You told me truly: “My son, you will return!”
Here I am; I have returned, seeking profound peace
And oblivion that death here offers in its arms.

Balthazar
Courage, Fernando! When God calls you,
Do not think but of Him; your vow uttered
Between the world and you is a settled tomb.
(Balthazar begins to go)

Fernando
Are you leaving me?

Balthazar
Enter the chapel.
Duty takes me to a novice
Arrived this night, ill…still young.

Fernando
(raising his eyes to heaven)
Also young!

Balthazar
A poor flower battered by the storm.
Who will die, perhaps!

Fernando
Oh! Yes, grief kills.

Balthazar goes to take Fernando’s hands, as if to lift his spirits, but he leaves.

SCENE III
Fernando alone.

Fernando
The king’s mistress!…My glory is sunken
In the abyss dug under a hellish trap,
And hope has vanished from my grieving heart
As from a shattered vase.

Angel so pure, whom I thought I had found
In a dream, you whom I loved!
Along with hope, bitter deception,
Fly away, and forever!
In me, for love of a woman,
Love of God was weakened.
Have mercy! I have rendered you my soul,
Mercy, Lord, grant me forgetfulness!
Angel so pure, whom I thought I had found
In a dream, you whom I loved!
Along with hope, bitter deception,
Fly away, and forever!

No. 15 Finale

SCENE IV
Enter Balthazar with monks.

Balthazar
Are you ready? Come.

Fernando
Father, I follow you
To the chapel.

Balthazar
Come, my son, that God may be revealed to you!

Balthazar and Fernando enter the chapel; the monks follow in silence. Leonora appears in the habit of a novice; she stands before the church porch, seeking to distinguish the features of the passing monks, their heads lowered under their hoods.

SCENE V
Leonora alone.

Leonora
Fernando! Fernando! Will I be able to find him?
Is this monastery the refuge where he bides?
Under this holy robe, my Lord, whom I displease,
Allow me just to reach him.
My strength is exhausted with pain;
I am dying…yes! thanks for this gift!
Take my broken soul,
But let me at least go with Fernando’s forgiveness.

The Monks
(in the church)
My the blessing of the Almighty be with you,
Vow of the faithful, worshipful tribute!
Do you hear from the mountaintops
The voice of the angel proclaiming salvation?

Leonora
What do I hear? It is the vow rising from the altar,
A soul that heaven lifts from this earth.

The Monks
Do you hear from the mountaintops
The voice of the angel proclaiming salvation?

Fernando
(in the church)
I devote myself to your service, Lord!
Come, let your grace illumine my heart.

Leonora
That voice! Surely it is he! Lost to the world.
Angel, return to heaven! I flee this austere cloister,
But…I cannot, death chills my blood.
(she falls exhausted at the foot of the cross)

SCENE VI
Leonora and Fernando.

Fernando
(emerging from the church in an agitated state)
My vows have been spoken…Yet in spite of myself
A secret terror creeps into
My troubled soul…
I have wandered far from the altar.

Leonora
(trying to rise)
My God, I am in pain…Alas!
I am cold!

Fernando
What do I hear?
(looking about)
An unfortunate
On the ground!
(approaching)
Rise, my brother.

Leonora
It is he!

Fernando
(recoiling in horror)
Great God!

Leonora
Do not curse me!

Fernando
Begone from here! You sully
The purity of this sanctuary;
Let Death, cold and still,
Be free to do its work.
The King calls you to his palace
To adorn you with shame and gold.
His love will make you more fair,
More fair and still more odious.

Leonora
Praying, I have walked
To this monastery…Brambles and stones
Have bruised my knees.

Fernando
You deceived me; what do you expect from me?

Leonora
Pain has fallen, alas, on both of us because of an error.
I thought that Inez had explained to you
Everything for me; I had faith in your pardon.
Believe me! At the edge of the grave, one does not lie.
My sad confession could not reach you…
Fernando…be merciful to me in my last sigh.
Fernando, imitate the clemency
Of heaven, to which you are bound.
You see my tears and my suffering,
Listen to your compassion.
For me who drag my shame hither,
The earth, alas, has no more value;
But let my soul rise to heaven
At least cleansed of your contempt.

Fernando
Her tears, her voice once so dear,
Trouble my senses;
Descend, Lord, upon your chosen one!
Arm his heart by prayer.

Leonora
Hear to my voice, once so dear,
See what turmoil roils my senses;
And in the night into which I descend
Do not reject my prayer!

Fernando
Farewell! Let me flee.

Leonora
Quell your anger,
Oh, do not let me die forsaken.
See my tears, my misery…
A single word of forgiveness!
By heaven, by your mother,
By the death that awaits me!

Fernando
Begone, begone!

Leonora
Pity! I implore you
For the sake of the love that was ours!

Fernando
When she pleads, from pity
All my love is awakened at her voice.

Leonora
Mercy at this last hour,
Or crush me under your feet!
(she falls on her knees)

Fernando
Ah, Leonora!

Leonora
Forgive me!

Fernando
Rise…
God pardons you.

Leonora
And you?

Fernando
I love you!
Come! I yield utterly
To the bliss that enraptures me;
I give my love to you,
I wish to live to love you.
Come! I hear in my heart
A voice that calls to me:
Go hide your happiness
In another land.

Leonora
It is my lost dream
That gleams and enraptures me!
He gives his love to me
My God, let me live!
(to Fernando)
Abandon your heart
To the voice that calls to you:
Go hide your happiness
In another land.

Fernando
Let us flee this monastery.

Leonora
(in terror)
O heaven! And your salvation!

The choir of monks is heard in the church.

The Monks
(in the church)
Rise up to God, freed from the earth,
Vow of the faithful, worshipful tribute.

Leonora
Do you hear their prayer?
It is God who enlightens you.

Fernando
I abandon my fate to you.

Leonora
Oh, I am beset by remorse,
Think of your vows.

Fernando
My love is stronger.
Come! I will commit sacrilege to possess you.

Leonora
(losing heart)
No, the favor of heaven
Halts you at the edge of the abyss…
It is the hand of the Savior
That saves you from your crime.
I accept my lot…
Fernando, God protects me…
Be saved from sacrilege,
Be saved by my death!

Fernando
Come, let us flee!

Leonora
I cannot…my life is ended.

Fernando
Great God!

Leonora
But I die forgiven,
Fernando, I bless you.
Farewell! We shall be reunited in the tomb.
(she dies)

Fernando
Help! Help!
(leaning over Leonora’s lifeless body)
It is my void that calls you:
Open your eyes, it is I…your husband! Vain effort!
Help! Help!

SCENE VII and the Last
Leonora lying on the ground. Enter Balthazar, coming out of the church followed by the monks.

Fernando
(to Balthazar)
Come, come…it is she!

Balthazar
Silence!
(he approches Leonora and lowers the hood from her unbound hair)
She is no more!

Fernando
Ah!

Balthazar
(to the monks)
The novice is dead,
Pray for him, my brothers.

Fernando
And tomorrow you will pray for me.

The Monks
(kneeling)
God of forgiveness, may our prayers
Carry this soul unto you!
